Singles at OLPH In January, 2000, Debbie Fagnano met with Deacon Bob Beaumont at Christ the King Church to discuss the possibility of organizing a ministry for single, separated, divorced and widowed Catholics on the Westbank, since there weren t any such groups at that time. In February, 2000, twelve parishioners met at an informal home gathering to exchange ideas and friendship. They continued to meet monthly. In August, 2000, Deacon Drea Capaci of the Family Life Apostolate, Archdiocese of New Orleans, met with Debbie to discuss the future of this ministry. Our first Mass was celebrated in September, 2000, with almost 100 kindred spirits coming together from 17 church parishes on the Westbank. Another Mass was celebrated in December, 2000. Several months later, with the help of Deacon Bob and Deacon Drea, Westbank Catholic Singles became an official lay organization of the Archdiocese of New Orleans. In 2002, another small group formed at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, Belle Chasse. The mailing list grew to over 200. Masses continued to be celebrated quarterly until August, 2005. After the hurricane, activities were suspended. The core group from Christ the King Church no longer exists. The chapter from Our Lady of Perpetual Help continues to meet monthly for dinner on the second Friday of each month at 6:00 p.m. During Lent we encourage everyone to attend the weekly Mass, Stations of the Cross and K.C. Fish Fry. Carol Cooper makes our arrangements with restaurants on the Westbank that will give separate checks. Call Evelyn Mistich or Dolly Roy in the church office (504) 394-0314 to put your name on the Singles list. You will receive an e -mail or phone call to let you know where we will meet.

Pentecost Sunday Did You Know?? Pentecost is known as the birthday of the Church. We celebrate it fifty days after Easter. The Holy Spirit was poured out on the Church fifty days after Jesus rose. The apostles and Mary were together praying on the Jewish feast of Pentecost, a harvest feast. Suddenly loud wind rushed through the house and a flame settled over each person s head. All were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages. The fearful apostles were transformed into bold preachers. They went out and spoke to the crowds. Although people were from different lands, they could all understand the apostles. Peter gave a sermon about Jesus. About three thousand people were baptized that day and received the Holy Spirit. When we are baptized, the Holy Spirit comes to dwell in us too (cf. Acts 2:1-41). Confirmation Registration The sacrament of Confirmation is conferred in the Junior year of high school (11th grade) in the Archdiocese of New Orleans. OLPH celebrates this sacrament in the Fall each year. Preparation has begun, but it is not too late to join. High School Students in both Catholic and non-catholic schools should register for Confirmation as soon as possible. Registration is accepted as early as Freshman year. This will help us get in touch with you when the time comes for preparation classes. Registration can be done through our website at olphbc.org/hsr-forms. For more information check our website or contact C. C. Merritt at the parish office. Pope Francis: Confirmation is a Sacrament of the Holy Spirit. It is God who comes to us. It is not a sacrament of goodbye. After Confirmation, we must continue to go to church. https:/www.youtube.comwatchv=rnzf6pmq9ay Confirmation is not Graduation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvsogytxqcm Pope Francis: We can study the whole history of salvation, we can study the whole of Theology, but without the Spirit we cannot understand. It is the Spirit that makes us realize the truth or in the words of Our Lord it is the Spirit that makes us know the voice of Jesus. Rosary: The Luminous Mysteries In October of 2002, Saint Pope John Paul II released an Apostolic Letter called Rosarium Virginis Mariae, The Rosary of the Virgin Mary. In it, the Holy Father introduced a new set of mysteries, the Mysteries of Light, or the Luminous Mysteries. These focus on the public ministry of Jesus, and are said each Thursday. The five Luminous Mysteries are: The Baptism in the Jordan, which recounts the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist. (See Mark 1:4-11) The Wedding of Cana, where Jesus, at the prompting of His mother, performed His first public miracle, changing water into wine. (See John 2:1-11) The Proclamation of the Kingdom, which recalls the beginning of Jesus public ministry and His proclaiming, This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel. (See Mark 1:14-15) The Transfiguration, where Jesus goes up on Mount Tabor with Peter, James and John, converses with Moses and Elijah and is transfigured, revealing to them His glory. (See Luke 9:28-36) And the Institution of the Eucharist, reminding us of the greatest gift ever given to mankind, Jesus truly present, Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity in the Holy Eucharist. (See Luke 22:14-27) A Minute in the Church: Life in Christ, Gus Lloyd. Voca ons Crucifix The Voca ons Crucifix is a special crucifix that travels from family to family to inspire prayer for voca ons. It is to intercede for voca ons and encourage families to discuss priestly or other religious voca ons. The Crucifix, prayer brochure, and sign up sheets are on the voca ons table in the library. Thank you for your commitment to praying for voca ons.
