Rev. Steve Byers, slbyers@tbcraleigh.com Special thanks to Kurtis Konrad for playing the organ this past Sunday, and to the Trinity Laymen for providing music for both morning services. What a joy it is to hear all of these musicians serving God through music. MUSIC CALENDAR March 3 rd Children s Day: Preschool & Children s Choir in 10:55 morning service 10 th Living Praise in 10:55 am service 17 th Bells of Praise and Student Choir, 10:55 am service 24 th Orchestra in both services; New Covenant, 10:55 am MUSICAL MYTH BUSTER #5: Singing in a choir is old hat and boring. It amazes me to hear that people think singing in a choir is something old and boring. I ve been singing in the church since I was 7 years old and I ve never seen any opportunity in a choir as boring. There s so much going on musically and emotionally that staying engaged hasn t been a problem for me. Sure, choirs have been around for many years; some things that are classic and have withstood the test of time usually stick around for a while. Preferences, choices and styles are subjective and may change, but I think choirs are here to stay. Singing is an expression of joy and love to a God of love and mercy who deserves our praises. The Bible is full of references to singing praise to God for His many ways. Consider the declaration in Psalm 104:33 I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have being. There is a very close relationship between singing praises to God and the act of worship. Vocally expressing praise, thanksgiving, and adoration to our Heavenly Father moves from the inward to the outward act of worship as God s people. Singing is a vehicle by which our gratitude is used corporately together. It is a necessary element that we can do personally and corporately; we can also listen to others express their praises in choirs and ensembles. We join together in this unique way that we all can understand; it is the language of praise. That has never been old hat. God deserves our praises, and He delights in our singing and making music for His glory. Choirs use this musical language by working as a team. From simple to rich harmonies spread over measures of a rhythmic pulse, choirs and accompanists work to learn and to communicate the gospel of Christ in a complex system of artistry. This act of worship takes time and dedication, talent, and patience to blend together for each week s presentations. Boring? There s no time for boredom because there s so much to learn and experience! Being in a choir takes teamwork for each week s services, but it also takes ministry and encouragement to one another on this journey. Our choirs are family in that no one person is more important than another; we are in this together and every singer is a vital part of the worship leadership process. We are the body of Christ and we need each other to continue what God has called us to do. He has called musicians to minister and to serve through the powerful gift of music. Worship, teamwork, service, ministry.these aren t old or boring. They are the very foundation of who we are and what we do as the body of Christ. Musicians minister to our church body as well as to each other using the gifts God has given us. Maybe you have a gift of singing that you can offer in one of our choirs at TBC? Don t let the year pass by too quickly before getting involved. Join a choir today and make His praise glorious with us!
