[Next page:] HISTORIC SKETCH The First Wesleyan Methodist Church of Brewster and Dennis, was formed by act of the Massachusetts legislature, March 7, 1845. It was an outgrowth of the Reformed Methodist Society, organized in 1814. They had erected in 1821, a meetinghouse in West Brewster, called the Red Top, where they had worshipped until 1845. It was on May 3 rd, 1845, that Reformed group voted to unite with the Wesleyan Methodist Church of the locality, which then continued services for two years in the Red Top Meetinghouse. In 1847, the second meetinghouse was constructed. This was the church which stood until 1857 in the vicinity of what is now the church parking lot. To date, two of its members have gone into the ministry, being Rev. Nathan Chapman, and Rev. Lawrence Nyberg. On July 30 Aug. 6, 1939, the church celebrated its 125 th anniversary. The present structure, being dedicated today, is given as a memorial to Mrs. Mercie H. Sears, by a bequest of her daughter, Mrs. Sadie B. Keene. Construction began in Sept., 1956. The cornerstone was laid Nov. 4, 1956 The first religious service in the completed church, was held Nov. 3, 1957. Ministers who served the church between 1845 1890: Rev. Palmer Brown Rev. A. H.
