C The HRISTIAN FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH (Disciples of Christ) FCC to Host Fifth Annual Interfaith Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration and Celebration Program Offers Shared Hopes in a Time of Fear Members of Bloomington s faith community will gather at FCC on Sunday, January 7, 2018, at 4:00 pm for this special community event honoring the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. During the service, we will share expressions of hope in a time of fear that will be fastened together into a communal banner of hope. Please join us for this moving and important program honoring the work of Dr. King. The MLK Commemoration and Celebration is sponsored by St. Thomas Lutheran Church, the LDS community, Congregation Beth Shalom, St. Mark s United Methodist Church, Baha i community, Unitarian Universalist Church, and First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Christmas Eve at FCC Join us on Christmas Eve for one of several worship opportunities at FCC as we sing carols and light the Christ candle in preparation for the birth of Our Lord and Savior. At 5:30 p.m. we travel to Bethlehem, following the way of the prophets, holy family, shepherds and magi. This family-oriented service culminates in a candlelit, no-rehearsal, everybody-gets-a-part children s Nativity pageant. Special Music with the Sanctuary Choir and musical Inside This Issue guests begins at 7:30 p.m. Page 4: Sunday School Classes Christmas Eve concludes with a traditional candlelight service at 8:00 p.m., featuring lessons, carols, special choral music and communion. Page 6: January birthdays Page 7 : Holiday office hours and FCC Calendar of Events Volume 59, number 23 December 20, 2017

Page 2 PASTOR S PEN THOUGHTS ABOUT CHRISTMAS The Christian Visitor Due to the fact that the post office is very busy this time of year, by the time you are reading this article, Christmas Day may have already come and gone. However, Christmas Season (also called Christmastide) will have just begun! Some liturgical calendars say that Christmastide begins at sunset on Christmas Eve, while other contend that it begins Christmas Day, December 25. The season is a short one, ending on Epiphany, which we will celebrate this year on Sunday, January 7. It is a time to soak in the light of Christ and the joy that comes by knowing that Emmanuel (which means God with us) has come. I enjoy celebrating the Christmas Season by keeping the lights and decorations on, continuing to listen to Christmas carols, and enjoying a festive yet relaxed atmosphere. This year, Bruce and I will spend a few days of Christmas in Ohio with my daughter Allison and son-in-law Jared. My parents (who are being chauffeured from Virginia to Ohio by my nephew) will join us! Speaking of Christmas, every year, someone, referring to the word Xmas, says that we need to put the Christ into Christmas. In reality, the word Xmas is grounded in an ancient Christian tradition. X is the symbol for the Greek letter chi (pronounced kye), which is the first letter in Christ, or Christos in Greek. Keeping this in mind, perhaps the best way we can put the Christ in Christmas is when we proclaim Christ s power OVER those things that attempt to defeat hope, peace, joy and love in this world. Maybe putting Christ in Christmas should look something like this: Merry Xmas! See you in the New Year! Pastor Helen Racism

Vol. 59, no. 23 Page 3 CHRISTMAS EVE FESTIVAL CHORUS CONCERT 7:30 pm Benjamin Britten: A Ceremony of Carols (1942) Each Christmas Eve, before the Candlelight Communion Service, we have celebrated with a special concert of seasonal music that celebrates the great music inspired by the Christmas narrative. This year our musical offering will be from the well-beloved 20 th century setting of Medieval and Renaissance English carol poetry as set by the great British composer Benjamin Britten for chorus and harp: A Ceremony of Carols. The majority of the poems Britten chose are taken from The English Galaxy of Shorter Poems, and are in three separate old English dialects. Because of this, a translation will be provided for any words or phrases which might be unfamiliar to modern ears. However, though much of its language may be archaic, the beautiful settings for soloists, harp and chorus transcend any unfamiliarity. Over the past 75 years since its composition, the Ceremony of Carols has become one of the most performed and cherished compositions in the repertoire of music for the Christmas season. Join us on Friday, January 5 at 6:30 pm for Jazz Vespers: Light

