Sometimes it feels like certain parts of faith are restricted to super-spiritual people. TEACHING OUTLINE A LL ACCESS WEEK 1 BOTTOM LINE JESUS GIVES YOU ALL-ACCESS TO GOD. S C R I P T U R E And so, dear brothers and sisters, we can boldly enter heaven s Most Holy Place because of the blood of Jesus. By his death, Jesus opened a new and life-giving way through the curtain into the Most Holy Place (Hebrews 10:19-20 NLT). Prior to Jesus death and resurrection, the Most Holy Pace located inside the temple was as close to God as anyone could get. But the writer of Hebrews tells us that because of Jesus, THEY can boldly go right in. In other words, there is no more separation between them and God. GOAL OF SMALL GROUP To help students understand that because of Jesus, they CAN be close to God. TEACHING SCRIPT SUMMARY INTRODUCTION Going to a concert is great, but there is just something about being near the band or near the artist that makes it even better. TENSION When it comes to approaching Him, it can feel like some people have better seats than others. For most of us, our distance from God has less to do with what we think He s like, and more to do with our behavior. In a word, sin. We settle for the cheap-seats experience of God. We settle for showing up, but never getting too close. TRUTH The Jewish people saw God through a system. Some people had more access than others, but everyone had a limit. The writer is telling these Jewish Christians that because of Jesus, THEY can boldly go right in. God was not okay with being separated from you. That s why He sent Jesus to be our all-access pass to Him. APPLICATION First, think about this question: What access do you currently think you have with God? Consider trading your access for His. LANDING I want you to ask yourself this question: How close am I to God right now?

TEACHING SCRIPT A LL ACCESS WEEK 1 BOTTOM LINE JESUS GIVES YOU ALL-ACCESS TO GOD. INTRODUCTION 2 Minutes (Communicator Note: Begin with a story of a time when you had or wanted an all-access pass.) Is there anything better than a concert? It doesn t matter if you love pop, rap, or local indie bands, seeing your favorite artist is one of the best things in life. A few years ago, I got the concert experience of a lifetime, thanks to a good friend. My friend Ben called me and said, Dude, I have some good news for you. I have an extra concert ticket Thursday night, and you can have it if you want. For FREE. And it just so happened to be my favorite artist. So I definitely said YES to the offer. I was pumped! Isn t that what we all try to do at a concert: get as close as possible? Going to a concert is great, but there is just something about being near the band or near the artist that makes it even better. Even though I had some of the best seats in the house that night, there was something else that had my attention. Just to the right of the stage, there was a door. I knew where that door went, because there was an intimidating security guard there. It was the backstage area, and I couldn t help but wonder what it was like to be back there. The only thing I didn t know? Where we were sitting. When we walked in, my heart started racing because we kept walking closer and closer to the stage. We finally ended up in row six, center stage. I was totally going to get sweated on by the band! It was incredible. Now, here s why that night was so awesome. Every other concert I had been to in my whole life, I sat way in the back of the venue. I was the guy who tried to sneak closer and swipe an empty seat because I couldn t afford to buy it. But that night, I didn t have to. I spent about half the concert imagining how I could sneak back there and hang out in the green room with the band and eat their M&Ms. Because no matter how good your tickets are, you can only get so close. There s a velvet rope you can t cross. A hall you can t walk down. A security guard you can t walk past. Why? Because those areas are reserved for certain people. Special people who have an all-access pass.

TEACHING SCRIPT 2 TENSION 3 Minutes At some point, you and I have felt the exact same way about God. When it comes to approaching Him, it can feel like some people have better seats than others. Some people are simply closer. Some of us feel like we re in the back of the arena, while it seems like others have backstage, VIP access. It s almost like there s a velvet rope around certain parts of our faith. Those areas are reserved for special Christians, pastors, FCA leaders, and Bible experts. And, being real here, I think a lot of us would say, Hey, the VIP is definitely not me. I m not against the whole God thing. I come to church, sing the songs, and pray every once in a while. But most of the time, I feel like I m watching from the back of the crowd. I m definitely not in the all-access section with God. And there are a lot of reasons we may feel that way. But if we re honest, for most of us, our distance from God has less to do with what we think He s like, and more to do with our behavior. In a word, sin. Now, sin is not the most fun word, but it basically describes anything you do that is different from what God wants for you: Something you do that you shouldn t. Something you don t do that you should. Something in secret. Something from your past. Whether you call it sin or not, it s easy to disqualify yourself from having access to God because of your behavior. And even for those of you who d say you re all in with God, I bet the number one thing that makes you feel far away from God is your behavior. Bad behavior makes you think First, God is invisible. It s tough to feel close to someone you can t see and whose voice you never hear. He also seems old. Honestly, some of us get nervous talking to adults. And God seems older than time, and that s a little intimidating. It can also seem like God is mad. There s always somebody on a corner holding a sign about how God is angry with well, everyone. So like anybody else we think is mad at us, we keep our distance from God. And finally, He feels far away. This is the issue I deal with the most. It doesn t feel like God is near me throughout the day. He doesn t answer my texts or hang out with me on the weekends. So how do I get close to somebody like that? God doesn t like me. He isn t happy with me. He isn t with me or for me. He can t ever use me to do good. And because our behavior seems to be consistently bad or inadequate, we settle for the cheap-seats experience of God. We settle for showing up, but never getting too close. But here s what I want to challenge you with today: What if you re missing something? What if there s more to this story than your sin? What if the way you feel about God isn t the way He feels about you? What if you have A LOT more access than you ever thought? TRUTH 4 Minutes The idea of keeping your distance from God isn t a new one. It s been around as long as human beings have been in existence. And maybe, more than anybody else, the ancient Jewish people got this. For the Jews, their whole church experience was built around their behavior. Going to temple for them was very different than going to church is for us. They had strict laws and regulations for what they could do in the temple. They couldn t just march up to the front row, sing a few songs, hear a message, and then leave for lunch. Just like a concert, there were levels. Certain groups of people had to stay outside completely. Others were allowed a little bit closer. Some special people were allowed really close.

