The Pastor's Page We attend Mass not only to witness the sacrifice of Christ but to become part of it. "I appeal to you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God." - Romans 12:1 "May he [Christ] make of us an eternal offering to you [the Father], so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect." - Eucharistic Prayer III The Holiday Season Can you believe that next Thursday is Thanksgiving? The holiday season is upon us! I know many Christians look for "things to throw" when they hear the term "holiday season." I'm not sure why. Years before the battle over Christmas began, I remember using the term to include the time from Thanksgiving to New Year's which includes Christmas but is book-ended by secular holidays. Actually, I get upset when I hear "Turkey Day." Although Thanksgiving is a secular holiday, it expresses a religious sentiment. Forget about secularism - why most people make everything inane? I also think of the proliferation of "Keep Calm and X" T-shirts. The original words, "Keep Calm and Carry On" expressed a noble sentiment, if not a religious one, of persevering in the face of tremendous challenges. The original context was the bombing of London in World War II. But I digress! As Christians, we gather every Sunday (some of you on evenings) to give thanks to God. In the past year, I strove to teach the parish more about our key ritual, the Eucharist. Hopefully you heard along the way that Eucharist, in Greek, means something like thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a holy word! How holy of our nation to break one day each year to give thanks together! You may also remember a slogan I have promoted in my homilies, the 3 G's of "Grace - Gratitude - Generosity." In the first step, we realize that everything is grace, that is, everything is the gift of God. God is good, God is gracious. This is the way that religious people see the world. It is not a resource to be exploited, it is a gift to be unwrapped. In the second step, we are moved to give God thanks for the wondrous gifts which surround us. In another word, thanksgiving! In the third step, we realize it is not enough to simply give thanks. God's graciousness has profoundly changed us. We are moved to respond to God's graciousness with personal generosity. May I make a bold suggestion? We all know the holidays can be expensive. Hosting big dinners, throwing parties or attending parties (decorations, new dresses and suits, getting the hair done!), travel and of course gift-buying also cost lots of money. Are there places you can cut back? Will you make an effort to save money during the holiday season, so that in the new year you have a "generosity fund?" It will surely be a profound expression of your thanksgiving unto God, of your true Christmas spirit, that will start the new year in the footsteps of Christ.

FOOD PANTRY At St. Nicholas of Tolentine Church 1409 Pacific Avenue Your donation of food, money and/or time are always welcome! Come every third Monday of the month between 8:00 am & 11:00 am on Memorial Ave. (Rear of church property) Please come early. We look forward to being with you and praying with you. Join Us Women's Prayer Night SERVING THE LORD While the parish strives to serve the community, our first responsibility is to serve the Lord. One often overlooked way to do that is to say grace before and after each meal. This is particularily important when dining in a public eatery. What a great way to show the community that you are a committed Catholic. Women ages 18-35 are invited to a Handmaid's Prayer Night with the Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal at St. Michael's convent on December 8th at 7:00 PM. The night includes Holy Mass, adoration, confession, music, Rosary, night prayer and social. For more information and to RSVP, please call the convent at 609-343-1545. BY THE NUMBERS PARISH COLLECTION FOR NOV. 11 - NOV. 12 OFFERTORY................ $13,055.00 BUDGET.................. $12,506.00 POOR BOX................... $221.00 MANY THANKS FOR YOUR GENEROSITY NUMBER OF REGISTERED HOUSEHOLDS..... 1977 DEAR VISITOR I always thank God for time away, whether on a European vacation or on a day trip. I know many people do not have these opportunities. Therefore, when I attend Mass, I show my gratitude with a particularly generous gift to the local church. I am grateful for your generosity to us. Also, please tip your housekeepers and other hospitality staff they are our parishioners! WHY A SECOND COLLECTION? About 15 times a year, the US bishops ask parishes to take a second collection for a special cause of national or international significance. For the sake of simplicity, our parish always takes a second collection. On unassigned Sundays, the second collection supports our parish in the same way as the first. SUPPORTING YOUR PARISH You can help ensure that Catholicism has a bright and solid future in Atlantic City. To the extent you are able, will you give to the parish from the blessings you have received from God? You can sponsor a school student, have a chalice engraved with the name of a loved one, have a memorial stone placed by the Mother Lewis statue, purchase a pew bible, even support building renovations. Giving is easy, quick, and secure if you use our online giving page. Go to http://accatholic.org/ how-you-can-help/66-giving-opportunities-01 Of course you can still call the office and mail in your donations. RENOVATION UPDATE BLACK CATHOLIC MINISTRY Promote a vibrant ministry that will spiritually nurture and sustain Black Catholics within the Diocese and that will ensure the survival, growth, and liturgical expression of Black Catholics in the Diocese who originated from Africa, Haiti, North and South America, or elsewhere in the African Diaspora. Evangelize Blacks outside of the Catholic community to grow the Black Catholic community. Foster understanding, appreciation and respect of Black Catholic culture and worship among all Catholics within the Diocese for the continuing conversion and transformation of the faithful into the one body of Christ. Be a voice to the Bishop for the diverse populations of Black Catholics within the Diocese. Create opportunities for and foster support of greater Black Catholic involvement in lay ministry for leadership at the parish and diocesan levels. Promote interest in vocations to the priesthood, diaconate, and religious congregations among the Black Catholic community and work to remove barriers where they exist. STEWARDSHIP 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time Stewardship Grows Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you have been faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. - MATTHEW 25:21 In Stewardship God expects us to nurture and develop the gifts He has given us and then generously return a portion with increase. He doesn t want us to waste or hoard the gifts He has given us; He expects us to grow our gifts, use them wisely and be generous with them. Unfortunately, many of us are not generous in proportion to all that God has given us. That we as Christian Stewards answer God s call to nurture and develop our gifts and return them with increase. Asbestos Abatement is being done this week and the installment of the church new flooring has started.

No quiere que desperdiciemos ni acumulemos los dones que Él nos ha dado; Él espera que hagamos crecer nuestros dones, los usemos sabiamente y seamos generosos con ellos.
