January 21, 2018 4 From the Pastor s Desk "This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe the Gospel." (Mk 1:15) These are the first words of Jesus in the Gospel of Mark. The essence of His message is very simple: it is time to repent and believe. Jesus is looking for conversion, a change of mindset and attitude that will leave us open to God. In Jesus language "repentance" means to make a 180 change of direction in our lives that leads to our conversion. He challenges us to rethink our notion of who God is and how God acts towards us in the light of our sins. God wants all sinners to repent, to turn away from everything that makes them deviate from the love and law of God. This is the conversion God called for at Nineveh through the prophet Jonah in the First Reading. In order to motivate the pagan inhabitants of Nineveh to repent of their sinful deeds, Jonah warned them saying, Nineveh shall be destroyed in forty days. Upon hearing God's message, the Ninevites repented and turned from their evil ways. God, seeing their sincerity, did not carry out his threats and forgave them. We too are called to conversion and need not wait to be threatened or warned! God's love should give us enough motivation. "This is the time of fulfillment. Now is the opportunity for Grace. The kingdom of God is at hand." The" Proclamation of the kingdom of God" is the third of the new mysteries that Pope St. John Paul II added to the Rosary, called the Mysteries of Light. As we struggle in our daily ongoing conversion, let us be aware and grateful that God's kingdom is in each of us. More importantly, God provides us all the graces we need for this kingdom to come alive in us. Finally, today s Gospel challenges us to be detached from worldly attachments. When Jesus called Simon Peter, Andrew, James and John to follow him, they immediately left their boats and followed him. The Gospel inspires us to have the courage to be free to leave behind whatever may be holding us back from responding to God's call. Let us ask for the grace to listen to God's call and respond generously and immediately just like the first Apostles. A special blessing for married couples On Sunday, February 4th, there will be a special blessing at the 9:15 AM Mass (Spanish) and 12:15 PM Mass (English) for those who are celebrating their (5th, 10th, 15th, 20th.) Wedding Anniversary. May God continue to bless all married couples with more happy and grace-filled years of togetherness and love! God bless you! Fr. John Francis

THIRD Sunday in Ordinary Time 5 RELIGIOUS EDUCATIONAL CORNER Sister Alice Michael, S.U.S.C. - Director of Faith Formation Contact Information 718 591-6536 For the next several weeks, we will be looking at the meaning of liturgy which includes the Mass, the seven sacraments, the Liturgy of the Hours, and sacramentals. Liturgy of the Hours is the daily prayer of the Church which is composed mainly of the Psalms found in the Old Testament, prayers and hymns and readings from Scripture. This prayer of the Church is prayed every day by Priests, Deacons, and Religious. It is also becoming more and more the daily prayer of many lay persons. Here at St. Nicholas of Tolentine, Morning Prayer, which is part of Liturgy of the Hours, is prayed every day after the 7:45 am Mass. The liturgy is an exercise of the priestly office of Jesus. It is through the liturgy that our sanctification is manifested by signs perceptible to the senses and is effected in a way which is proper to each of these signs. Every liturgical celebration is an action of Jesus, our priest, and of the Church, his Body. Next week we will continue with more details. God bless you! Sister Alice Michael, S.U.S.C. Hermana Alice Michael, S.U.S.C. Director de Formación de Fe MINISTRIES Attention ATTENTION PLEASE Extra-Ordinary (Eucharistic) Ministers We are in need of Extra-Ordinary Ministers who can visit the sick and homebound of our parish. Please pray and consider this extremely important act of charity and mercy. For many who are homebound in our parish the simple visit of an Extra-Ordinary Minister with the presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament is their greatest joy. If interested, please contact the rectory office at 718-969-3226 and leave a message for Fr. John Gribowich. If you are not an existing Extra-Ordinary Minister and would like to become one, please contact the rectory office as well. For those who would like to bring up the gifts during Mass, we ask that you please do the following: Sit in the pew directly in front of the gift table on the right side of the church; Speak with one of the ushers before Mass starts. Thank you.
