Reflections: Talk on New Ministry, Building Bridges My name is Marylin Arrigan and my husband, John, and I have been members of this parish for 7 years now. I am here to introduce a new ministry that we are launching here at St. Patrick s called Building Bridges and it will be a faith outreach for LGBT parents and adult siblings. The reason why I m talking about this is because I m the mother of three children one of whom is a transgender daughter. When she came out to us about 3 years ago it was a time of many conflicting feelings for us as parents and for our other children. Someone we thought we had known since birth was telling us that she was really not who we thought she was at all yet here she was standing before us the same intelligent, fun-loving and caring soul we always knew. We realized that it had taken great courage to come out to us and that she needed to hear and see that we still loved her and that we had to show that unwavering love as an example to others around us. In trying to adjust to this new family dynamic, there were many questions in our hearts and minds like how does this affect our family, what will happen to her in this often cruel world, what do we call her, what do we tell people, how does this affect our place in our church community, and will others accept this new reality of US? Not too long ago, I was reading a book called, Building A Bridge by the Jesuit priest Father James Martin. It was about embracing our Catholic LGBT brothers and sisters and their families because that s what our faith as followers of Jesus Christ teaches us to reach out to others and to love deeply. I was very, very moved and thought about all the families who go through what our family went through and felt called to help these families here at St. Patrick s and in this area. I talked to Fr. Tomasz and he was 100 percent supportive of our starting a group here in the parish. That s why we re calling this group Building Bridges because it s based on Fr. Martin s book, Building a Bridge. Our hope is that this group will be a safe place to reflect on mutual struggles, share our faith, support one another and to learn from each other. It will take place once a month and will be starting on Wednesday, May 16 th, at 6:30 PM. Please pray for us in this endeavor. If you, or anyone you know think that they can benefit from this group, please come and give it a try. My contact information is in the bulletin or you can call the office. Please spread the word because there are many families out there who, because of circumstances like a ours, may be looking for support within the community and the church. Here at St. Patrick Parish we support them and we love them. Thank You! & Together we can make a difference! Again this year UniBank will match any size donations up $5,000. The Matching grant program will run from April 21st May 13th (Mother s Day). Letters have gone out to local businesses and churches with the hope that many will help this community effort to feed the local needy.
