Volume 33, Issue No.8 August 2017 Monthly Publication of Christ Lutheran Church Marietta, GA Sunday Worship Services 8:45 and 11:00 A Letter From Pastor Tim Hello All. Even though school is going, we are still in the season of summer, if the heat didn t give that away. We are busy in the church office preparing for The Story, starting a new church database, and getting other fun things lined up for fall. During the busiest time in life it s good to take some time to laugh. So here are some Bible jokes to share with some friends along with a cool glass of lemonade or tea! Enjoy! Q. What kind of man was Boaz before he married? A. Ruthless. Q. Who was the greatest financier in the Bible? A. Noah. He was floating his stock while everyone else was in liquidation. Q. What was the greatest female financier in the Bible? A. Pharaoh's daughter. She went down to the bank of the Nile and drew out a little prophet. Q. What kind of motor vehicles are in the Bible? A. Jehovah drove Adam and Eve out of the Garden in a Fury. David's Triumph was heard throughout the land. Also, probably a Honda, because the apostles were all in one Accord. Q. Who was the greatest comedian in the Bible? A. Samson. He brought the house down. Q. What excuse did Adam give to his children as to why he no longer lived in Eden? A. Your mother ate us out of house and home. Q. Which servant of God was the most flagrant lawbreaker in the Bible? A. Moses. He broke all 10 commandments at once. Q. Which area of Palestine was especially wealthy? A. The area around Jordan. The banks were always overflowing. Q. Who is the greatest baby sitter mentioned in the Bible? A. David. He rocked Goliath to a very deep sleep. Q. Which Bible character had no parents? A. Joshua, son of Nun.

And, finally, Q. Why didn't they play cards on the Ark? A. Because Noah was standing on the deck. God s Peace, Pastor Tim Greetings Church Family- August marks the beginning of the school year for many of our families, even as it seems like Summer just started. It is a time to get back in routines and a chance to start fresh. Through the leadership of our committees, I'm very excited about how our congregation will have new opportunities to grow in Christ thru our worship services, our fellowship opportunities, and fulfilling our mission to serve our community. I hope that all of you consider becoming involved in some of these opportunities, as there really is something for everyone. I can tell you for my family, the more involved we have become has led to a more fulfilling experience. My ask is that you try something new this Fall and see for yourself how rewarding it can be while you grow with Christ. God Bless, Mike Mahler

VP & Mutual Ministry Hard to believe half of 2017 is already behind us. School is back in session, and Christmas will be here before you know it! Our Mutual Ministry Committee is off to a good start for 2017. We have finalized a personnel policy for our paid staff, which has been approved and issued by Council. We also have made progress in our search for a second nursery attendant. Thanks to Julie Ridings and Lynne Edwards for leading the interview process. Our next project is focused on developing a Youth Protection Policy that will protect our youth, children and volunteers and their participation in our ministry. We are committed as a congregation to keep all who participate in our ministry safe and secure, and appreciate any and all feedback as we complete this work. Please reach out to any member of the MMC with any questions or suggestions. God s peace, Tom Mabry VP & Mutual Ministry Because He Wanted To A few weeks back Pastor Tim passed on to me an interesting news article ( https://goo.gl/5ub8dv ). This article is about the highest-paid player in the NFL, Derek Carr. Some of you that follow football may have already read about his $125 million contract, but what you might not have read about it is what Derek Carr wants to do with it. When asked what he was going to splurge on his response was, first thing I ll do is I ll pay my tithe like I

have since I was in college, getting $700 on scholarship. That won t change. Derek shares his excitement to be able to help people, a lot of people. He says, I have a very strong faith in God. He is the reason I play football. He has given me this special talent and I want to use it to glorify Him. I am grateful for the opportunity to further His kingdom by sharing my faith on and off the football field. Please take a moment to read the article by using the shortened link above or the full link below. This is a clear example of a man that had little to start with. He gave A Cheerful Sacrifice with his college scholarship money and has maintained throughout his life his love and gratitude with God. He says I want to use it to glorify Him. There is no right or wrong way, as Christians, to determine an amount we give as individuals. Some of us need a set plan, meeting a weekly budgeted amount, or maybe it s growth you want to witness for an issue you re passionate about. What we can find by reading this story is that Derek Carr recognizes his talent is God given, as all we have is from God. He uses his talent, and the benefits that come from it, to worship and glorify God. At the same time as I received this article I had read a paragraph in the book Giving to God by Mark Allan Powell. A quote from Donald W. Hinze: Generosity with gifts is the way to spiritual maturity. We should note here that gifts is not always money, it is our time, our possessions, even our physical body. People are not naturally disposed to giving, yet, the life we all prize, filled with joy and spiritual depth, is closely tied to giving generously and with thankful hearts. Derek has clearly set his heart on God first. I believe Derek has set stewardship as a spiritual discipline in his life. Derek gave because he wanted to. Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also (Matthew 6:21). Calling All Lectors/Sunday Readers: By now you have heard that we are starting The Story in September. This means that there will be no celebrate inserts in the bulletins and the Sunday readings will come from the books that we will be receiving. I propose that we have a meeting with ALL Lectors and potential readers between the services (10:00-10:45) in the sanctuary on August 20, 2017. Come prepared with questions, comments, concerns and together we will be prepared for the scripture readings on Sunday mornings. Questions: Sue Burkhart, 770-499-8271. Fellowship Committee: Greetings, We hope that everyone enjoyed the Low Country Boil and hearing all about Julia and Vincent s mission work in Kenya. Lisa and I would like to thank everyone who helped with this event to make it a success! We are now in the process of planning this year s 2nd annual picnic for September which will be held after the 11:00 service at church more information to follow. Upcoming events include our annual Trunk or Treat in October and our church Christmas Party to round out the year, look for more information on these events in the coming months. God s blessings, Lois and Lisa

Witness/Evangelism Committee: Every summer we spend ten days in July attending a nationwide youth bowling tournament. Each year we travel to a different city, and this year it was Cleveland, Ohio. During our trip, I realized that how welcomed we felt by each place we went to contributed to how satisfied we were with the city, the bowling tournament, or both. (It is also the reason we look forward to some cities and dread others!) This year we went twice to a local restaurant, liked some pro bowlers better than others, and made it a point to say goodbye to a few hotel staff before leaving. Why? Because each one had made us feel welcomed and appreciated. I have often wondered if our welcomes to our CLC guests make a difference. AfterCleveland I can definitively say that they do! Unleashing Salt and Light, Tiffany (with Joe, Braden, and Evan s help!) Sorrentino Romans 15:7 Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.

Budget & Finance Committee: The budget and finance committee continues to be busy with several projects. We continue to review all policies and procedures involving cash handling and other accounting functions in the church. We are currently working on preparing written instructions for counting the offering and formalizing a policy for accounts payable and other cash disbursements. We are also looking for church members interested in participating on the audit committee for 2018. The main task will be to select an independent auditor once we close the books for 2017. If you are interested in serving on this committee, please contact me at michelle@shutty.net Finally, the committee is seeking someone with an insurance background to review the church s current insurance policies and recommend and changes to coverage. If you have this experience and would be willing to help, please contact me at the email address above. Thank you, Michelle Shutty Financial Summary (as of June 30, 2017) Year to date income: $131,789 Year to date expenses: $125,730 Year to date net income: $6,059 Year to date expenses as a percent of annual budget: 49% Checking/Money Market Balance: $102,810 Mission Investment Fund: $ 20,080 Total Cash Balance $122,890 Mortgage balance: $164,772
