Fernando R. reviewed the history of the founding of the temple and some of the families who were active then. It is wonderful to be continuing the efforts that they made. In addition we celebrated the 60 th wedding anniversary of Lewis and Dena Levine. Their daughter Suggie (Sheryl) was here from California, and presented the temple with a beautiful new Bimah cover and Torah cover for the high holidays from all the Levine children in honor of their parents. The temple thanks the Levine family very much for this beautiful gift. Coming up on July 10 will be our rummage sale on the temple s terrace at 8 am. There is still time to bring your unwanted items and put them to good use for the temple. Fernando R can pick up items that you can t bring. Please call Fernando at 970-4005 or me at 550-9530. And if you can help out on the 10 th that will be just as great. Don t miss the B nai Mitzvat of Susan Ander and Alma Russek on Saturday, July 30, and then the Bat Mitzvah of Melanie Goldstein on August 26 and 27. Following Melanie s Bat Mitzvah, on Saturday evening, we will have our 2 nd summer Island event with Havdalah services at the Weiss s Ramada Ltd on SPI. Rabbi Joseph will be in attendance. Stay over if you like and join a morning lesson with the rabbi. More details will follow. Please keep in mind when you wish to donate to the temple - the Gabbai Fund is our highest priority funding need at this time. Thank you Susan Hananel for producing an excellent Sim Shalom newsletter for our temple. N O T E S F R O M T H E G A B B A I Fernando Russek In commemoration of the 60th anniversary of our temple, we are putting together a TIME CAPSULE to be sealed and put away and be opened on the 75th anniversary. For this purpose we would like you to send me some mementos, pictures or letters that you think will portray a window in time to the Jews or Israel in the world or here in Harlingen in 2011 and or a letter about how do you think things will be in 2026. The time capsule will be closed on Sunday the 4th of September. So please take some time and send us some material. At the end of this month we will be joining on the celebration of the Bat Mitzvot of my lovely wife Alma Russek and our good friend Susan Ander. The road that my wife has gone from when we first meet to today has been beautiful. She is a strong hard working woman, ready to do whatever it takes or needed to accomplish her goals, for her barmithzva she has been studying and practicing and studying more, our whole family is so proud of you. To Alma and Susan congratulations! The Bar mitzvah of Ben Gonzalez was very nice, we all had a great time and Ben was cool & confident. We also want to congratulate one more time the Newman family for the Chanukah Habayit... the dedication of their new home that we attended last month. Chanukah Habayit (Home dedication) A House Blessing and Mezuzah hanging at the new home of Richard and Christine Newman. THE JEWISH MUSIC HOUR hosted by Rabbi Joseph from noon to 1 p.m. Sundays on KNON 89.3-FM in Dallas or online at http:// www.knon.org/ Honor someone in your family and help the Temple. We still have a few pews available for purchase and dedication. A plate will be installed in recognition of who you decide to honor. Your family name will become a part of our Temple for future generations

Written by an Israeli named Dan Sporn We overcame the armies of seven countries. Our condition, in Israel, has never been better than it is now! Only the television and the media make people think that the end of the World is near. Only 65 years ago, Jews were brought to death like sheep to slaughter. NO country, NO army. Only 60 years ago, seven Arab countries declared war on little Israel, the Jewish State, just a few hours after it was established We were 650,000 Jews against the rest of the Arab world. No IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) or Air Force. We were only a small group of stubborn people with nowhere to go. Remember: Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Egypt, Libya, and Saudi Arabia, they all attacked at once. The state that the United Nations "gave" us was 65% desert. We started it from zero. Only 41 years ago, we fought three of the strongest countries in the Middle East, and we crushed them in the Six Day War. Relax chevray (friends), we will overcome our current enemies. Never mind where you look in human history. Think about it, the Jewish nation, our condition has never been better than now. So let's lift our heads up and remember: Never mind which country or culture tries to harm us or erase us from the world. We will still exist and persevere. Egypt? Anyone know where the Egyptian empire disappeared to? The Greeks? Alexander Macedon? The Romans? Is anyone speaking Latin today? The Third Reich? Did anyone hear news from them lately? And look at us, the Bible nation from slavery in Egypt, we are still here, still speaking the same language. Exactly here, exactly now. Over the years we fought different coalitions of Arab countries with modern armies and with huge amounts of Russian-Soviet ammunition, and we still won. Today we have a beautiful country, a powerful Army, a strong Air Force, an adequate Navy and a thriving high tech industry. Intel, Microsoft, and IBM have all developed their businesses here. Our doctors have won important prizes in the medical development field. We turned the desert into a prosperous land. We sell oranges, flowers, and vegetables around the world. We launched our own satellite! Three satellites at once! We are in good company; together with the USA (280 million We overcame the Romans, We overcame the Spanish Inquisition, We overcame the Russians pogrom, We overcame Hitler, we overcame Germany and overcame the Holocaust, Maybe The Arabs don't know it yet, but we are an eternal nation. All the time that we will keep our identity, we will stay eternal. So, sorry that we are not worrying, complaining, crying, or fearing. Business here is beseder (fine). It can definitely be much better, but it is still fine. Don't pay attention to the nonsense in the media, They will not tell you about our festivals here in Israel or about the people that continue living, going out, meeting friends. Yes, sometimes morale is down, so what? This is only because we are mourning the dead while they are celebrating spilled blood. And this is the reason we will win after all. Please forward this e-mail to all of your Jewish friends everywhere in the world. You are all part of our force to keep our existence. This may help some of us lift our heads up and be proud to say: I AM A JEW
