About Dr. Mohler The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary presents the 2019 Great Britain Tour. Dr. R. Albert Mohler Jr. will serve as leader and featured speaker. Dr. R. Albert Mohler Jr. is the president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary the flagship school of the Southern Baptist Convention and one of the largest seminaries in the world. He also serves as the Joseph Emerson Brown Professor of Christian Theology at Southern Seminary. Dr. Mohler has been recognized by such influential publications as Time and Christianity Today as a leader among American evangelicals. In fact, Time.com called him the reigning intellectual of the evangelical movement in the U.S. In addition to his presidential duties, Dr. Mohler hosts two programs: The Briefing, a daily analysis of news and events from a Christian worldview; and Thinking in Public, a series of conversations with the day s leading thinkers. He also writes a popular blog and a regular commentary on moral, cultural and theological issues. Widely sought as a columnist and commentator, Dr. Mohler has been quoted in the nation s leading newspapers, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, The Washington Post, The Atlanta Journal/Constitution and The Dallas Morning News. Itinerary DAY 01 SAT. SEP. 28 DEPART USA DAY 02 SUN. SEP. 29 ARRIVE LONDON Upon arrival at the London airport you will be greeted by your Wilcox tour manager and travel by private coach into London. One of the world s great cities, London blends the joys of a modern millennium city with a rich history dating back to the Roman empire. Prior to check-in at the hotel, you will have the opportunity to visit one of London s most important and colourful sites: Queen Elizabeth II s Buckingham Palace. You will explore the state rooms, the rich royal collections of furniture and paintings, and the royal gardens. This evening enjoy a special welcome dinner. SEP. 30 LONDON In the morning we will depart for the royal town of Windsor, dominated by its spectacular castle. We will visit the castle precincts, St George s Chapel, and the sumptuous royal State Apartments resplendent with rich furnishings, tapestry and heraldry. In the afternoon we will return to London to visit Westminster where we see Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament, Trafalgar Square, Nelson s Column, and Piccadilly. We will also enjoy a guided visit through the glorious Westminster Abbey - where nearly all of England s Kings and Queens have been crowned since William the Conqueror in 1066. At the end of our guided visit we will attend Evensong, a celebration of worship through beautiful music. Leisure evening in London. (B) DAY 04 TUE. OCT. 01 - LONDON - (CAMBRIDGE & ELY) Today we will visit Ely and Cambridge. Cambridge is the famous seat of one of the great English Universities, some colleges dating as far back as the 13th century. Walking through the beautiful classical colleges will inspire as much as their peaceful and green surroundings known as the Backs - set on the river Cam. We will visit the beautiful Kings College and chapel. We will enjoy watching the punters on the river as they glide through the water and explore the historic streets of Cambridge, with its book shops, cyclists, tea shops and gardens. In the afternoon we will visit Ely - a place of worship since St. Ethelreda, a Saxon queen, founded a religious community here in the 7th century. Ely Cathedral has rich coloured stonework and stained glass windows boasts a superb Norman nave and transepts and a wonderful East End which was rebuilt in the Gothic style. A highlight is our visit to the Lady
Chapel as well as the 14th century masterpiece, the Octogon. The central octagonal tower, with its vast internal open space and its pinnacles and lantern above, forms the most distinctive and celebrated feature of the cathedral. Return to London for an evening at leisure. (B) DAY 05 WED. OCT. 02 LONDON This morning we will have a guided tour of the oldest part of London, known as the City, whose foundation was originally a Celtic fishing village later expanded by the Romans nearly 2000 years ago. We will visit The Tower of London, a fortress dating back to the 11th century and site of prison and place of execution even to kings and queens. See the White Tower and the Jewel House, which houses the stunning crown jewels. Afterwards you will visit Sir Christopher Wren s masterpiece, St Paul s Cathedral. This iconic emblem dominates the London skyline and survived the London blitz of WWII. Continue to the famous cemetery close by, an oasis of green just north of the city, known as Bunhill Fields. Bunhill Fields boasts unique historic significance, and is the last resting place of Protestant non-conformists including Sir Isaac Newton, John Bunyan and Susannah Wesley. OCT. 03 LONDON / OXFORD Journey this morning through the quintessential English countryside of the Cotswolds, a region famed for its green and gold landscapes, fields threaded by hedgerows and picture postcard villages carved out of honey coloured stone. We will visit the grand historic ancestral home of Sir Winston Churchhill at the truly magnificent Blenheim Palace. We will visit the house and gardens and the special exhibition about Churchill s life, told through artifacts and photographs. From Blenheim Palace, we will transition to Oxford. Our guided tour will introduce us to this great university city, known as the city of the dreaming spires due to the plethora of spires, pinnacles and cupolas that dominate its skyline. We will visit the 16th century Christ Church College, one of the most famous at the historic colleges of the University of Oxford. Included are visits to the Great Hall and the tiny chapel which is in fact Oxford Cathedral. Enjoy leisure evening and overnight in Oxford. (B) DAY 07 FRI. OCT. 04 OXFORD / YORK Today we journey to one of England s most facinating and perfectly preserved historic cities: York. Our journey will take us through the Derbyshire Peak District, one of England s most scenic drives, designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. We will stop at the heart of the peak district to visit Bakewell, an utterly delightful and picturesque market town. Leisure time for lunch which must include the famed Bakewell pudding. After lunch we will continue to York. The city is set upon the river Ouse and is a joy to explore. Your luxury hotel is nestled within the city walls, walking distance to all the sites of York. Dinner at a local restaurant in York. (B&D) DAY 08 SAT. OCT. 05 YORK We will have a walking tour of York, which is one of England s most interesting ancient cities. We will see the fine York Minster with its beautiful medieval
stained-glass windows and marvel at the narrow cobbled streets called the shambles. Enjoy some leisure time to explore York - a city full of history, delightful shops, the amazing Betty s tea rooms and numerous superb museums such as the York Art Gallery, Jorvik Viking Museum, the Castle Museum and the National Railway Museum. For those with a head for heights and a love of steps you may also take a walk around the historic city walls that encircle the city. Enjoy an evening at leisure in York. (B) DAY 09 SUN. OCT. 06 YORK / DURHAM / EDINBURGH Enjoy a scenic drive through the wild and beautiful landscapes of the Northumberland National Park. We will stop in Durham to visit its unique and historic cathedral that overlooks the whole city. From Durham, we will continue over the border into Scotland and arrive at one of Europe s most beautiful cities: Edinburgh. Dinner and overnight at our hotel in Edinburgh. (B&D) DAY 10 MON. 0CT. 07 EDINBURGH In the morning we will enjoy a guided tour of the city. See the unique old town and the Royal Mile, with its tall houses dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. Visit the ancient, romantic fortress of Edinburgh Castle, perched high above the city, with panoramic views of Edinburgh and the Firth of Forth. We will attend the weekly worship service at historic St Giles Cathedral at midday. We will also see the new town, a fine Georgian architectural creation of wide streets, garden squares and sweeping crescents. After our afternoon visit to Greyfriars Kirk the remainder of the afternoon is at leisure to enjoy shopping along Princess Street, and George Street, visiting the fine museums, or just enjoying the unique ambience of Edinburgh.