TEACHING SCRIPT 3 And then there was a place almost no one could go. This area was blocked off by a curtain and called the Most Holy Place or the Holy of Holies. It was where the Jewish people believed that the Spirit of God lived. Almost no one was allowed in. Only once a year, after several special cleansing ceremonies, would the high priest be allowed to go in. He was the only one with an all-access pass, and that was only granted once annually. If you weren t the high priest, there was NO CHANCE of you getting through the curtain. You had a 0% chance of getting closer to God than you currently were. The Jewish people saw God through a system. Some people had more access than others, but everyone had a limit. So it makes sense that when Jesus showed up when God literally sent his Son to Earth to be up close and personal with people it blew their minds. For some of the Jewish people, it seemed impossible that Jesus was sent by God. A great teacher, maybe. A total fraud, maybe. But he DIDN T fit the system of God behind the curtain. But then, Jesus predicted that He d be killed, and He was. He predicted that He d come back to life three days later, and He did. Should they still go to the temple? Which part should they stand in? How close could they or should they get? And while this letter was written a long time ago, I think what it says can make a huge impact on us, and whether we d consider ourselves close to God or really far away. The verse says this: And so, dear brothers and sisters, we can boldly enter heaven s Most Holy Place because of the blood of Jesus. By his death, Jesus opened a new and life-giving way through the curtain into the Most Holy Place (Hebrews 10:19-20 NLT). Remember, the Most Holy Place was as close to God as you could get. It was the backstage pass! And the writer is telling these Jewish Christians that because of Jesus, THEY can boldly go right in. In other words, there is no more separation. There is no more curtain. There are no more temple levels where some people are closer than others. For a lot of us in this room, this concept could change everything. Because we ve been under the impression that sin meant we need to keep our distance from God. We could peek in, hang out, and listen, but we couldn t be close. We think that s not what God wants. But that s not true. So when someone pulls that off, you can pretty much believe whatever else they have to say! As a result, some but not all of the Jewish people became followers of Jesus. And the part of the Bible we re going to look at today was a letter written specifically to them. While it s not super-clear who wrote this letter, the intent is obvious: After deciding to follow Jesus, these Jewish people had to figure out, now what? God was not okay with being separated from you. That s why He sent Jesus to be our all-access pass to Him. And when Jesus paid the price for our sin, and defeated the death that comes as a consequence of our sin, there was no longer a reason why we couldn t be up close and personal with God. Because the truth is this: Jesus gives you all-access to God. APPLICATION 2 Minutes So here s what I d love for you to do. First, think about this question: 1) What access do you currently think you have with God? What did you walk in here thinking? That you were out with God? That you had messed up too much for God to love you or ever be near you? Maybe you ve felt like what you ve done has consistently separated you from God. In some ways, you re right. Our sin DOES separate us from God. Sin ALWAYS separates. But Jesus didn t have that problem! He lived a sinless life and defeated the power that sin has over you and me. And because of Him, we can walk boldly right up to God.

TEACHING SCRIPT 4 2) Consider trading your access for His. Some of you need to make the life-changing decision to trade your access for His. To trust that what Jesus did for you outweighs the sin that separates you. And there are people here who can help you do that. Today, talk to your small group leader and let them know that you re ready to take that step. Others of you have already done that. You ve put your faith in Jesus and traded what you ve done for what He can do for you. You HAVE access. But it s easy to forget that and live as if you DON T have access. It s easy to live like your sin is bigger than Jesus sacrifice. Jesus is your all-access pass, so you don t have to stay far away from God just because you ve failed. You don t have to feel awkward with God because you haven t been to church in a while or read your Bible. You don t have to be afraid of God because of what you ve done. Jesus is your all-access. He can handle your sin, past, present, and future. LANDING 1 Minute So as you head out today, I want you to ask yourself this question: How close am I to God right now? Whether you feel like you re in the front row or way up in the nosebleeds, I want to remind you that there are no assigned seats. There is no curtain that you can t walk through! Jesus gives you all-access to God. And God wants to be close to you. TRANSITION INTO SMALL GROUPS
