Kinder-2nd February 21-22, 2015 John 6:1-14, John 3:16 Adventure Bible for Early Readers (p. 1243-1244, 1239) Connect Time (15 minutes): Five minutes after the service begins, split kids into groups and begin their activity. Large Group (30 minutes): Begin 20 minutes after the service starts. Model what it looks like to be engaged in large group. Feeding the 5000 Jesus Can Do Anything! Prepare for today s lesson by thinking of a time when Jesus provided for you, and how it brought you closer to him. Kids really pay attention to personal examples, so share it during large group! Small Group (15 minutes): Keep kids in small groups until parents arrive. If you all have extra time at the end, you can review the video and songs together. Ask kids about what they ve written on their fish art; what are they thankful for Jesus doing? Today s story is a great example of God s provision. Not only did Jesus feed 5000 people, he filled them completely full, and there were even leftovers! God s abundance is clear in this story, and that s a reason for us to be thankful.

Goal: Connect Time is all about engaging kids in an activity that allows them to connect with each other right away while simultaneously piquing their curiosity for Large Group and preparing their minds for what they re going to hear. WHAT S YOUR SUPERPOWER? *Break kids up into small groups for this activity. Lay out a large tear off sheet of paper along with boxes of markers. Gather kids around the paper and tell them to draw a picture of themselves with a special superpower (flying, being super fast, extra strength, magical powers, etc) Encourage kids to use their imaginations and think of a power that they would want more than anything else! After everyone has drawn on the paper, go around the circle and ask these two questions: 1. What superpower did you draw yourself with? 2. What was the best or worst part of your week? Before you head into Large Group, remind them about your expectations for their behavior: (1) be kind, (2) listen when somebody speaks, and (3) follow the leader s instructions.

Goal: Kids will (1) learn about how Jesus performed a miracle and fed the 5000, and (2) understand how we can trust Jesus to do miracles in our own lives too. Why: Jesus did a lot of amazing things in his lifetime, and he s continuing to do them today. We want kids to recognize what Jesus is doing in their own lives. Tip: Encourage kids to think about miracles in their own lives-give some examples of amazing things you ve experienced because of Jesus to help them understand what a miracle is. Review and Dig Deeper: *Pass around a bean bag to the person who s speaking. Each group member should be prepared to hold the bean bag and answer questions. 1. Why did so many people follow Jesus everywhere? 2. What did Jesus want to do for all those people when he saw they were hungry? 3. How did Jesus get 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish? 4. What did Jesus do with the bread and fish? 5. Why did Jesus feed all the people? 6. Does Jesus still do amazing miracles today? FISH ART Ask kids what food Jesus used to feed 5000 people (bread and fish). Pass out paper fish cutouts and markers, and tell kids that we are creating fish art today to remind us of how Jesus provided what all those people needed using just a few fish! Tell kids to think of one thing they are thankful for that Jesus has given them. Once they ve thought of it, they can write it down or draw it on one side of the fish. On the other side of the fish, they can decorate it like a real fish! They can use markers to give it a face, fins, scales, patterns, bubbles, etc. As kids are working, ask them things like What other things has Jesus done for you?, What miracles have you seen?, How does it make you feel to know Jesus can do anything? (Continued on next page)

Prayer Thank you for doing amazing things for us, Jesus. We love you so much for being willing to do miracles because you love us. Amen! Extra time? Have kids do the coloring page! After that, have the kids lay out all their fishes on the table. Go around and take turns guessing which fish belongs to which kid!

