T h e S p i r e OCTOBER 2016 The Great Why of Church Jesus cannot be accused of not knowing his purpose. In Luke 4, Jesus declares, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord s favor. To his hearers, these words provoke the image of Jubilee when all is restored as it should be, debts are cancelled and slaves set free. It is a renewal of Israel life back in proper balance made possible by God. The gospel of Luke draws on the Old Testament image of bringing all exiles (and people) back home in God. Jesus great why of his life is to restore this Jubilee and invite people through faith to live in the home of God s reign. Think of the great parables and themes of Luke: the prodigal son, Good Samaritan, and his emphasis on prayer and sinners, outcast, and women included. Jesus knew his why and lived it. In John, the first great miracle is of new wine at the wedding feast. This wine is surprisingly better than what has come before. There is an emphasis of abundant life that is not an amount of life but a reality of life in Jesus. We see the images of abiding in Jesus as he is the bread of life as he also offers everlasting water. Jesus speaks of a community that loves one another, washes feet as he washes their feet and loves them. Thus, Jesus has come to offer us life now that will last through eternity. This life is made possible by having life in him and leads us to being a new community of people in this world that loves as he loves. Jesus knew his why and lived it. Jesus in Mathew, Mark and Luke teaches on the kingdom of God more than any other topic. giving us eyes to see and ears to hear. This kingdom can be difficult to see so he uses parables. The kingdom of God is like a seed that grows into a great bush that we can nest in, like a pearl of great value that we will sell everything for, like a lost son returning home to his father s house, like a banquet where everyone off the streets is invited so God s house can be full. It s a place of mercy, love, peace and it s at hand, already present because Jesus is at hand, already present. In Luke 4:43, Jesus declares, I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God other cities also; for I was sent for this purpose. He sends his disciples out to proclaim the good news that the kingdom of Heaven has come near. The kingdom is an odd place by our standards because Jesus teaches, blessed are the poor in spirit, those who mourn, those who hunger and thirst for righteousness. Blessed are the meek, merciful, peacemakers and pure in heart. Jesus invites us to see God s reign and through following him live into this kingdom at hand. Jesus knew the why of his life and lived it. But do we? Do we know the why of our lives? Do we know the why of Church? Because Jesus calls us to follow, our why for church and our lives is the same as his. We are just to ask, How do we fit in? We often get too caught up in an assumed picture of the world as it is that we cannot see God s kingdom right before us. Can you see the reality Jesus is painting of the new wine, new life, and kingdom at hand? It s a place of neighborliness even among enemies. It s (Cont d on next page) C e n t e n a r y U n i t e d M e t h o d i s t C h u r c h E s t a b l i s h e d 1 8 6 7

Footsteps. It s a place that abides in Jesus, drinking his water, eating his bread for life. It s a place where we find our true home in the house of God s reign. Everyone is welcome. We love each other, wash feet because Jesus first loved us. It s Jubilee, Good News, that is breaking into this world because Christ is among us. The greatest is the one who serves. The weakest is vital to the whole. Dividing walls break down, peace becomes possible. The great news for us is that Jesus has already taken care of the big picture. For us, our why may best be seen in the small things as we seek to live in the picture Jesus provides. Have we learned the practices of forgiveness, neighborliness, and peace? Are we daily engaging each other and those in this world as if this kingdom of God truly is at hand? Are we letting Jesus why and the picture he paints of the world shape our existence. As a church, are we inviting people to taste this reality in God s reign because we are ordering ourselves around this reign? It is easy to lose sight, to be blinded by other things that demand our attention. In the story of Pentecost, the church is a people of vision and dreams. Do the work to let your eyes see the picture of what God is doing, the picture of salvation. This is where we find our life both as individuals and the church. Let us also be courageous enough to let Jesus and his vision lead us. Thank you for being the church at Centenary UMC. Rev. Danny Walker On October 29th, at 3:00PM, we will have our annual Trunk or Treat party! This year we are emphasizing inviting the community. Our event will have bounce houses, caramel apples, a soup dinner, a hayride, costume parade and trunk or treating. So if you have friends or neighbors with children, be sure to spread the word! Nicole Jackson ~ Children s Ministries Coordinator historian = a student or writer of history; compiler of a chronicle We need someone to serve as Church Historian. If you are interested in doing this, please talk to Pastor Danny or call the church office at 812-867-3920. When Sharon Hollon agreed to teach a sewing class, she had no idea of the response she would receive! After one class, the group outgrew the room they were in and will be moving to the church itself, most likely utilizing the Upper Room. If you are interested in learning how to use that sewing machine that sits gathering dust in some closet, call Sharon at 812-459-2643. We re happy to tell you that John Gore is now at home. CHOIR NOTES I wanted to give you a few ideas to maybe help us get our anthems and Christmas music (yes, Christmas music), cantata and anthems for the season on our calendars. On Wednesday night, October 12th, at 7:00 PM, we will start on our new cantata, Breath of Heaven at 7:00PM for a half hour - 45 minutes. We then will work on anthems for the Sunday services and try to finish by 8:30-8:45PM. I hope we can have some Sunday cantata practices. I don t yet know when that will be, but I promise to let you know soon. Come practice with us! You don t have to commit to regular Sunday anthems if you only want to sing the cantata! My phone is 812-867-3053; call me with any ideas or concerns! Thanks! Miriam Siebert, Choir Director Bible Study Begins October 3 with Luke 9 A new Bible Study on the last half of Luke s Gospel begins October 3 and continue Monday nights 6:30-7:30 PM through November (except Oct. 31 & Nov. 14). Led by Rev. All are welcome to join this 7-week study. On Saturday, October 15th, there will be a Barnes & Noble Bookfair supporting the United Methodist Youth Home with a percentage of net sales being donated to them. Please pick up a voucher in the Narthex and present it before checking out. Please spread the word to others, as this is an easy way to bless this ministry.
