Transcription:

Then I saw thrones, and seated on them were those 4 to whom the authority to judge was committed. Revelation 20:4a So let s think about who will judge in the Millennium. Verse 6 also says they will reign with him for a thousand years. Daniel 5 speaks of the Old Testament Saints.

But the saints of the Most High shall receive the 18 kingdom and possess the kingdom forever, forever and ever. until the Ancient of Days came, and judgment was 22 given for the saints of the Most High, and the time came when the saints possessed the kingdom. And the kingdom and the dominion and the greatness 27 of the kingdoms under the whole heaven shall be given to the people of the saints of the Most High; his kingdom shall be an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him. Revelation 5:10, 22, 27

Certainly the Apostles - Then Peter said in reply, See, we have left 27 everything and followed you. What then will we have? Jesus said to them, Truly, I say to you, in the new 28 when the Son of Man will sit on his glorious world,[b] throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. Matthew 19:27-28

And, New Testament Saints - Or do you not know that the saints will judge the 2 world? And if the world is to be judged by you, are you incompetent to try trivial cases? Do you not 3 know that we are to judge angels? 1 Corinthians 6:2-3a if we endure, we will also reign with him; 12 if we deny him, he also will deny us; 2 Timothy 2:12 The one who conquers, I will grant him to sit with me 21 on my throne, as I also conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne. Revelation 3:10

and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth. Revelation 5:10

Also I saw the souls of those who had been 4 a beheaded for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. Revelation 20:4a This is a specific class of saints. Those who had not worshipped the beast or received his mark. They were martyred by beheading.

9 After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, 10 and crying out with a loud voice, Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb! 11 And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, 12 saying, Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen. 13 Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, Who are these, clothed in white robes, and from where have they come? 14 I said to him, Sir, you know. And he said to me, These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation. They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Revelation 7:9-14

They came to life and reigned with Christ for a 4b thousand years. Revelation 20:4b Those who were the focal point of Satan s hatred and the beast s persecution through the tribulation are now exalted, rewarded and blessed by being resurrected and reigning with Christ for a thousand years. They will reign as well!

They came to life and reigned with Christ for a 4b thousand years. The rest of the dead did not come to life until the 5 thousand years were ended. This is the first resurrection. Revelation 20:5 In his explanation of the first resurrection, Walvoord states this - At the end of the church age the rapture of the church will take place, and the dead in Christ will be raised. At the end of the great tribulation, the tribulation saints will also be raised from the dead.

Walvoord continues, It would seem clear from these facts that the term the first resurrection is not an event, but an order of resurrection including all of the righteous who are who are raised from the dead before the millennial kingdom begins. They are the first in contrast to those who are raised last, after the millennium, when the wicked dead are raised and judged.

Walvoord concludes, Just as there are two kinds of physical death, the first death that results in burial, and the second death that is described as being cast into the lake of fire, so there are two kinds of resurrection, a first resurrection of the righteous and a second resurrection of the evil. They are separated by at least a thousand years. Just as the first death did not occur all in one moment but is experienced individually by those who die over a long period of time, so the first resurrection is fulfilled according to either the raptured saints or the resurrected saints at the beginning of the millennium.

Blessed and holy is the one who shares in the first 6 resurrection! Over such the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and they will reign with him for a thousand years. Revelation 20:6 Whether it be the Rapture or the Saints that persist through the tribulation without succumbing to Satan, those who share in this first resurrection will not only avoid the judgement of the Second Death, but will rule and reign with Christ for a millennium.

The Sheep and the Goats Last week we talked about the Seven Dispensational Periods with the Millennium being the last period before we enter into eternity. After the battle Armageddon Jesus tells us that He will place the sheep, Christians, on His right and non- Christians on His left (Matthew 25:31-46).