1 Make sure to watch today s video ( Filled Full ); it s all about how Jesus fed 5000 people out of five loaves and two fish. The video helps explain the story in a very understandable and personal way, and it can help you with preparing for the lesson. Find it at http://crossroadskidsclub.net/weekend/. Here s the worship videos we ll be watching. You can look them up ahead of time: You Come in a Hurry http://vimeo.com/49927835 More Like You Are: http://vimeo.com/108496270 *Click to play intro music Hey everybody! Welcome to Kids Club! We re really glad you re here today. Let s talk about the superpowers we all just imagined in our small group. I want to hear what some of your superpowers would be! (Call on several kids to share their superpowers with the group.) Wow, those sound amazing! You know, I would love to (insert a superpower you would like to have). As amazing as these superpowers would be, there is someone who could do even more amazing things. Do you all know who that might be? (Let them answer Jesus.) that s right, Jesus had incredible abilities! Today we re going to learn about one of the most amazing things he did, and it involves food! (Click to show food slide.) Raise your hand if you love food? (Let kids raise their hands.) Give me a thumbs down if you ve ever been really, really hungry? (Let kids raise hands.) Me too. INTRO: FEEDING THE 5000 Our story starts with Jesus and his disciples. They were traveling all over the place, and Jesus was performing amazing miracles for lots of people. He was pretty tired though, so he needed a little break. Has anybody ever needed some alone time, to just be by yourself? (Let kids respond.) Well so did Jesus! The thing is, lots of people knew about Jesus, and they followed him everywhere! One day, when Jesus went up onto a mountain, all these people followed him. How many people do you think were there? (Let a few kids guess.) There were at least 5000 people! Can you imagine 5000 people following you around?! Well even though Jesus wanted to be alone, he loved every single one of those people. He cared about them, just likes he cares about you and me!

Now if you went hiking up a mountain and waited around all day with no food, how would you feel? (Let kids respond.) That s right, you d be really hungry! Can you all rub your bellies and pretend like you re hungry? (Make groaning noises and rub your stomach along with kids.) Well so were these 5000 people! We re going to watch a video that show what happened next. As you watch, pay special attention to what Jesus does to feed all the people. VIDEO: Jesus Storybook Bible/Filled Full Who can tell me what Jesus did to feed everyone? (Let a kid respond.) That s right, he created lots and lots of food out of just 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish! It was a miracle. Can you all say miracle? (Let kids repeat.) A miracle is something that would be impossible for a regular person to do. But Jesus isn t just a regular human, is he? He actually IS God! BRING WHAT YOU HAVE Let s talk about that little boy who brought the 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish. Jesus asked the people to BRING WHAT YOU HAVE. He knew that there would only be 5 loaves and 2 fish, but he knew that he could do ANYTHING, even with a tiny amount of food! Does anybody remember what the disciples said when the little boy brought his food? (Let a kid respond.) That s right, they laughed! They thought there s no way that tiny amount of food can feed us all! That s ridiculous! But did Jesus laugh? (Let kids respond.) No way! He trusted that God would provide everything. JESUS TRUSTS GOD How did Jesus do this miracle? Did he play a trick on everyone and have all the food hiding under his shirt? (Let kids respond, No! ) Did he run really fast to a grocery store and carry it all back? (Let kids respond, No! ) Did he do it like a magician and pull the food out of a hat? (Let kids respond, No! ) Well how did he do it then? (Call on a kid to answer.) He did it with God s help! Jesus is God s son, and that means that he is fully God and fully man. God gave him the power to turn 5 loaves and 2 fish into enough food for 5000 people! Let s read a special verse about what he did before he handed out the food: SLIDE: Mark 6:41: Jesus took the five loaves and two fish. He looked up to heaven and gave thanks. What did Jesus do when he looked up to heaven? (Let kids respond.) That s right, he gave thanks. That s because he knew that God is the one who made the bread and the fish in the first place! He wanted to thank God for making everything. He trusted God. JESUS CAN DO ANYTHING Jesus can do more than any superhero we ve ever heard of! He can heal the sick, and feed 5000 people out of nothing, he even rose from the dead! No one in the world has ever done that, except for Jesus.

We re going to play a game. I m going to tell you something, and if you think Jesus could do it, then jump up and clap! If you think he couldn t do it, than just stay seated. Ready? Could Jesus Could Jesus turn a whole jug of water into grape juice? Could Jesus make a blind person able to see? Could Jesus make a person able to walk when they ve never been able to walk their whole life? Could Jesus talk to God? Could Jesus raise a girl from the dead? Could Jesus love people even if they hate him? Could Jesus know what you are thinking all the time? Could Jesus love and forgive you even when you do wrong things? Could Jesus rise from the dead himself? The answer to all those, is YES! Not only can he do things, he actually already did! The Bible tells us about all those amazing miracles he did, and he s still doing today! We can trust Jesus to take care of us no matter what, because he will always love us, and he s willing to do anything for us, even die on a cross. Let s sing some worship songs to Jesus right now to thank him for doing so much! VIDEO: You Come in a Hurry VIDEO: More Like You Are PRAYER Jesus, thank you for loving us so much that you heal the sick, and rise from the dead. We love you for feeding all those people when they were hungry, and for helping us when we need it. Amen!
