Father Edwin F. Kelley Assembly #1443 April May 2013 Fourth Degree - Knights of Columbus NEXT MEETINGS: 22 Apr & 25 May Virginia District - Calvert Province Woodbridge, Virginia 22194-0232 The Navigator s Report Faithful Navigator Jim Casey Sir Knights, Here it is April and I expected to see Cherry Blossoms in DC in all their glory. Not so fast buster, Ol Man Winter is just now packing his bags since he missed his mid-march flight. With any luck, we ll have a slightly delayed Spring and not find ourselves sent directly to Summer and its heat and humidity. If we still lived in Hawaii this wouldn t be a problem. Just another day in Paradise. For those who were able to take part in our Family Bowling Night, a hearty Thank You! Everyone I saw seemed to be having a grand time, especially the kids who were using the special equipment to ensure a good hit. Or maybe it was the adults who seem to enjoy just watching the little ones having so much fun. It s been a long time since I rolled a 220 and I m really looking forward to trying it again next year. After a bit of delay our Renewal of Obligation Ceremony went off without a hitch thanks to our Worthy Associate Marshal (and Fr. Kelley Sir Knight) Guillermo Giandoni. Thank you Guillermo and all who took part. We have a number of service opportunities coming up and I won t bore you by repeating what s on the calendar or requested by our Faithful Captain and Faithful Admiral. What I will do is pass on a bit of information that some of our ladies have inquired about. Why the different colored capes and chapeau? Well, here s why: Basic Fourth Degree Color Corps Member Red Cape, White Chapeau, Black handled Sword Navigator and Past Faithful Navigators White Cape, White Chapeau, White handled Sword Commander Purple Cape, Purple Chapeau District Marshal and Associate Marshals Green Cape, Green Chapeau Master and Former Masters Gold Cape, Gold Chapeau, Gold handled Sword Vice Supreme Master and Former Vice Supreme Masters Light Blue Cape, Light Blue Chapeau, Gold handled Sword Supreme Master Dark Blue Cape, Dark Blue Chapeau, Gold handled Sword THANKS to ALL for YOUR support Vivat Jesus

The Friar s Corner By Fr. Michael Duesterhaus My Dear Brother Knights, As we enjoy the glory that is Easter, I reflect on the passing of time and the passing of friends. Many of you have been involved in the ceremonies around the passing of a loved one, so I wanted to share with you the story of a committed man who answered a call to serve. Vivat Jesus! Fr. Duesterhaus Bagpipes for a funeral As a bagpiper, I play many gigs. Recently I was asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man. He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper's cemetery in the Kentucky backcountry. As I was not familiar with the backwoods, I got lost and, being a typical man, I didn't stop for directions. I finally arrived an hour late and saw the funeral guy had evidently gone and the hearse was nowhere in sight. There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch. I felt badly and apologized to the men for being late. I went to the side of the grave and looked down and the vault lid was already in place. I didn't know what else to do, so I started to play. The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around. I played out my heart and soul for this man with no family and no friends. I played like I've never played before for this homeless man. And as I played 'Amazing Grace,' the workers began to weep. They wept, I wept, we all wept together. When I finished I packed up my bagpipes and started for my car. Though my head hung low, my heart was full. As I opened the door to my car, I heard one of the workers say, "I never seen nothin' like that before and I've been putting in septic tanks for twenty years." Apparently I'm still lost... it's a man thing Summer Kickoff Picnic By FN Jim Casey The Summer Kickoff Picnic is Saturday, 25 May, 1 4 PM at Fr. Kelly Council Hall. You are all invited. There will be plenty of fun filled activities for adults and the children that day. The picnic is open to all family members and guests of the Assembly. As in the past, the Assembly will provide nonalcoholic beverages, meats (hot dogs/hamburgers), buns and condiments. All you need to bring is your appetite covered dish or salad. Like any event of this magnitude, help is needed to make this event a success. Need volunteers to help set-up, cook, and clean up. If you willing to help, contact one the following POCs; SK Marco Soave (703-477-9963/marco.soave@comcast.net), SK Charles Carroll (571-237- 0141/cmcbnc78@verizon.net), SK Phil Kennedy (703-585-9079/pkenn95798@comcast.net). For planning purposes, please RSVP your family head count as soon as possible to one of the POCs mentioned above no later than 23 May. Thank you. Vietnam Veterans Memorial Service Project Mark this date on your calendar: 29 June. It s the day the Assembly travels to the National Mall to clean the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. This humbling task provides us an opportunity to honor the U.S. service members who died and who were unaccounted for (Missing in Action) during the Vietnam War. Details about this special service project will be sent out to you by mid-may. Stay tuned!

Prayer for the Canonization of Father Michael J. McGivney God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest, Father Michael J. McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue may we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body, which is the Church. Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify your venerable servant Father Michael J. McGivney on earth according to the design of your holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present (make your request here). Through Christ our Lord. Amen. Our Father Hail Mary Glory be to the Father Please report all favors received: The Father McGivney Guild One Columbus Plaza New Haven, CT 06510-3326 Officer Elections Officer elections for the Assembly is Saturday, 25 May, 12:30 PM at Fr. Kelley Council Hall. The final ballot of officers will be read and voted upon. Support the election process by coming out and casting a vote for next year s officer. As soon as the election is completed, you and your family are cordially invited to participate in this year s Summer Kickoff Picnic. The Captain s Log By SK Marco Soave By prevailing over all obstacles and distractions, one may unfailingly arrive at his chosen goal or destination. Christopher Columbus. We have a few sensational social events planned for you and your family. Please mark your calendar with these important dates: 13 April Gettysburg Battlefield Tour and Picnic, 6:00 AM until??? 25 May Assembly Annual Summer Kickoff Picnic at Kelley Council Hall, 1-4 PM 29 June Vietnam Veteran s Memorial Wall Cleaning Project, 6-9 AM The February family-bowling event at Bowl American was a resounding success. Several SK s and their families participated and all had fun. Even FN Jim Casey and wife Lynn was having a tremendous time knocking down a few pins. Thank you for supporting this fun filled event. Our next major family event is our trip to tour the Gettysburg National Military Park on 13 April. SK Paul Severance once again is going to guide us through the entire 3-day battle scenario that took place July 1-3, 1863. If you need more information about the tour, contact SK Phil Kennedy. Another family event that we will need plenty of help is with the cleaning of the Vietnam Veteran s Memorial on 29 June. If you remember, this community service project is similar to our effort in cleaning the Korean War Memorial in October 2012. SK Phil Kennedy is the POC for this project and additional detailed information will be sent out to you NLT mid-may.

The Word from the Admiral By PFN Phil Kennedy Spring is here, at least by the calendar. Easter has come and gone and the spring Fourth Degree Exemplification is around the corner. Now s the time to start asking all those Third Degree Knights you know to join the Fourth Degree. I am sure the first question they will ask; why is it so important for me to join the fourth degree? Here is what you tell him: The Forth Degree Is responsible in educating its members and the world at large to defend our democratic institutions Continuously supports such religious, civic and charitable causes consistent with high values of the Order Opposes the institution and development of unfavorable forces that would impact our good Christian government Is the highest degree in the Knights of Columbus, giving a greater knowledge and appreciation of our Catholic heritage Permits its members in performing heroic deeds for God, for Country and for our Order Helps us apply our Christian principles in all levels of democratic government Allows us through our Catholic faith to promote patriotism When you have satisfied his curiosity; now invite him to join the fourth degree. The next opportunity to advance to the Fourth Degree is May 18, 2013 at Fairfax, VA. Do not delay; talk it up at your council meetings and submit your Form 4s to me as soon as possible.
