The Gathering of God s People Please stand for the procession of choir and clergy and for the singing of the hymn Processional Hymn Unto us a boy is born! King of all creation, Came he to a world forlorn, The Lord of every nation. Cradled in a stall was he With sleepy cows and asses, But the very beasts could see That he all men surpasses. Herod then with fear was filled: A prince, he said, in Jewry! And all the little boys he killed At Bethl em in his fury. Now may Mary s son who came So long ago to love us, Lead us all with hearts aflame Unto the joys above us. Omega and Alpha he! Let the organ thunder, While the choir with peals of glee Doth rend the air asunder. Tune: Puer Nobis Latin, 15th century Melody from Piae Cantiones 1582 tr. Percy Dearmer (1867-1936) The Greeting In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all, and also with you. The Call to Penitence Christ the light of the world has come to dispel the darkness of our hearts. Let us turn to the light and confess our sins. Kyrie (sung by the choir) Kyrie eleison; Christe eleison; Kyrie eleison. Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy; Lord, have mercy. The priest pronounces the Absolution: Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy on you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Gloria (sung by the choir) Gloria in excelsis Deo, et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis. Glory be to God on high, and in earth peace, good will towards men. Laudamus te, benedicimus te, adoramus te, glorificamus te. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee Gratias agimus tibi propter magnam gloriam tuam. We give thanks to thee for thy great glory, Domine Deus, Rex coelestis, Deus Pater omnipotens. O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty. Domine Fili unigenite, Jesu Christe. O Lord, the only-begotten Son Jesu Christ; Domine Deus, Agnus Dei, Filius Patris. O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, Qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us Qui tollis peccata mundi, suscipe deprecationem nostram. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Qui sedes ad dexteram Patris, miserere nobis. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. Quoniam tu solus sanctus, tu solus Dominus, tu solus altissimus, For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord; thou only, O Christ, Jesu Christe, cum sancto Spiritu in gloria Dei Patris. Amen. With the Holy Spirit art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen. The Collect of the Day Almighty God, who wonderfully created us in your own image and yet more wonderfully restored us through your Son Jesus Christ: Grant that, as he came to share in our humanity, so we may share the life of his divinity; who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Please sit Proclaiming and Receiving the Word The First Reading 1 Samuel 2:18-20, 26 A reading from the first book of Samuel: Samuel was ministering before the Lord, a boy wearing a linen ephod. His mother used to make for him a little robe and take it to him each year, when she went up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice. Then Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, and say, May the Lord repay you with children by this woman for the gift that she made to the Lord ; and then they would return to their home.

Now the boy Samuel continued to grow both in stature and in favour with the Lord and with the people. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. The Psalm Psalm 148 O praise the Lord from heaven: praise him in the height. Praise him all ye angels of his: praise him all his host. Praise him sun and moon: praise him all ye stars and light. Praise him all ye heavens: and ye waters that are above the heavens. Let them praise the Name of the Lord: for he spake the word and they were made, he commanded and they were created. He hath made them fast for ever and ever: he hath given them a law which shall not be broken. Praise the Lord from earth: ye dragons and all deeps; Fire and hail snow and vapours: wind and storm fulfilling his word; Mountains and all hills: fruitful trees and all cedars; Beasts and all cattle: worms and feathered fowls; Kings of the earth and all people: princes and all judges of the world. Young men and maidens old men and children, praise the Name of the Lord: for his Name only is excellent, and his praise above heaven and earth. He shall exalt the horn of the people, all his saints shall praise him: even the children of Israel, even the people that serveth him. The Second Reading Colossians 3: 12-17 A reading from the letter of Paul to the Colossians: As God s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Gospel Acclamation Please stand for the Gospel Procession as the Acclamation is sung by the choir

The Gospel Reading Luke 2: 41-52 Hear the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St N. Response All turn to face the reader Every year the parents of Jesus went to Jerusalem for the festival of the Passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up as usual for the festival. When the festival was ended and they started to return, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but his parents did not know it. Assuming that he was in the group of travellers, they went a day s journey. Then they started to look for him among their relatives and friends. When they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem to search for him. After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. When his parents saw him they were astonished; and his mother said to him, Child, why have you treated us like this? Look, your father and I have been searching for you in great anxiety. He said to them, Why were you searching for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father s house? But they did not understand what he said to them. Then he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them. His mother treasured all these things in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and in years, and in divine and human favour. This is the gospel of the Lord. Response The Sermon The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. please stand

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified; who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy, catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Prayers of the People Lord, in your mercy hear our prayer Merciful Father, accept these our prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. All sit or kneel please stand The Peace The priest introduces the peace with these words Unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and his name shall be called the Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9.6 The priest says The peace of the Lord be always with you, and also with you. Those present may offer one another a sign of peace.

