He created a system with three different types of groups called Societies, Classes, and Bands. At this time the Methodist movement was a renewal movement of the Anglican church, of which John Wesley was a pastor until his death. A society was a group that met to study and share. It would take a offering for the poor and they would have a message and maybe a meal together. They functioned, in many ways like a congregation. The Society would be made up of a series of Classes. These were groups of 10 to 12 people that would meet each week and share together about their faith and living it out in the world. They were very much like what we would term today an accountability group. They would ask each other things like, How is it today with your Immortal soul? and you would answer. They kept each other s secrets, encouraged, and challenged as the situations warranted. If you wanted to go deeper, they had the groups called Bands that would be made up of 5 or 6 people all of the same gender that would meet weekly and delve even deeper into spiritual things. This was primarily a movement lead by non-clergy or laity. They would share a weekly message and they would celebrate the Sacraments of Communion or Baptism when a clergy would be present. These Circuit riding clergy were few and far between, so their arrival was a very exciting thing for these groups of Christian neighbors and friends. Through the 1700 s John Wesley sent missionaries over to the Colonies to encourage their spiritual growth in grace as a part of the Anglican Church. Societies and were formed and the movement grew. In 1784, after the American Revolution, John Wesley founded the Methodist Episcopal Church at the Christmas Conference in Baltimore. Francis Asbury and Thomas Coke Mike s Page were consecrated our first Bishops, and the church began to grow under their leadership. The same general patterns continued from the early days of the Methodist Episcopal Church. A group would start to meet at a house or a public building and they would form a Society. As the society grew they would break into classes. When the society grew to a certain point they would form a church, buy or build a building, and be made a part of a circuit. There is no record of when Methodists started meeting, but they did meet and a church was built in the Shreve area in 1856. At that time Shreve was known as Clinton Station, and we were part of the Nashville circuit of churches. In 1869 the Shreve Circuit was formed including the churches of Shreve, Newkirk, and Bigelow. Our second church was built in 1871, and the third church, the old sanctuary was built in 1906 and dedicated in 1906. An education and Fellowship Hall addition was added in 1956. A second story was put on the building (the office, and choir area) in 1962. In 1974 the Newkirk United Methodist Church merged with Shreve and in 1981 the Maple Grove United Methodist Church merged with Shreve. In 2003 the New addition was built including the new sanctuary, fellowship Hall and classroom space, and in 2011 the Activity Center was built. It is important to remember where you have been and to celebrate God s great faithfulness through all the generations. It is also important to look to prayerfully seek what God has in store next to touch His world. Please pray about our next steps in the church. I would love to see some new small groups form and for us to begin the process of seeking what our Mission and Vision for the future will be. I would encourage you to take part in one of the many educational opportunities in the life of the church. It can be Sunday School or one of the special classes or small groups. Welcome to the music ministry section of the newsletter. In this introductory article you will find information regarding upcoming events with the music ministry, as well as other music related information. First, let me thank those of you who were able to come to our first annual choir retreat! We had 10 members in attendance, and look forward to several others joining us when rehearsals begin. A special thanks to Jody Wells and the hospitality team who provided us with a great lunch to get us started. We listened and read through the anthems for the fall, as well as the Christmas cantata. It s going to be a great season with great music and profound texts. Please consider joining us if you are looking for a ministry in which to serve. Next, let me explain just a bit about the title of this music section of the newsletter. The word, Selah, is used 71 times in the book of Psalms, and 3 times in Habakkuk. There is a great deal of uncertainty about the meaning of selah. Most versions of the Bible do not attempt to translate selah but simply transliterate the word straight from the Hebrew. Well-meaning Bible scholars disagree on the definition of selah and on its root word, but since God has ordained that it be included in His Word, we should make an effort to find out, as best we can, the meaning. Selah is also thought to be rendered from two Hebrew words: s_lah, to praise ; and s_lal, to lift up. Another commentator believes it comes from salah, to pause. From salah comes the belief that selah is a musical notation signifying a rest to the