Island in the Son UNITED METHODIST CHURCH CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS Timon s Ministries is one of the mission projects Island in the Son UMC supports regularly. Our November 6 Communion Offering will go to help Timon s, and our contributions will be matched by South Texas foundations on the 2016 Coastal Bend Day of Giving November 15. A Hand Up, NOT a Hand Out A Hand Up, NOT a Hand Out is the mantra of Timon s, which has served the Flour Bluff Community since 2000. Clients are predominately the working poor; only 19% are actually homeless. Timon s serves 80-100 hot meals six days a week, and its Crisis Pantry distributes 3-4 tons of groceries to the local community. Groceries are delivered to the elderly or infirm who cannot travel to the pantry. Timon s also provides laundry, showers, and a free clothing closet stocked by the community and staffed with volunteers. And each year Timon s offers backpacks and school supplies for Pre-K through 8th grade. Initially primarily a feeding station, Timon s has evolved into a day resource center with health services for all lowand no-income, non insured individuals. Volunteer dentists have treated more than 2,200 patients from throughout the Coastal Bend, and Timon s provides monthly eye care, new frames, and lenses free of charge to drug-free individuals. Financial assistance for medicines, ID s, birth certificates, and licensing is also offered. A volunteer family medicine MD maintains some 750 client charts. Because one third of the patients are pre-diabetic or have diabetes, Timon s secured a grant from Coastal Bend Diabetes Initiative to fund diabetes classes and better food choices in the dining room. A Methodist Healthcare Ministries grant funds medicines, medical and dental supplies, and eyewear. IITS volunteers serve the noon meal at Timon s on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and many of our Winter Texans participate while they are with us. The Rev. John Smith and IITS lay members serve communion there monthly. Timon s Ministries is a 501(c)3 tax-exempt charity funded by churches, individuals, grants and fundraisers. Please prayerfully consider giving to help Timon s on November 6. Betty Thomas, Worship Team
