REFLECTIONS We who must die demand a miracle. How could the Eternal do a temporal act, The Infinite become a finite fact? Nothing can save us that is possible: We who must die demand a miracle. W. H. Auden from For the Time Being: a Christmas Oratorio John (the Baptist), the central figure of Advent, is the herald of the turn of the ages. He arrives announcing the opening event of the end-time. He is the herald of the age to come, as prophesied by Malachi at the very end of the Old Testament. It is the coming of the Lord that will lift the curse from the world. Flemming Rutledge from Advent, the Once and Future Coming of Jesus Christ Our lives are eschatologically stretched between the sneak preview of the new world being born among us in the church, and the old world where the principalities and powers are reluctant to give way. In the meantime, which is the only time the church has ever known, we live as those who know something about the fate of the world that the world does not know. And that makes us different. Will Willimon from Conversion in the Wesleyan Tradition

P R A I S E SCRIPTURE READING & LIGHTING OF THE THIRD ADVENT CANDLE: Malachi 3:1-4 Robert & Regina DeWitt CALL TO WORSHIP: based on 2 Thessalonians 1:9-12 Pastor: Come and hear the eternal Word. Come and know the Triune God. Come and respond to the gospel of Jesus Christ with humble faith. All: When the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, he will inflict vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. Pastor: When he comes on that day he will be glorified in his saints and marveled at among all who have believed the testimony about him. All: May God make us worthy of his calling and fulfill every resolve for good and every work of faith by his power. Pastor: May the name of our Lord Jesus be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ. Come, let us worship! HYMN OF PRAISE: 218 Angels, from the Realms of Glory 2 PRAYER OF PRAISE AND THE LORD'S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Give us this day our daily bread, For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever, Amen.

C O N F E S S I O N SCRIPTURE READING: Isaiah 40:1-8 1 2 Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that her warfare is ended, that her iniquity is pardoned, that she has received from the 3 Lord's hand double for all her sins. A voice cries: In the wilderness prepare the way of the 4 Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the 5 rough places a plain. And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it 6 together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken. A voice says, Cry! And I said, What 7 shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all its beauty is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades when the breath of the Lord blows on it; surely the people are 8 grass. The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever. Leader: All: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! CORPORATE CONFESSION OF SIN: Eternal and merciful God, you have loved us with a love beyond our understanding, and you have set us on paths of righteousness for your name's sake. Yet we have strayed from your way; we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, through what we have done and what we have left undone. As we remember the lavish gift of your grace symbolized in baptism, O God, we praise you and give you thanks that you forgive us yet again. Grant us now, we pray, the grace to die daily to sin, and to rise daily to new life in Christ, who lives and reigns with you, and in whose strong name we pray. Amen. SILENT REFLECTION AND CONFESSION WORDS OF ASSURANCE & PEACE OF GOD: from 1 Peter 1 & 2 Peter 3 Pastor: Lift your hearts and hear the good news of salvation. You were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers not with perishable things such as silver or gold, All: but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. Pastor: Now consider what sort of people you ought to be in lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming day of God. All: According to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. Pastor: As you wait for the Lord, may the peace of Christ be with you all. All: And also with you. HYMN: Our God Reigns (lyrics on page 6) 3

C O M M I T M E N T OFFERTORY PRAYER OFFERTORY Presentation of tithes & offerings DOXOLOGY (Hymnal, page 731) AFFIRMATION OF FAITH: The Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended to heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. There was a man sent from God, whose name was 7 John. He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through 8 15 him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light... (John bore witness about him, and cried out, This was he of whom I said, He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me. ) SERMON: He Dwelt Among Us: Star Witness Rev. Jeff Pate HYMN: 320 Rejoice, All Ye Believers C O M M U N I O N RESPONSIVE READING: Psalm 103:1-5; Revelation 5:12 Pastor: Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! All: Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, Pastor: who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's. All: Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!