singers and/or instrumentalists who performed the psalms. If this is true, then each time selah appears in a psalm, the musicians paused, perhaps to take a breath, to sing a cappella, or to let the instruments play alone. Perhaps they were pausing to praise the One about whom the song was speaking, perhaps even lifting their hands in worship. This theory would encompass all these meanings praise, lift up, and pause. When we consider the three verses in Habakkuk, we also see how selah could mean to pause and praise. Habakkuk s prayer in chapter 3 inspires the reader to pause and praise God for His mercy, power, sustaining grace, and sufficiency. Perhaps the best way to think of selah is a combination of all these meanings. The Amplified Bible adds pause and calmly think about that to each verse where selah appears. When we see the word selah in a psalm or in Habakkuk 3, we should pause to carefully weigh the meaning of what we have just read or heard, lifting up our hearts in praise to God for His great truths. Lay Leadership (Nominations) The Lay Leadership Committee has been prayerfully inviting folks into leadership positions in the life of the Shreve church. In the committee structure, our church works on a three-year cycles, and so people are always rotating on and off positions of leadership, so there is always a need for new people to give of their time and talents to serve. This is always a prayerful time of discernment for us, but we value your help and input. If you have a heart for a particular committee or area of service, please let me or one of the other committee members know. New Member Class If you have been thinking of joining the church, or would like more information about what that means, I will be having an information meeting during the Sunday School time on November 4 th. There will be no obligation to join, but you will learn about the church and about the membership class and be invited to be a part of the next 3-4 weeks. The class will take place during the Sunday School time and will last 4-5 weeks total. I would love to talk to you about this and hope you will prayerfully consider taking this step of faith. Rev. Mike Hospitals or Pastoral Visits If you are going into the hospital, or are in need of a pastoral visit, please give me a call. Rev. Rinehart has been assisting me in this area and he has been such a blessing as he has brought communion and Christ s love to many of our shut inns. We want to be there for you in your time of need, so please keep us informed of how we can best serve you. Thanks in advance for your help in this area. Rev. Mike Three Church Goals for 2018 The Administrative Council met in March and decided to set three goals for the rest of this year. The goals are still being hashed out, but they focus on Discipleship, Outreach, and Youth and Children. Under the area of Discipleship, we are hoping to start some more small groups, short term classes, and work on training in faith sharing. In Outreach we are hoping to find ways to better engage the Shreve Community, hopefully through the schools and more intentional use of the Activity center. The last is to focus on Youth and Children. We need to have more support and volunteers to grow this important ministry and to support Dana and her leadership. Please know that we will take seriously our ministry to and with adults, at the same time we put extra focus on Children and Youth. Please prayerfully consider how you can come beside us, as we look toward the future.
I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for the warm welcome that you have given me as I have joined the family here at Shreve UMC. I am excited to work with the staff as well as all of the volunteers in the various ensembles, and am anxious to get started in rehearsals. Speaking of rehearsals, I d like to let you know about rehearsal %mes for each of those ensembles. Chancel Choir Wednesdays, 7:00-8:15 p.m., beginning August 29 th. Adult Handbells Sundays, 8:15-9:15 a.m., beginning September 16 th. The schedule for Children s Choir and Children s Bell Choir have not been finalized as of yet, but we will let you know when those will take place. Please prayerfully consider joining one or both of these groups! Finances I want to thank all those who have faithfully given to support the church this summer. Because of your commitment and generosity, we have stayed above our expenses and that is a wonderful thing to celebrate. Our overall giving is significantly below the amount needed for our budget and it is way below what has come into the three funds at this point last year. If you have been away this summer and would consider trying to share a little extra for the weeks you were gone, I know your generosity would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again for all you do to support us in ministry here at Shreve UMC. Charge Conference Our Charge Conference this year is November 11 th, at the Wooster UMC. It will be at 2:00. All those who serve on Church Council are expected to be there to vote and everyone in the church is invited to come and be a part of this once a year business session. Please consider coming and put this on your calendar early to save