Soon the house where he was staying was so packed with visitors that there was no more room, even outside the door. While he was preaching God s word to them, four men arrived carrying a paralyzed man on a mat. They couldn t bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, so they dug a hole through the roof above his head. Then they lowered the man on his mat, right down in front of Jesus. Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralyzed man, My child, your sins are forgiven. But some of the teachers of religious law who were sitting there thought to themselves, What is he saying? This is blasphemy! Only God can forgive sins! Jesus knew immediately what they were thinking, so he asked them, Why do you question this in your hearts? Is it easier to say to the paralyzed man Your sins are forgiven, or Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk? So I will prove to you that the Son of Man has the authority on earth to forgive sins. Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man and said, Stand up, pick up your mat, and go home! Mark2:1-11NLT I believe like the people in Jesus days, people today are looking for miracles from God through Jesus. The four men who had a friend who was paralyzed believed that Jesus could heal him. What s also interesting is how Jesus was able to heal the man. Mark wrote that Jesus had seen the four men s faith and because of that Jesus was able to heal the paralyzed man. Pastor Darren Sarmiento This shows us that our faith in Jesus is what He is looking for, but understand it doesn t mean He will heal and take care of every problem or trial. What we are reading in the book of Mark is one, a blessing through healing by faith alone. Remember, this healing was unique because it was the faith of the four friends that the paralyzed man was blessed with being healed. What it shows is we can intercede on others behalf to pray and ask for healing if the Lord so chooses. Take note the paralyzed man was also forgiven of his sins. Here is where I believe Jesus had another motive for healing the paralyzed man. It had to do with the religious leaders and yet it is extended for all of us today. In the scripture passage the religious leaders were outraged at Jesus because not only did he heal the man but he also forgave him of his sins. That angered the leaders because it was blasphemy to God because only God could forgive sins. I like that it says Jesus knew what they were thinking. It reveals that Jesus knows what s in our hearts and we don t have to vocalize it for Him to know that. I want to convey to you that the bigger picture for Jesus coming to earth especially in this passage was that he came to give eternal life. If all Jesus wanted was to heal people, then he would have just healed the paralyzed man and moved on, but that was not the case. Jesus first said to the man, your sins are forgiven then He healed the man. The religious leaders IN THIS ISSUE: 1,2 Jesus Offers True Eternal Life 2,3 Announcements 4 Missional Opportunities 5 VIF Calendar 6 Sermon Notes continued on next page

Jesus Offers True Eternal Life Pastor Darren Sarmiento were not as concerned about the healing as much as they were concerned about forgiving sins because only God could forgive sins. Now, here is what I really want to share with you about this passage. God can do anything. He can forgive sins and He can heal. Jesus spoke to the religious leaders and basically said (paraphrasing) Which is easier, to forgive sins or to heal? What Jesus then did was mind blowing. Jesus has the authority to forgive sins because he could heal the paralyzed man and He did! He revealed that He is God because He could heal and so proved He has the authority to forgive sins. John 1:1 says, In the beginning was the Word; and the Word was with God; and the Word was God. Not only was Jesus the Son of God but He is God as well. Even as Jesus is God in the Spirit, He is still Jesus in the flesh, and in the flesh, He offers forgiveness of our sins when He went to the cross for the world. I have written about healing because sometimes we focus on just being healed and we go on living life how we want to. Jesus came to earth to die for us, to offer forgiveness of our sins by His blood. He offered healing to people not to do it just for its own sake but He did it to get people s attention so that He could give salvation. Choose Your Passion (Part Four of Four) Pastor Darren Sarmiento Matthew 28:18-20 NLT Jesus came and told his disciples, I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age. 1. The choice to disciple others from our relationship with Jesus. 2. Our primary purpose is to come the one we are to disciple and build into his or her life. 3. The that the one we disciple also will eventually disciple others. The question is how can we do this?