When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the 31 angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will 32 separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. And he will 33 place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. Then the King will say to those on his right, Come, 34 you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. Matthew 25:31-34

Those who are placed on His right will go into the millennial kingdom (Matthew 25:34). This kingdom starts as an earthly kingdom and one-thousand years later transitions into a heavenly kingdom (Revelation 20:2, 4-5; Revelation 21:5-7; 1 John 5:5 and Revelation 2:11). Those on His left will go into eternal punishment which is hell or the Lake of Fire. And these will go away into eternal punishment, but 46 the righteous into eternal life. Matthew 25:46

Down through the ages, Some have said the goat and sheep judgment occurs immediately at Jesus Second Coming. Others believe it occurs at the Great White Throne. This difference of opinion occurs because of one s view of the end times held by dispensationalists and non-dispensationalists (amillennialists and postmillennialists). Non-dispensationalists say Matthew 25:31-46 is the Great White Throne judgment. But there are several reasons why this cannot be true.

First, if the non-dispensationalists are correct that the sheep and goat judgment occurs at the Great White Throne judgment, then everyone should be sent to the lake of fire, according to Revelation 20:11-15. 11 Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. 12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. 13 And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done. 14 Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. 15 And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

The postmillennial view states that Christ will return at the end of the millennium. Second Coming White Throne Judgement All Judged Continual Progress of Church Church Age Eternity Millenium

The amillennial view denies the literal nature of an earthly millennial kingdom over which Christ reigns for a thousand years. Amillennials understand Revelation 20 to be describing the binding of Satan being fulfilled in the Church Age. Second Coming White Throne Judgement All Judged Church Age Eternity

But this cannot be true since earlier in Revelation 20:4b-6 the Holy Spirit has told us that those who are resurrected earlier the first resurrection will not be subject to the second death. 4 Also I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. 5 The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended. This is the first resurrection. 6 Blessed and holy is the one who shares in the first resurrection! Over such the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and they will reign with him for a thousand years.

There are two different resurrections and two different judgments in Revelation.

In Matthew 25:31-33 Jesus sits on a glorious throne When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the 31 angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will 32 separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. And he will place 33 the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. and in Revelation 20:11 Jesus sits on a great white throne, which is a throne of judgment. Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated 11 on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them.

The sheep and goat judgment is for those who are living (Matthew 25:31). In Revelation 20:4-15, the resurrections are for dead people.

Premillennial View

And when the thousand years are ended, Satan will 7 be released from his prison Revelation 20:7 The Millennium is the testing of man under ideal conditions. At the end of the Millennium, Satan is released to again wreak havoc.

and will come out to deceive the nations that are at 8 the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them for battle; their number is like the sand of the sea. Revelation 20:8 The first thing Satan will do is to organize a war. The reference to God and Magog probably refer to the similar territory of the invasion in Ezekiel 38 and 39. It would indicate a huge invasion force of those who rebel against the iron rod leadership of Christ through the Millennium.

Gog is typically seen as a ruler. Magog is the ancient grandson of Noah who tradition tells us settled in the northern regions of the Black Sea which is Russia. There is much debate as to whether the Gog and Magog of Ezekiel and the Gog and Magog of Revelation are the same.

Jon Courson writes - At this point, Russia already having been destroyed on the hills of Israel (Ezekiel 38-39), I believe this usage of God and Magog in this passage is similar to our usage of Waterloo. Because Napoleon was defeated by Wellington in the Battle of Waterloo, the term Waterloo has come to signify a decisive battle or turning point. So, too, I believe the reference to God and Magog in this passage speaks of a cataclysmic, monumental battle in which Satan attempts a final rebellion.

And they marched up over the broad plain of the 9 earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city, but fire came down from heaven and consumed them, Revelation 20:9 A cataclysmic judgement on Satan and his wicked followers. The camp of the saints is preserved.

and the devil who had deceived them was thrown into 10 the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. Revelation 20:10 Satan joins the evil masterpieces he created, the beast and the false prophet, in the lake of fire and sulphur, where they have been tormented for 1000 years as they waited for their prince. This is the last stop for Satan. This is the end of his career.

