SIXTH SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY FEBRUARY 16-17, 2019 AS WE GATHER These Sundays after the Epiphany give us a glimpse and overview of our Lord s earthly ministry of preaching, teaching, and healing. The people who followed Him have seen Him do many great things. In fact, many followed Him mainly in hopes that they would receive healing or some other gift. But today Jesus has everyone stop in their tracks for some teaching, words of wisdom, words of blessing, and words of warning. The blessing is when you know Jesus spiritual promises of forgiveness and assurance of eternal life. The warning is the danger of taking your eyes off of Jesus, being concerned only with the gifts and blessings we receive in this life, that is, things of this world that will surely pass away. As Jesus continues to lead us to His goal His suffering, death, and resurrection we are being drawn to value the spiritual blessings that in faith will provide us with forgiveness and eternal life. HYMN Songs of Thankfulness and Praise LSB 394 Stand CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. P Our help is in the name of the Lord, C who made heaven and earth. P If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? C But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared. P Since we are gathered to hear God s Word, call upon Him in prayer and praise, and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, 1

seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner. C Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen. P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As an ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. SERVICE OF THE WORD INTROIT Ps. 119:1 2, 4 5; antiphon: Ps. 119:7 P I will praise you with an upright heart, when I learn your just and righteous decrees. C Blessèd are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the LORD! P Blessèd are those who keep his testimonies, who seek him with their whole heart. C You have commanded your precepts to be kept diligently. P Oh that my ways may be steadfast in keeping your statutes! C Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. P I will praise you with an upright heart, when I learn your just and righteous decrees. KYRIE LSB 204 C Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. GLORIA IN EXCELSIS LSB 204 C To God on high be glory And peace to all the earth; Goodwill from God in heaven Proclaimed at Jesus' birth! 2

We praise and bless You, Father; Your holy name we sing Our thanks for Your great glory, Lord God, our heav'nly King. To You, O sole-begotten, The Father's Son, we pray; O Lamb of God, our Savior, You take our sins away. Have mercy on us, Jesus; Receive our heartfelt cry, Where You in pow'r are seated At God's right hand on high For You alone are holy, You only are the Lord. Forever and forever, Be worshiped and adored; You with the Holy Spirit Alone are Lord Most High, In God the Father's glory. "Amen!" our glad reply. SALUTATION AND COLLECT OF THE DAY P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Let us pray. O Lord, graciously hear the prayers of Your people that we who justly suffer the consequence of our sin may be mercifully delivered by Your goodness to the glory of Your name; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Sit OLD TESTAMENT READING Jeremiah 17:5 8 5 Thus says the LORD: Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart turns away from the LORD. 6 He is like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see any good come. He shall dwell in the parched places of the wilderness, in an uninhabited salt land. 7 Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose trust is the LORD. 8 He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, 3

for it does not cease to bear fruit. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. [Sunday] CHOIR, GRADES 1-4 "J-E-S-U-S" EPISTLE 1 Corinthians 15:12 20 12Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. 14 And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. 15 We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified about God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. 16For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. 17And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. 18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 19 If in this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied. 20But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Stand ALLELUIA AND VERSE C Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. These things are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. HOLY GOSPEL Luke 6:17 26 P The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the sixth chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord. 17And he came down with them and stood on a level place, with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon, 18 who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. And those who were 4

troubled with unclean spirits were cured. 19 And all the crowd sought to touch him, for power came out from him and healed them all. 20And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said: Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. 21 Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you shall be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh. 22 Blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude you and revile you and spurn your name as evil, on account of the Son of Man! 23 Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for so their fathers did to the prophets. 24 But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. 25 Woe to you who are full now, for you shall be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep. 26 Woe to you, when all people speak well of you, for so their fathers did to the false prophets. P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ. [Saturday] APOSTLES' CREED LSB 207 C I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life T everlasting. Amen. 5

[Sunday] NICENE CREED C I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life T of the world to come. Amen. SERMON "It's Not Fair" Jeremiah 17:5-8 Stand PRAYER OF THE CHURCH P As the prophet reminds us, blessed are those who trust in the Lord. So do we come this day with the concerns of our hearts and our prayers on behalf of all as they have need. P Blessed Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, You have delivered Your people through the blood of Your Son and have given us the new birth into a hope and life that death cannot overcome. Grant to Your Church honesty in our preaching and love in our service to those who have not yet heard the Gospel. Lord, in Your mercy, C hear our prayer. P Blessed Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, You have given us Your pledge and promise that we shall not be alone. Guard Your people against the threats of the enemy and the persecution of a world still against You. Deliver all pastors, teachers, missionaries, deaconesses and other church workers from all that would hinder their service to us on Your behalf, and bestow upon them Your Spirit and His gifts for their faithful work. Continue to guide Rev. Joe Hoem as he considers our Call to be Pastor. Lord, in Your mercy, C hear our prayer. P Blessed Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, You hold in Your hand all the might of man and though we struggle against the enemies of Your will, You have promised to make all things work together for Your purpose. Bless our nation and those who lead us our president, Congress, judges and magistrates and enlighten them with Your Word, so that they would work in accordance with Your will and for the common good. Lord, in Your mercy, C hear our prayer. P Blessed Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, You sent Your Son that we might have healing through His wounds. Be with the sick, the hospitalized, the aged, the infirm, the dying and the troubled in mind or heart [especially Your servants and those we name in our hearts]. Help them to know Your presence and Your peace in their afflictions, and grant them healing and relief as You will. Teach them contentment of heart, and keep them in faith to the day of Christ s coming. Lord, in Your mercy, 7

C hear our prayer. P All these things, blessed Father, and those things You know we need, we pray You to grant us for the sake of and because of the merits of Jesus Christ alone, with whom You live and reign, the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Sit OFFERING While we worship the Lord with our offerings, please write your names in the fellowship registers, indicating the date and time of the service you are attending. To help us serve you more effectively, please use the blanks provided to indicate a change in mailing address, phone numbers (home, work, cell, fax) or e-mail address(es). Please tear out the sheets with names on them and let them stick out of the top of the folder so that the ushers can collect them. Thank you! Saturday's service continues with the Lord's Prayer SERVICE OF THE SACRAMENT Stand PREFACE LSB 208 P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Lift up your hearts. C We lift them to the Lord. P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C It is right to give Him thanks and praise. P It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, for the countless blessings You so freely bestow on us and all creation. Above all, we give thanks for Your boundless love shown to us when You sent Your only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ, into our flesh and laid on Him our sin, giving Him into death that we might not die eternally. Because He is now risen from the dead and lives and reigns to all eternity, all who believe in Him will overcome sin and death and will rise again to new life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with 8

all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: SANCTUS LSB 208 C Holy, holy, holy Lord God of Sabaoth adored; Heav'n and earth with full acclaim shout the glory of Your name. Sing hosanna in the highest, sing hosanna to the Lord; Truly blest is He who comes in the name of the Lord. PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING P Blessed are You, O Lord our God, king of all creation, for You have had mercy on us and given Your only-begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. We give You thanks that in His most Holy Supper You reveal Your glory to us. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood so that we may one day behold Your glory face to face. Hear us as we pray in His name and as He has taught us: LORD'S PRAYER LSB 209 C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. Saturday's service continues with the Benediction THE WORDS OF OUR LORD PAX DOMINI LSB 209 9