the date. Prayer for the 2019 General Conference There will be a time of prayer for the 2019 General Conference held here on Saturday October 13 th at 10:00. We will open with a time of devotion and then have a time of guided prayer. This is sponsored by the East Ohio Evangelical Association and they are working on having locations in all 10 districts. Please consider coming to be a part of this event, and if your health allows, prayerfully consider fasting on that morning before we come together to pray. WCA Global Gathering The Wesleyan Covenant Association will be having a Global Gathering on November 3 rd, 2018 in Marietta, Georgia. This year we will be a simulcast site for this special event. It goes from 9-3 on that Saturday and a lunch and snacks will be included with your registration. The cost for registration is $50 and you can register online at https://wesleyancovenant.org/. If the cost is an issue, please talk to pastor Mike. Please consider being a part of this special event. Emmaus Walks There will be a Men s and Women s Emmaus walk this coming October and it is not too late to consider being a part of one of these special weekends. Emmaus is a three-day spiritual retreat that is sponsored by the Upper Room of the United Methodist Church. During these three days, you will hear 15 talks about living out your life in faith. Five of the talks will be about grace and will be given by clergy and 10 of the talks will be given by laypeople. There is singing and communion, and all kinds of fun along the way as you grow together in knowledge and grace. The next two walks of the Western Reserve Community will be held in October at Camp Asbury. The Women s Walk will be October 4-7 th and registration deadline is September 22 nd. The Men s Walk will be October 25-28 th and the registrations deadline is October 13th. To go on a Walk, you need to be sponsored, so if you are interested, please talk to Rev. Mike, Holly Grant, or one of the other folks who have been on a walk. You can find out more information online at www.wrecommunity.org. These are wonderful life-changing weekends for many, and I encourage you to pray about whether God may be nudging you to step out in faith in this special way.
Youth Sunday The Youth will be leading the Service on the 5 th Sunday of September (Sept 30th). They will be planning the service and be active in every part of it, including sharing the message. It is a wonderful thing to have our children and youth learning the importance of not only coming to church, but learning to serve as leaders. Please come and show them your support and then stay afterwards for the Rally Day Ministry Fair. Rally Day - Ministry Fair 11:45 Sept 30th We will be having a Rally Day (Ministry Fair) event here at the church on Sunday September 30th. It is our hope to give everyone a chance to see and consider being a part of the many wonderful ministries that take place here at the Shreve UMC. We are asking each group to decorate a table and consider having information and maybe a sign-up sheet to allow people to be a part of your ministry. These can be anything from Adult Sunday School classes to groups and ministries like the Scouts, AA, and TCE that we support. Dana has been giving leadership to this, so if she hasn t had a chance to talk to you, please see her about claiming a table for the group you represent. This is a very active church, and it would be great to have all the groups represented and to have all of our folks plan to stay for a few minutes after church to hear about what God is doing among us. Wednesday Night Bible Study We will be continuing with the Book of Luke on Wednesday nights at 6:30. We are still very early in the book and it is a great time to jump in. This study is open to anyone who would like to attend and we are still close to the beginning of this wonderful Gospel, so it is a great time to start attending. No prior Bible knowledge is required, just a desire to grow together in the knowledge and love of the Lord. There are a couple of weeks we may be off, because of Annual Conference and the Mission trip, so please call if you have any questions about whether we are meeting. If you have any other question, please see Rev. Mike. Soul Keeping- John Ortberg September 23 The Open Door Sunday School class will be doing the Mayberry Bible Study through September 16 th. We will be starting a 6 week class by John Ortberg called Soul Keeping on September 23 rd. In this six-session, video-based small group Bible study, Ortberg shows that caring for your soul is necessary for your Christian life. John shows participants what your soul is, why it is important, how to assess your soul s health, and how to care for it so that we can have a meaningful and beautiful life with God and others. When you nurture your soul your life in this world will come to make sense again; you can find your way back to God from hopelessness, depression, relationship struggles, and a lack of fulfillment. Your soul s resting place is in God, and John Ortberg wants to take participants to that home. I will have a sign-up sheet in class and in the Narthex. Please sign up by September 9 th, so I can purchase books for the class.