Then I saw a great white throne and him who was 11 seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. Revelation 20:11 The One John sees on the Great White Throne is of such great majesty that earth and sky flee away before Him. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and 10 then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly will be burned up and dissolved, and bodies[a] the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed. 2 Peter 3:10

And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before 12 the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. Revelation 20:12 John sees the dead, great and small (all walks of life and all degrees of greatness), standing before God awaiting their judgement. From the context it may be assumed that these are the evil dead.

This is the Second Resurrection. The resurrection of those who are DEAD, physically and spiritually! THERE WILL BE NO CHRISTIANS AT THE GREAT WHITE THRONE JUDGEMENT! In the Book of John, we are told that Jesus Himself will be the judge.

For the Father judges no one, but has given all 22 judgment to the Son, that all may honor the Son, just 23 as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. And he has given him authority to execute judgment, 27 because he is the Son of Man. John 5:22, 27

but God raised him on the third day and made him to 40 appear, not to all the people but to us who had been 41 chosen by God as witnesses, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. And he commanded 42 us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one appointed by God to be judge of the living and the dead. Acts 10:40-42 Both resurrections are included in this. The First Resurrection of the Living spanning both the Rapture and His Second Coming. The Second Resurrection of the spiritually dead!

I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ 1. Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: 2 Timothy 4:1

another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books Jon Courson writes - If you re a Christian, your name is written in the Book of Life. Those who are not a Christian, are not. But I lived a pretty good life, they ll protest. Yet the books that have recorded everything they ever did will prove otherwise.

Jon Courson continues - You see, God made us in such a way that we are spared from remembering the sins we have committed. He let us remember enough sin to make us aware of our need for salvation - but not every motive, every word of gossip, every cutting comment, every angry feeling. When the books are opened, the utter weight of all one s sin will come to light. God sends no one to hell. By the time Volume 167 of one s sins is opened, it s as if man will cry Depart from me for I am a sinful man, and will send himself to the Lake of Fire.

by canceling the record of debt that stood against 14 us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. Colossians 2:14 Thank you Lord Jesus!!!!!!

And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death 13 and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done. Revelation 20:13 The resurrection of the evil. Those raised from the sea are indicative of those who did not have a normal burial. Even if the earthly body has disintegrated, it will be resurrected. Hades will give up those who have been awaiting the final White Throne Judgement. The term each one of them implies individual judgement.

The judgement of the evil dead is made on the basis of the books that are opened, apparently being in two classifications. This shows that God s judgement is not arbitrary, but based on evidence from the person s life. The book of life evidently refers to the roll of those who are saved and have eternal life. The other books mentioned as plural are probably a divine record of their works. The sum of their works is examined and the dead are judged on the basis of this rigorous examination.

At the Judgement Seat of Christ, when He returns victorious to usher in the Millennium, believers are judged according to their works and rewarded. each one's work will become manifest, for the Day will 13 disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. If 14 the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. If anyone's work is 15 burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire. 1 Corinthians 3:13-15

At the Great White Throne Judgement, there is no salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. All is based upon works. There is no indication that any righteous are found at this Judgement.

According to Isaiah, in the Millennium, men and women will return to the lifespan God granted in Genesis - No more shall there be in it 20 an infant who lives but a few days, or an old man who does not fill out his days, for the young man shall die a hundred years old, and the sinner a hundred years old shall be accursed. Isaiah 65:20 But, according to this, it also seems that men will grow old and die in the Millennium.

John Walvoord writes - It is clear that the unsaved who die in the millennium are included in this judgement. The Scriptures are silent, however, concerning any Rapture or translation of saints who survive the millennium and concerning the resurrection of saints who may die in the millennium. Both events may be safely assumed, but they are not the subject of divine revelation, probably on the principle that this truth is of no practical application to saints now living.

