July 6, 2014 THE CHURCH IS CHRIST S INVENTION I don t know about you, but for some time now I ve gotten the feeling that the Catholic Church is superfluous for a lot of people. Many in our own country and right here on Long Island don t even bother to get married in a church or in some way that is recognized by the Church as valid. For example, there are venues, beaches, resorts and all sorts of other places for the celebration of the wedding rites. Baptisms are happening later and later and, in some cases but not all, the emphasis seems to be more on the party. This is also true of other sacraments. Of course, there is nothing wrong with a great family gathering but the main thing is the sacrament itself. Funerals and the last sacraments appear to be a noticeable exception to this trend. At the time of serious illness and/or death Catholics (almost all) want to see a priest Thank God! In this parish I am particularly impressed by the warmth and friendliness with which I am greeted at wakes and when I visit the sick. This is a great tribute to the faith and devotion of our people. It is something to be admired and commended. Last week Pope Francis spoke about the importance of the Church. He was very direct and to the point: There are those who believe you can have a personal, direct, immediate relationship with Jesus Christ outside of the communion and mediation of the Church. The Holy Father rejected this type of thinking and indicated that you can t be a Christian without the Church. In this he was saying nothing new or extraordinary. As a matter of fact, St. Cyprian of Carthage who was martyred in 258 said this: You cannot have God for your Father unless you have the Church for your Mother. Christ and His Church go hand in hand. We all have heard endless times the trendy saying: I m spiritual, but not religious. I m not exactly sure what that means since the word spiritual can have all sorts of meanings. It may mean you do what you want and no outside authority can tell you what you should or should not do. It is a rejection of authority. The fact is when you read the New Testament (either Catholic or Protestant versions) you see a structured Church with deacons, priests and bishops. You see a Pope with divine authority: You are Peter and on this Rock I will build my Church. (Matt. 16:18) That is the way Jesus set up everything. There was nothing vague about the Church it was the most definite thing in the world. It had rules, leaders and sacraments. The apostles were sent out by Christ to teach and baptized this was the Great Commission the
apostles of Christ and their successors were to celebrate Mass until the end of time: Do this in memory of me. (Mk. 22:19) The Catholic Church was founded by Christ Himself. It will endure to the end of time and neither hell nor any human power will ever be able to destroy it. Many have tried none have been successful. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. SUGGESTIONS FOR THE MONTH OF JULY The month of July, by tradition, is dedicated to The Most Precious Blood of Jesus. The Blood that coursed through the veins of Christ was part of the Sacred Humanity made possible by the maternity of Mary. Our Lord s Blood poured out on the Cross purchased our salvation, washed clean the robes of the martyrs, and gave birth to the Church as it flowed from His wounded side. July s longer and warmer days give us the opportunity to grow in holiness, frequenting the sacraments and receiving the Blood of Christ, and giving witness by our conduct, our speech, the modesty in the clothes we wear, of the Christ we profess to everyone we meet. As our Pope Francis tells us the basis for evangelization is a conversion to the love of Jesus, which turns us into a witness to God s Love to everyone poor and needy. He and his team will work alongside staff to care for the children, and bring supplies. He is raising funds for the team through Funds2Orgs, an organization that refurbishes footwear for resale. Any shoes you could give would be welcome adult s or children s shoes. A box will be set up in the vestibule of St. Aidan Church to collect donated footwear. At a private dancing school, I have been assisting in a special needs dance class for a few months to help prepare. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION ATTENTION ALL VOLUNTEERS: Are you aware that the Diocese of Rockville Centre requires ANYONE IN ANY MINISTRY TO BE VIRTUS TRAINED AND HAVE A BACKGROUND CHECK? A ministry includes Catechists to CYO Coaches, Ushers to Liturgical Ministers, and all parish organization members. Check the Virus Training Schedule and Register Online for a class being offered by several parishes at www.drvc.org. CONFIRMATION SCHEDULED: Bishop Brennan will administer the Sacrament of Confirmation at St. Aidan s on Saturday, October 18, 2014. He will officiate at two Confirmation Liturgies at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM. All candidates were notified about their assigned ceremonies. CONFIRMATION CANDIDATES: All students who are Confirmation candidates for Confirmation 2014 and 2015 should submit any outstanding projects, reflections, and/or service hours to the Religious Education office. Candidates who need to schedule a test or interview should also contact the Religious Education office as soon as possible. Students entering Grade 7 this September received letters about getting an early start on their 7 th grade community service hours. REGISTRATION FOR THE 2014-2015 SCHOOL YEAR The registration period will soon be ending. Registration packages were mailed to all families who had students enrolled in Religious Education during the past school year. Parents who will be registering a child for the first time in the program should contact the Religious Education Office at (516) 746-6585 x9404 for registration materials. A copy of a child s Baptismal Certificate MUST accompany the registration for any new students. Students will be placed in classes on a first come first served basis so please register as soon as possible. Registration will remain open until July 15, 2014. CATECHISTS NEEDED: The Religious Education office is looking for individuals who are willing to serve as teachers to pass on their Catholic Faith to students enrolled in our program. Prior experience is not necessary. Training is provided. Please give prayerful consideration to answering this call for teachers. A bus will take you from the parking lot of the Williston Park American Legion Post 144, 730 Willis Avenue, Williston Park at 9:00 A.M. to Resorts Casino.
