CONNEC IONS from your Pastor s Heart It Pays to Go to Church! Leon Darby met Tonia Sizemore in 1957 at the evening worship service of the First Baptist Church of Montgomery. Leon was the captain of the football team at Lee High School. Tonia was the editor of Lanier s legendary high school newspaper, The Blue and White. Another young lady invited Leon to come to FBC because of the strong student ministry so he hustled over to check out the team. At the fellowship following the service, Leon met Tonia, and they decided to get together on Monday night and listen to his nifty record collection. Leon accidentally forgot the records when he departed so he had to return to the Sizemore house on Tuesday evening to retrieve his music and see Tonia again. Their next meeting took place at First Baptist on the following Sunday. Then came their first car date. Leon borrowed his dad s automobile and drove Tonia to a new section of town called Hillwood. As they surveyed the newly developing subdivision, Leon mused, If we get married, this cul-de-sac would be a nice place to build our house. Tonia simply replied, I agree! The deal was sealed. They fell completely in love with each other and never dated anyone else. They were married at First Baptist on Thanksgiving Day of 1961. Tonia recently completed the earthly section of her journey and graduated into heaven. She and Leon embedded their lives in the rich fabric of our First Baptist Family. Tonia will be deeply missed until we join her in the presence of Christ. Leon and Tonia s love story illustrate many transferable truths but it highlights for me that it pays to go to church! Proverbs 13:20 instructs, If you walk with the wise, you will grow wise. But a companion of fools suffers harm. When you align your life with authentic Jesus-followers, then your faith, wisdom, virtue, discipline, discipleship, stability, productivity and Christlikeness will grow. There is an accurate adage which teaches, Show me your friends and I will show you your future. When your primary relationships link you to people who are filled with the Spirit of Christ and overflow with His love, joy, peace, purity and serving; it will help you to rise to the top of your game. So, let me encourage you to come to church because you might meet the love of your life. Even more importantly, you will meet the Lord of your life and find a family of faith who will facilitate growing your walk with God which will enable you to find and fulfill your divinely-designed destiny!