Walvoord continues - The resurrection of the evil dead is in sharp contrast to the resurrection of the righteous dead. Although the passage does not state so explicitly, the implication in the Great White Throne Judgement is that no one is saved. Nothing is said here of the reward of the righteous. Apparently there is a separate resurrection of any righteous who may have died in the millennium, although this teaching is not presented anywhere in the Word of God.

Walvoord concludes - The righteous are given bodies like the holy, immortal, and incorruptible body of Christ in His resurrection. The evil dead are given resurrection bodies suited for eternal punishment.

-However-

J. Dwight Pentecost, in Things to Come writes - In the Millennium, sickness will be removed. The ministry of the King as a healer will be seen throughout the age, so that sickness and even death, except as a penal measure in dealing with overt sin, will be removed. Pentecost refers to these passages - For I will restore health to you And heal you of your wounds, says the Lord, Because they called you an outcast saying: This is Zion; No one seeks her. Jeremiah 30:17

I will seek what was lost and bring back what was 16 driven away, bind up the broken and strengthen what was sick; but I will destroy the fat and the strong, and feed them in judgment. Ezekiel 34:16 And the inhabitant will not say, I am sick ; The people who dwell in it will be forgiven their iniquity. Isaiah 33:24 (Perhaps iniquity will be forgiven if there is true repentance)

Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of 14 fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. Revelation 20:14 All who died physically and were in Hades, the intermediate state, are here found unworthy and cast into the Lake of Fire. The Second Death.

Rev 20:1 The rest of the evil dead, after being judged at the great white throne, will follow the beast, the false prophet, and the devil into this eternal doom!

And if anyone's name was not found written in the 15 book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire. Revelation 20:15 Why? Because their names were not in the Lamb s Book of Life! This is the destiny for those whose names are not found in the Lambs Book of Life. Those who are cast into the Lake of Fire are there, not because God wished them this destiny, but rather because they would not come to God for the Grace that He offered at no cost but to Himself!

The Lake of Fire is not symbolic! The poor man died and was carried by the angels to 22 Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried, and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up 23 his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. And he called out, Father Abraham, have 24 mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame. Luke 16:22-24 (This is NOT a parable.)

Those who are cast into the Lake of Fire are not destroyed or killed. Remember, the Beast and the False Prophet have been in this torment for a thousand years waiting for Satan. But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, 8 as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death. Revelation 21:8

In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not 2 so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will 3 come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. John 14:2-3 This is it!!!!

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first 1 heaven and the first earth had passed away, Revelation 21:1a The old earth is gone! Then I saw a great white throne and him who was 11 seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. Revelation 20:11 Behold, I am making all things new. Revelation 21:5a

17 For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth, and the former things shall not be remembered or come into mind. Isaiah 65:17 For as the new heavens and the new earth 22 that I make shall remain before me, says the Lord, so shall your offspring and your name remain. Isaiah 66:22

But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, 10 in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. Therefore, 11 since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, 12 because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new 13 heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. 2 Peter 3:10-13 NKJV

The earth and the heavens will be cleansed. In Genesis 6 and 7, the earth was cleansed by water. Prior to the coming of the New Heavens and the New Earth, the earth and heavens will be cleansed by fire.

and the sea was no more. Revelation 21:1a Apparently, in the New Heaven and New Earth, there will be no need for water. Our resurrected, eternal bodies will have no need for it. Dr. Henry Morris thinks this suggests that our resurrected bodies will have no need for blood, since blood is about 90% water and present day human flesh is about 65% water. We are redeemed, blood has already redeemed us before we enter the eternal state. There is no need for it anymore.

and the sea was no more. Revelation 21:1a This also implies that there will be no boundaries separating God s people in the New Heaven and New Earth.

And I saw the holy city, 2 Revelation 21:2a The city is holy! Has there ever been a truly holy city??? Why is this city holy? The answer is in Verse 8. But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, 8 as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.

And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down 2 out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. Revelation 21:2 The city comes down from God Himself.
