Message From Rabbi Goldstein With the approach of the summer, I can look back with some clarity on my first year as Sha arey Ha-Yam s Rabbi. I truly feel privileged to partner with our lay leadership as we guide our Reform Jewish community into the future. And, I have a vision for our congregation that I ll share at the June board meeting, one that I believe is both optimistic and realistic. For now, I simply want to express my gratitude to our out-going president, Syble Bleiweis. Synagogue presidents sometimes get a reputation for either being too dictatorial or too passive. But in my four decades as a congregational rabbi, I know the formula that makes for a successful president: Using the word partnership as a mantra for all congregational relationships; Offering a vision for the future; Feeling energized by recognizing that each synagogue (and, by extension, each member) is part of a great Jewish story. Syble has incorporated all these qualities into her time as our president. We are deeply grateful. I look forward to seeing you on Friday evenings throughout the summer. When we join together to embrace our heritage through song, prayer, study and, yes, schmoozing at the oneg, we are given the gift of establishing an island in time called Shabbat. President s Message It s finally Spring. The cold weather is gone, it s not raining every day, the flowers are in bloom, and a new Executive Board has been chosen for Congregation Sha arey Ha-Yam. On behalf of the new Board, THANK YOU for your trust and support. We will do our best to keep our Congregation moving forward. Rather than worrying about the challenges we face, we will embrace the opportunities in front of us..the opportunity to increase our membership, the opportunity to secure our financial future, and the opportunity to find a home of our own. The 2017-18 Congregation year is a very special one for Sha arey Ha-Yam. It s our B nai Mitzvah! While the Executive Board and the Fundraising Committee are planning exciting celebratory events, I would like to ask each of you to recommit yourselves to our Congregation in spirit and deed. Sha arey Ha-Yam is a family, and while we do a decent job worshiping together, we need everyone to pitch in and help with the work of each of the Congregation s various committees. Over the course of the next several weeks, I will be in touch with each of you to find out which committee or activity you would like to participate in. I know that we all have busy schedules, health challenges, and family issues. I also know that for us to truly be successful and maximize all of the opportunities before us, we need to do this as a united team a Congregation a family. Finally, we are going to make an effort this year to be green. Unless absolutely necessary, none of our correspondence will be mailed. We are going to utilize email as much as possible, so please make certain that Cyndy Friedland has your correct email address. The few dollars we save for paper and ink may go toward something we need more. There will be exceptions to this like membership statements and yahrzeit reminders. It s going to be a busy and exciting year. I hope you are all looking forward to it as much as I am. L shalom, Helen Dues Reminder Notices for 2017 2018 membership dues will be emailed no later than June 30. The dues structure has not changed: $325.00 for singles and $650.00 for families (meaning 2 or more). Membership Let's all pitch in and help to grow our membership...we need everyone's help to grow our congregation..we all are congregants with a mission. Reach out to your unaffiliated friends, neighbors, family members...ask them to join our spiritual community. This is of up-most importance for us to move forward as a Jewish Community and to be known in the community at large. Without our members we do not have a community..let's do this and get new members!!! 2
