Purpose Why learn the Bible? It is the greatest book ever written o It is God s Word, which reveals His will and plan for man 2 Timothy 3:16-17 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. Inspiration = theopneustos = Theo = God; Pneo = Blow o God Breathed 2 Peter 1:20-21 knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. Moved = of persons borne in a ship over the sea. Focus As well as being equipped through the Word we are going to focus on the primary figure in the Bible, Jesus Christ. We will pause to mention some of the many types and prophecies through the Old Testament as well as His life and ministry in the New. o Jesus to the 2 on the road to Emmaus Luke 24:25-27 And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself. o Jesus to His disciples after His resurrection Luke 24:44-47 all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me The Old Testament points to the coming of Jesus as the Savior and the New Testament records that event. o As Augustine said more than 1,500 years ago, The New is in the Old contained; the Old is in the New explained. i The Torah The First 5 Books of the Bible are called o The Torah = Hebrew for Law o The Law of Moses Moses being the author o The Pentateuch = Greek for Five Volumes Genesis (Beginning) The Book of Beginnings 4 Major Events 1.
