The Hope Reporter Hope Lutheran Church 321.242.1610 hopebrevard.org Sunday Worship w/ Children s Church 9:30 AM Sunday School For All Ages 10:45 AM Discipleship March 2015 This Lent at Hope, we are focusing on the concept of discipleship. At first glance, that may not sound very Lutheran! After all, it wasn t until Dietrich Bonhoeffer s Cost of Discipleship that the concept got much attention in our faith tradition. Or was it? Not surprisingly, Luther DID speak about discipleship. It appears there are three major emphasis according to Dr. Robert Kolb (who just so happened to baptize my son Ethan): The first element of Luther s understanding of discipleship focused on the communicating God and the trust that defines human life by defining him as the source of all good and a refuge in every time of need the ultimate source of our core sense of identity, security, and meaning. In other words: Discipleship is living a life with God as our core and source - where He is glorified! This may sound like the First Commandment repackaged, but think about how YOUR life measures up to this first emphasis. The second element of Luther s understanding of discipleship stems from his placement of repentance being turned from false gods to Jesus Christ at the heart of daily Christian living. In other words: Daily (heck, hourly!) we are to know our sin, repent and turn to the healing forgiveness of the Father through the Son. In YOUR life, do you know your sin? Do you know how to admit it and how to give it to God? A third element in Luther s understanding of faithful hearing and following in Christ s footsteps emerged from his supplanting of the medieval exaltation of sacred activities and the entire religious realm over the profane, the everyday. In other words: God is to be glorified in all aspects of your life; therefore being a good and faithful father or worker is just as valuable as going to church and praying! Both are needed and give glory to God, but in YOUR life, do your priorities and daily activities reflect a close walk with God? This may seem heavy (you can read the full lecture of Dr. Kolb at concordiatheology.org) but this month welcomes deep reflection and a closer walk with God! In Christ, Pastor Moreno

LWML Rally at Hope in March Save the date: Hope is hosting our first LWML Rally Saturday, March 7. We will need help setting up on Friday, March 6 and hosting on March 7. Contact Dorothee Jones to see how you can help us plan and serve. Our theme is Taste and See. Womens Small Group : Wednesdays 10am 11:30am We invite you to join us at Hope Lutheran for a cup of tea or coffee as we discuss our next book, Prophecy. Small Groups are a wonderful, relaxing time to share our faith, God's Word, and to form deeper friendships. Come see for yourself! Contact Dorothee Jones to order a book or for more information. The study will last nine weeks. Prophecy examines Old Testament promises and the fulfillment of those promises in the New Testament, the School of Prophets, the end of the world, and much more. Optional: This study is part of the LifeLight Bible study series of in-depth studies of Bible books. The goal of LifeLight is that through a regular program of in-depth personal and group study of Scripture, more and more Christian adults may grow in their personal faith in Jesus Christ. Save the Date! Save the Dates! Mission Week 2015 is July 12 18. If you would like to be part of the planning, join us Monday, March 23, at 7pm in the Narthex. It s going to be another great week of service and outreach! Contact Dorothee Jones for more information.

Food Drive Habitat Lunch March 13 The college students will be coming back to our area to work for Habitat for Humanity! Hope is scheduled to serve them at a worksite on Friday, March 13. Please help out by indicating on the sign up sheet in the narthex that you will bring something or help to assemble and/or serve subs on the 13th. Many, many thanks for your help! Our congregation is joining other churches in Brevard in a "Faith Feeds Food Drive" during Lent. This is to bolster local food bank supplies which dropped perilously after Christmas. Our donations of food for "Food on the First" for March and April will be designated for this special food collection for Daily Bread and the South Brevard Sharing Center. The suggested list of canned goods includes soups/stews, vegetables, tuna/ chicken, Chef Boyardee products, peanut butter, and jelly as well as any other non-perishable food items. Your help is greatly appreciated. "For I was hungry and you fed Me." Matt. 25:35 Introducing: Dorothee Jones is our Church Administrator Starting March 1st, we celebrate a first at Hope: We have hired a church administrator! Starting in March going through November, Dorothee Jones will be serving to make Hope s mission and ministry even better. Please pray for her in this new role and support her work. With Pastor s upcoming mobilization, we knew this would be a great move. She will do basic jobs like the bulletin and newsletter, coordinate the guest pastors, run the church website and Facebook page, and much more! No doubt she will also need volunteers to accomplish any number of events! New Photo Directory Make sure to pick up the latest directory! A special thanks to photographer Sue Conant!