Page 4 The Christian Visitor Find Your Place in Small Groups in 2018 Getting involved with a small group is a great way to increase your sense of belonging at First Christian Church. Our music program, our arts and crafts groups, book groups and MOPS group are some of the best examples of this. When people come together to do things they love or have a natural interest in learning, meaningful conversation is inevitable. Common interests and abilities may become apparent. Caring friendships become possible. Keep your eyes open for all the possibilities that arise in these areas, but don t forget about Sunday morning and weeknight study groups. Here are a couple of examples beginning in the new year: New Weeknight Class for Study and Discussion Jesus teaches the Kingdom of God is at hand not at the end times, the eschaton (Oxford Dictionary: The final event in the divine plan; the end of the world) but imminent. Jesus is the Messiah quite unexpected in the Jewish history of Messianic Expectations and continues to be for the Jewish people. J. Richard Middleton's book, A New Heaven and a New Earth, most likely will add significant insight to this critical issue of the age. Please join our weekly book study led by David Garshaw beginning Monday, January 8, 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. sharp in the Fireside Study. Great Time to Step into Sunday Morning Discussion Group Talking Faith meets weekly at 11:15 following worship (beginning January 7), and encourages discussions beyond weather or church events. Participants talk about their views on faith, using topics that ease them from interesting discussion to deep meaningful sharing. Along the way we get to know our fellow participants better. Led by Terry Daugherty, this group is flexible enough to change according to the needs of its participants. (Room 14, lower level) Contact the church office or Connie Myers, director of faith formation and family ministries, with questions about these or other opportunities. Parking Survey The City of Bloomington is conducting a survey to help them assess and address downtown parking. Please take a few minutes to complete it. There is a comment section at the end. This would be an appropriate place for you to lift up any concerns related to the downtown churches. Please go to this link and participate now: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/downtownbloomingtonparking

Vol. 59, no. 23 Page 5 Congratulations Janet Schell Janet Schell has supported the ministries of FCC with her time and talent for many years. So it came as no surprise to us when we heard that the city of Bloomington recognized Janet for her service in the community. Janet is a former teacher and certainly understands needs are great in the classroom today. The city recognized Janet s work at The Teacher s Warehouse with the Volunteer of the Week honor. She was also featured on WFHB radio, and a story and interview can be found on their website. The Teacher s Warehouse provides donated school supplies and books for teachers. Janet s work at The Teacher s Warehouse contributed to providing school supplies and books for 525 teachers and 7,000 students last school year. Thanks to the members of First Christian Church for "The Celebration of Life for Wayne F. Johnson," a member for over 50 years in Bloomington, Indiana. Helen did an outstanding job in greeting all our family, friends, and helping my adult children throughout the planning and during the Celebration service. Wayne II, Mary Jane, and Bill did an outstanding job and I was so-so-so proud of all three. Thank you to the very special women of the church who helped arrange GREAT HALL to look FESTIVE AND INVITING. Peggy Stafford, Kathy Street, Joan Breeden, Jo Weddle, Charlie and Lynn Sinn, plus others who helped. Also, thanks for all the sympathy cards received by me and Mary Jane. My new address is Naomi Johnson, The Enclave at Anthem, 42015 N. Venture Drive #132, ANTHEM, ARIZONA 85086. PHONE: 812-340-2031 EMAIL: naomi1928@gmail.com May all of you have a HAPPY AND HEALTHY CHRISTMAS AND A WONDERFUL NEW YEAR 2018. Naomi Johnson Christmas Special Day Offering Disciples Mission Fund Special Day Offerings provide an opportunity to highlight specific ministries as part of our faith celebrations. Support Regional Ministries through the Christmas Special Offering that will be received on December 17 and 24. Regional ministry knits the church together by equipping leaders, encouraging congregations, and building relationships. Often recognized for the ministries of camps and conferences, regions also play a critical role in the preparation and authorization of ministerial ordination. Both are key to church leadership and development.