Celebrating at the Lord s Table Offertory Hymn We have a gospel to proclaim, Good news for men in all the earth, The gospel of a Saviour s name: We sing his glory, tell his worth. Tell of his birth at Bethlehem, Not in a royal house or hall, But in a stable dark and dim: The Word made flesh, a light for all. Tell of his death at Calvary, Hated by those he came to save, In lonely suffering on the cross: For all he loved, his life he gave. Tell of that glorious Easter morn, Empty the tomb, for he was free: He broke the power of death and hell That we might share his victory. Tell of his reign at God s right hand, By all creation glorified: He sends his Spirit on his Church, To live for him, the Lamb who died. Now we rejoice to name him King: Jesus is Lord of all the earth. This gospel-message we proclaim; We sing his glory, tell his worth. Tune: Fulda William Gardiner in Sacred Melodies, 1815 Edward Burns (b. 1938) The Preparation of the Altar at the taking of the bread and wine the priest says Be present, be present, Lord Jesus Christ, our risen high priest; make yourself known in the breaking of bread. Amen. The Taking of the Bread and Wine the priest says Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us: therefore let us celebrate the feast. The Great Thanksgiving The Lord be with you. and also with you Lift up your hearts. we lift them to the Lord Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. it is right to give our thanks and praise. Father, almighty and everliving God, at all times and in all places it is right to give you thanks and praise:

And now we give you thanks because, in the incarnation of the Word, a new light has dawned upon the world; you have become one with us that we might become one with you in your glorious kingdom. And so with all your people, with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and saying: The choir sings Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus, Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis. heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest! Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Hosanna in excelsis. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest! Blessed are you, Father, the creator and sustainer of all things; you made us in your own image, male and female you created us; even when we turned away from you, you never ceased to care for us, but in your love and mercy you freed us from the slavery of sin, giving your only begotten Son to become man and suffer death on the cross to redeem us: he made there the one complete and all-sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world: he instituted, and in his holy Gospel commanded us to continue, a perpetual memory of his precious death until he comes again. On the night that he was betrayed he took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks to you, he gave it to them, saying, Drink this, all of you, for this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. All remain standing

The choir sings and all repeat each line Accept through him, our great high priest, this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; and as we eat and drink these holy gifts, grant by the power of the life-giving Spirit that we may be made one in your holy Church and partakers of the body and blood of your Son, that he may dwell in us and we in him: Through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, Almighty Father, for ever and ever. Amen. The Lord s Prayer As our Saviour taught us we are bold to say Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, For ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread The priest breaks the consecrated bread for communion and says The bread which we break is a sharing in the body of Christ. We being many are one body, for we all share in the one bread.

The Communion Jesus Christ is the Lamb of God, who has taken away the sins of the world. Happy are those who are called to his supper. Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed. Please sit while the choir sings Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, grant us peace. Communion Motet The angel Gabriel from heaven came, His wings as drifted snow, his eyes as flame: All hail, said he, thou lowly maiden Mary, Most highly favoured lady! Gloria! For known a blessed Mother thou shalt be; All generations laud and honour thee: Thy son shall be Emmanuel, by seers foretold. Most highly favoured lady! Gloria! Then gentle Mary meekly bowed her head; To me be as it pleaseth God! she said. My soul shall laud and magnify his holy Name. Most highly favoured lady! Gloria! Of her Emmanuel, the Christ, was born, In Bethlehem, all on a Christmas morn; And Christian folk throughout the world will ever say: Most highly favoured lady! Gloria! Basque Traditional Carol Arranged by Edgar Pettman (1866-1943) Translation: Sabine Baring-Gould (1834-1924) The Communion Hymn Silent night, holy night All is calm, all is bright 'Round yon virgin mother and Child Holy infant so tender and mild Sleep in heavenly peace Sleep in heavenly peace Silent night, holy night, Son of God, love's pure light. Radiant beams from Thy holy face, With the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus, Lord at Thy birth Jesus, Lord at Thy birth Tune: Stille Nacht G.B. Timms 1910 1997) Franz Gruber (1787 1863) based on Joseph Mohr (1792 1848) The Great Silence The silence is broken by the post-communion prayer.

Going Out as God s People Prayer after Communion Heavenly Father, you have refreshed us with this heavenly sacrament. As your Son came to live among us, grant us grace to live our lives, united in love and obedience, as those who long to live with him in heaven; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Father of all, we give you thanks and praise, that when we were still far off you met us in your Son and brought us home. Dying and living, he declared your love, gave us grace, and opened the gate of glory. All say: May we who share Christ s body live his risen life; we who drink his cup bring life to others; we whom the Spirit lights give light to the world. Keep us firm in the hope you have set before us, so we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Postcommunion Hymn God rest you merry, gentlemen, let nothing you dismay, For Jesus Christ our Saviour was born upon this day, To save us all from Satan s power when we had gone astray: O tidings of comfort and joy! From God our heavenly Father a blessèd angel came, And unto certain shepherds brought tidings of the same, How that in Bethlehem was born the Son of God by name: O tidings of comfort and joy! The shepherds at those tidings rejoicèd much in mind, And left their flocks a-feeding in tempest, storm, and wind; And went to Bethlehem straightway this blessèd babe to find: O tidings of comfort and joy!

But when to Bethlehem they came, whereat this infant lay, They found him in a manger, where oxen feed on hay; His mother Mary, kneeling down, unto her Lord did pray: O tidings of comfort and joy! Now to the Lord sing praises, all you within this place, And with true love and brotherhood each other now embrace; This holy tide of Christmas all others doth efface: O tidings of comfort and joy! Tune: God Rest You Merry London Carol Melody Traditional The Blessing & Dismissal The priest blesses the people with these words Chris the Son of God, born of Mary, fill you with his grace to trust his promises and obey his will; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, be with you and remain with you always. Amen. The priest or the deacon says or sings Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. The choir and the people sing Please stand for the procession of choir and clergy and sit for the Organ Voluntary which concludes the service
