Pastor s Column October 28 29, 2017 I Am Third I Am Third is the memoir of Gale Sayers, one of the best running backs in the history of the NCAA and professional football. Sayers played college football for the University of Kansas where he was nicknamed The Kansas Comet. In a brief but highly productive NFL career, Sayers spent seven seasons with the Chicago Bears from 1965 to 1971, though multiple injuries effectively limited him to five seasons of play. He was known for his elusiveness, agility, and grace. In his rookie year, he scored an NFL-record 22 touchdowns: 14 rushing, six receiving, and one each on punt and kickoff returns. Sayers was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1977 at age 34, and remains the youngest person to receive that honor. His friendship with Bears teammate Brian Piccolo, who died of cancer in 1970, inspired Sayers to write his autobiography, which in turn was the basis for the 1971 made-for-tv movie Brian's Song. The title of the book comes from a line Sayers uttered while receiving one of his many awards. Speaking of his life he said, The Lord is first, my family and friends are second, and I am third. I Am Third could also serve as an apt synopsis of Jesus teaching in our Gospel reading this weekend. The Pharisees again try to test Jesus by asking, Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest? While this question may seem simple and easy enough, we need to remember the centrality of the Mosaic Law to Judaism. The Law of Moses is contained in what Jews call the Torah, or what we call the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Bible which contain not only the Ten Commandments, but other moral laws, social laws, dietary laws, purity laws, feasts to observe, sacrifices to offer, and so on. These laws were codified in the Talmud into 365 negative commands and 248 positive commands for a total of 613 laws. So picking out just one of these laws as the greatest would be sure to get Jesus in trouble with one group or another. In his reply, Jesus shows us how the entire law can be condensed into two great commandments. He says, "You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments." Easy to remember, say, and hear, it is not always so easy to put into practice, especially in a world that is always telling us that we should put ourselves first. God is first, and everything else in our lives should flow from that. According to the Baltimore catechism I learned as a child, God made us to know Him and love Him and serve Him in this world, so we might be happy with Him for all eternity in the next. Do we truly put God first in our lives? Do we make Sunday Mass a priority? Do we make time for personal prayer, scripture reading, and meditation? Or do we try to fit God in when we have a rare break in our busy schedules? Others come second. To love your neighbor as yourself is known as the Golden Rule. This love is not some vague sentimentality, but that total commitment which, rooted in devotion to God, manifests itself in practical service of others, especially, as our first reading points out, the alien, the widow, the orphan, the poor and oppressed. I am third. Sin tends to close us in on ourselves, but our true happiness is found in giving of ourselves. St. Teresa of Calcutta used the acronym JOY: Jesus first, Others second, You third. If we could all be more like her, more like Gale Sayers, more like Jesus, think how much better off our world would be. -Fr. Bob

It is hard to believe that October is almost over. Our Fourth Graders have been studying the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. They were given a writing assignment asking them to choose one of the gifts and write about it. We would like to share two of their writings with the parish. There are 7 gifts of the Holy Spirit which help us to follow God s law and live as Jesus did. The gift of the Holy Spirit I chose is Wisdom. Wisdom means the quality or state of being wise. This gift helps us to see and follow God s will in our lives. By using this gift we can change our life and we can also change other people s lives. God s wisdom is not a wisdom of the world because it can t be bought, it can t be studied for or earned. God s wisdom is the foundation of our lives and based upon which the rest of the spiritual house will be built. God s wisdom is like a hidden mystery that can only be revealed by God s spirit. The Holy Spirit is a guide of the path. The Holy Spirit of wisdom helps us to avoid sin and helps me to grow in a way to listen and follow the direction of Jesus. By using this I can easily focus on the path that Jesus told us. -Umer Taj, Grade 4 Wisdom helps us to make good decisions and know things about God and his family. We need wisdom to learn and not forget it. We can t do many things without wisdom. Without wisdom we can t make good decisions. God gave us this gift for a reason. He gave it to us to know about him and Jesus and when we make good decisions we will have a good life. He gave us the knowledge to understand others. It can help us help God to continue his mission. It helps us to succeed and go far. -Phillip Ramos, Grade 4 Office of Faith Formation Office Hours: Monday: 1 PM 5 PM Wednesday & Thursday: 9 AM 2PM 718-769-6311 religiouseducation1@verizon.net ************************ On November 5 - Our Faith Formation children will put on a short presentation at the 10:15am Mass in honor of All Saints Day.
