Giving Thanks to God And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him (Colossians 3:17). We come, once again, to the day that our nation sets aside to offer thanks. Even though we know that the one day of Thanksgiving will be followed by days of spending black Friday, small business Saturday, cyber-monday, giving-tuesday still, even in our secular world, we turn our attention to gratitude. This is also a wonderful time to pause in our ministry and to give thanks. Our yearly programs are underway and we now begin to see the first fruits of so much preparation, seed-planting and hard work. So give yourself time to pause in the coming weeks and to gaze with gratitude on your programs, participants, parish, and all the people whose lives intersect with your ministry. Reviewing our work with gratitude is vital, because we want to see God s work, we want to have God s heart in our ministry. It is not enough to examine and evaluate our own efforts. Beginning with gratitude establishes the right relationship. We are not the source of blessings, nor are we the producers of the fruits we witness. In giving thanks, we acknowledge God as source and producer and giver of all good gifts. While we pause to give thanks, let s not think only of what is pleasant, gratifying, abundant, beautiful, and affirming. Let us give thanks too for our disappointments and struggles, for the hardships and crosses we bear. In the face of these too, we give thanks. We give thanks to God always for all of you, remembering you in our prayers, unceasingly calling to mind your work of faith and labor of love and endurance in hope (I Thess 1:2-3) Happy Thanksgiving from Gary & Jennifer! Office of Catechesis and Youth Ministry News First Reconciliation Certificates? In many parishes, First Reconciliation is celebrated in the Fall or during Advent. We introduce children, and often re-introduce their parents, to this wonderful sacrament of mercy, forgiveness and healing. While we take care to prepare young people for Penance before their First Communion, we should remember that this is not a step in the sacraments of initiation, and that Reconciliation does not simply mirror the celebration of other sacraments. One of the differences is that we do not record Reconciliation in a sacramental register, nor should we issue certificates. Barbara Anne Cusack, Chancellor of the Archdiocese, explains: https://sg-mktg.com/mtuxmtmwmtc0oxx0qu9fn0zibc1rueqyahzhoevhztvxv3dfbwnrcwr1ds14x0rvb1lrt0r5v2dsog95mw5unehuuw 2/10

Any documentation for the sacrament of First Reconciliation is to be a temporary record of preparation for the sacrament. Permanent records are not to be maintained and certificates are not issued for First Reconciliation. The reason certificates are not issued is related to the seal of confession. While a person may enter the reconciliation room, the only person who could testify that he offered absolution is the priest confessor; he is forbidden from revealing not only the contents of any confession but also the fact that the sacrament was received by any individual. So, even though we may be used to marking special occasions with certificates, and even though publishers offer keepsake certificates, this is one sacrament where our practice should be different and not be accompanied by the giving of a certificate. Animated Movie, The Star? NCCL, in collaboration with the FCH has created a family catholic curriculum for Sony s animated movie The Star, which was released on November 17th. These family lessons offer catechetical and pastoral leaders, and families, new and varied ways to explore the Christmas story. Six themes were extracted from the movie, The Star, to encourage faith sharing and compiled into one curriculum. The themes include The Christmas Story, Divine Providence, Friendship, Prayer, Las Posadas, and Vocation. Each theme includes four sections: PRAYER, LEARN, REFLECT and ACT. The movie is heartwarming and hopeful, and will be loved by audiences for years to come. Help spread some Christmas cheer! Go see The Star and then explore our Catholic faith through the curriculum provided by this NCCL/FCH/Sony collaboration. Bear witness to the greatest story ever told... Jesus Christ is born. All lessons are on the movie s website and on nccl.org in both English and Spanish.
