I Can Statements - 2nd Quarter Assessment: Southwest Asia, For the test, make sure you know the following information. The Ancient Civilization information can also be located in your guided readings, previous study guides, activity worksheets, and assessments. Name: Date Due: Hour: 1. I know about the city of Babylon and why it was important to Mesopotamia. (Ancient Civilization History Book, pages 42-46, Geo book pages 444-445) Babylon was the center of the Babylonian empire. It s location made it a crossroads of trade making it a very rich city. 2. I know about the Phoenicians, their accomplishments, and contributions. (Ancient Civilization History Book, pages 52-54, Geo book page 478) The Phoenicians were masters of trade, selling dyes and dense cedar wood. Using ships, they sailed the Mediterranean Sea to spread their trade and expand civilization. The Phoenicians developed a simple alphabet with just 22 symbols making it easy to learn. 3. I know the location and physical geography of Mesopotamia and why civilization began there. (Ancient Civilization History Book, pages 33-39, Geo book pages 444-445) Mesopotamia was located in an area called the Fertile Crescent between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. The rivers created areas of flat rich farmland. People in the Middle East tended to settle in river valleys or near an oasis. It is East of the Mediterranean sea and Northwest of the Persian Gulf. It has areas of flat, fertile land.

4. I know about the development of writing systems in Southwest Asia, and which writing system helped more people learn to read and write. (Ancient Civilization History Book, pages, 49-51 and page 54, Geo book page 445) The Mesopotamians developed a system of writing called cuneiform which is a combination of symbols to make groups of wedges and lines. 5. I can explain the contributions of Hammurabi. (Ancient Civilization History Book, pages 47-49, Geo book page 461) Hammurabi s code was the first organized listing of laws. The laws tended to have an equal punishment to fit the crime. An eye for an eye approach. 6. I know the Five Pillars of Islam. (3 Religion Notes & Video, Geo book page 447) 1. Declaration of faith proclaiming belief in one God and Muhammed is his messenger 2. Prayer facing Mecca and reciting prayers five times a day 3. Almsgiving giving charity 4. Fasting not eating or drinking during the day during Ramadan 5. Pilgrimage making the hajj to Mecca once in a lifetime 7. I know the origin, founder, and basic beliefs of all three monotheistic religions. (3 Religion Notes & Video, Geo book use index) Judaism Christianity Islam Date Established 2000 BCE 1 CE 600 CE Founder Abraham Jesus Muhammed Holy Cities Jerusalem Jerusalem Jerusalem, Mecca

Supreme Being Yahweh God Allah (Title) Holy Text Torah Bible Quran Places of worship Synagogue Church Mosque 8 I understand why water is so important to the Middle East. (Geo book pages 474-475) Water is a valuable natural resource crucial for drinking and irrigation. Its value has led to many conflicts in the region. Some countries attempt to take salt out of ocean water, a process known as desalinization. 9. I can explain why Southwest Asia is often called the Middle East. It is the crossroads of Africa, Asia, and Europe making it a center of trade. 10. I can identify the source of current tensions between Arab and Jews. (Notes, Video Notes, Geo book 494-496) After WWII Jewish people were given Palestine as their homeland. Palestinians living there and other Arabs were not accepting of this. Violence and struggle continues there today as both sides claim the area as their home land and their holy land. 11. I can explain Hamas and its goals for the Palestinian people. (Geo book 490-491, 496) Hamas is the organization that represents the Palestinian people in dealing with Israel and the world.

12. I can identify what some countries have done to diversify their economic pursuits rather than relying on oil. (Geo book page 457) Bahrain and Dubai have become regional banking centers. 13. I know the difference between renewable and non-renewable resources. (Ch 9, P. 438-439, 49, 232-233; Oil Activity Notes & Worksheet) A renewable resource is one that can be replaced. Trees can be regrown making them renewable. Nonrenewable cannot be replaced. Oil took millions of years to form making it nonrenewable. 14. I can identify the impact of Middle East oil on the region s relationship with countries in the Middle East and the relationship with the rest of the world. (Oil Activity Worksheet) Many countries, including the United States, strive to keep a good relationship with oil producing countries to have access to their oil. Oil producing countries can impact world economy through their oil prices giving them much influence in world events. 15. I can identify the current top oil- consuming countries. (Oil Activity Worksheet) United States, China, and Japan 16. I can explain the effects of petroleum production and export on a country s standard of living. (Oil Activity Notes & Worksheet, Geo book pages 438 and 439) Countries with oil have a higher standard of living than those countries without oil reserves.

17. I know the meaning of OPEC and its global impact. (Oil Activity Notes & Worksheet, Geo book page 450) OPEC stands for Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries. Being a member of OPEC gives a country economic influence over the price of petroleum and political influence over countries which are oil dependent. 18. I can identify the location of the following countries and describe the current events that are taking place there. (CNN.com) Label the following countries on the map and shade them in. Iran, Syria, Iraq, Dubai (located in the United Arab Emirates, and Turkey) Country Iran 1 Event The leader of this country has opened up talks with the USA regarding peaceful relations and eliminating their nuclear weapons program Turkey 2 Iraq 3 Syria 4 This country is feeling economic stress due to the refugee problem due to a neighbor s civil war.
