English ANTHEM The Chancel Choir/Dr. James Smith, Music Director Lord, My Heart Is Not Proud (Leo Nestor) Kevan Torfeh, Cello O Lord, my heart is not proud, nor are my eyes haughty. I do not busy myself with great matters, with marvels beyond my ken. Rather, I have stilled and quieted my soul like a weaned child at its mother s breast, so is my soul weaned. Israel, Israel, hope is in the Lord, now and for evermore. (Psalm 131) Written for James Vail and the Choir of Pacific Palisades Presbyterian Church THE GOSPEL Mark 8:34-35 (Pew Bible page 44, N.T.) INTERCESSORY PRAYER FOR THE CREATION (with sung response) THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. CHORAL RESPONSE WE OFFER OUR GIFTS & OURSELVES Your generous gifts support the ministries and outreach of the church. You may place gifts of cash or checks made out to First UMC in the offering plates as they are passed. You may also place your Let s Connect/Let Us Pray card in the offering plate. Give online at any time at www.santamonicaumc.org. Credit cards are now accepted at the Sunday Hospitality Table during Coffee Fellowship. Thank you. May God grow in us generous and joyful hearts. THE OFFERTORY The Chancel Choir We Are Glad (Craig Courtney) When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dream. Then our mouth was filled with laughter and our tongue with shouts of joy; Then they said among the nations, The Lord has done great things for them. We are glad, for the Lord has done great things. Those who sow in tears shall reap with songs of joy; They that go forth weeping, bearing seed shall come home with shouts of joy bringing their sheaves with them. *RESPONSE #95 UMH The Doxology *UNISON PRAYER OF DEDICATION Tricia Guerrero May we forge a new friendship with the earth and discover a new affinity with beauty, with life, and with Christ, in whom all things were created in heaven and on earth, for all things were created through him and for him. Amen. WE GO FORTH TO SERVE *HYMN #2212 TFWS My Life Flows On *BENEDICTION *BENEDICTION RESPONSE POSTLUDE Prelude in G Major - BWV 541 (J.S. F O C U S O N FIRST UMC ASKS THE COMMUNITY February 25, 2018 Community Board The new church community board was designed to welcome and engage the community in various ways. For its premier, we ask this year s Lenten question: What is one thing you can do today to love God and love Creation? As mentioned by Rev. Patricia Farris sermon last week, the Lenten theme, Rev. Larry Young writes his thoughts Love God/Love Creation,... encourages us to examine our hearts, the on the Community Board. state of the creation, and our own commitment to live as more faithful stewards of all that God has entrusted to us for safe-keeping and for our joy. All are invited to share your thoughts on the board. Ask your family, ask your friends and see what different ideas may come up each week! The community board will be out on Sundays during Lent. Place of Prayer O, let the place of secret prayer become to me the most beloved spot on earth. Andrew Murray Besides church, where do you find yourself praying? Do you have a regular place? Time of day? Here are some places of prayer shared by the congregation I often pray in bed each night as I m falling asleep. Rather than letting my mind wander or focus on my fears or worries, I give it to God at the very end of the day. I pray sitting up in my bed every morning and night. I have a long commute, so I often find myself praying out loud in the car, sometimes fists in the air yelling! People driving by me just think I m talking on my phone :) I typically like to pray while I m experiencing nature in some way; a hike, a walk along the beach, or just sitting somewhere outdoors. I also like to be in prayer by myself in our chapel. If you would like to share your place of prayer, you can answer with or without a photo, and email Shalimar Carducci s.carducci@santamonicaumc.org, or leave an anonymous note at the Sunday Hospitality table.
