FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 7100 Harvard Hills Rd. P.O. Box 846 Harvard, IL. 60033 Church 815-943-4474 ww.fpcharvard.org SEPTEMBER 2018 A Note from the Pastor We have had several special events to celebrate this summer a fantastic Vacation Bible School, honoring of our 50 plus members and a 150 year anniversary party! And of course each Sunday is a special day as we offer our praise to God and celebrate what Jesus has done for us! I am concerned about some negativity that has seemed to surface recently in our church family. I know that each member works hard, giving all they can of their time and energy to make each project, event and service successful. But, we need to keep in mind the reason why we are doing these things - Everything we do should be done with kindness, toward each other as we are working together to bring glory to God. It is important to build each other up showing love and kindness in whatever we do. The Apostle Paul gives us good advice on living the Christian Life. In Philippians 2: 1-4 we read: If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like minded, having the same love, being one in Spirit and purpose. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. I ask you to give this your prayerful consideration as we remember how Jesus treated others and taught us to do likewise. The best way we can thank God is to do something good for someone else. Blessings,

7 POP TOP COLLECTION PROGRAM: Little things can make a big difference. You can help the Ronald McDonald House in Chicago by saving the little tabs you pull to open soda, soup, or other aluminum cans. The funds generated from recycling these aluminum gems help offset the House s expenses. McHenry County s Home Community Education Association which is part of the University of Illinois Extension has been collecting pop tabs for many years. Last year they delivered over 72# to the Ronald McDonald House in Chicago. You can help by bringing your tabs to the church and placing them in the box by the door of the work room. Thank you, Florence Spesard Food Pantry Work Day for September is the 25th If you can help please call Florence Spesard 943-6134 Do you know that you can light our Memorial Candle on Sunday in memory of a loved one? This is done prior to the beginning of worship. Just make arrangement with the office prior to the day you would like to do this. Give Janet a note stating who is lighting the candle and for whom. She will see that it gets placed on the screen announcements for that day. You are invited to place flowers in the Sanctuary in honor of or in memory of someone and have it printed on the screen. Just give Janet a call and give her the information.

11 2018 Rummage Sale Final Accounting: Thanks to everyone who donated items, helped set up, and work our annual church rummage sale. This project has become a big mission outreach to our town and surrounding areas. This year we made a profit of $2,975.04. The left over items were donated to Savers (Epilepsy Foundation) and we received $420.90 which is included in the profit figure. Please consider donating your time next year to help set up the rummage sale as this is where the most help is needed. Mary Joslyn Rummage Sale Chairwoman Trustees would like to thank the Christian Education Committee for their purchase of the new refrigerator in the kitchen. This was paid by Rummage Sale fundraiser funds. Our old refrigerator had several issues including stop cooling and expensive needed parts replacement and we were advised that it was well past it s life expectancy. Please make sure your take a look at the new refrigerator the next time you are in the fellowship hall and thank our Christian Education Committee. Your Trustees Brat Stand Accounting: The Mission Outreach Committee wishes to thank everyone who participated in this year s Harvard Milk Day Brat Stand. The weather was good and we had a fun time working together. We received a net profit of $2,204.14 which has been donated to the church general fund. A special thanks to Deans Foods for donating milk for our stand again. Mary Joslyn Herman Lucy Brat Stand Co-Chairs Mission Outreach Committee
