Week 6 Day one Misquotes of the Bible You just can t understand God. Even though God is infinitely far above our ability to fully understand, He tells us through the Scriptures very specific truths about Himself so that we can know what He is like, and be drawn to worship Him. Over the next couple of weeks, we are going to examine some misquotes of God and correct them with truth. How do we do that? By taking them to the Word of God and speaking the truth. When people say, You just can t understand God.. that is a falsehood. Yes, it is true that there is a lot about God that we won t ever fully understand, but there is a lot that we can learn from him. Living a life of faith is about not-knowing everything but understanding that we are trusting God with the results. Learning the names of God and what each of his names mean will help us gain a deeper understanding of who He is. Take the time and look up the individual scriptures further in your Bible. Jehovah This name means I AM WHO I AM. Exodus 3:13-15 Jehovah-M Kaddesh This name means the God who sanctifies A God separate from all that is evil requires that the people who follow Him be cleansed from all evil. Leviticus 20:7-8 Immanuel God with us. I AM God never changes. His promises never fail. When we are faithless, He is faithful. Isaiah 7:14 Jehovah Nissi This name means God our banner. Under his banner we go from triumph to triumph. He gives us victory through our Lord Christ Jesus. Exodus 17:8-15 El-Shaddai This name means God Almighty, the God who is all sufficient and all bountiful, the source of all blessings. Genesis 49:25-26 God is Adonai This name means Master or Lord. God our Adonia, calls all God s people to acknowledge themselves as servants, claiming His right to reign as Lord of our lives. 2 Samuel 7:18-20

Elohim This name means strength or power he is transcendent, mighty and strong. Displays His supreme power, sovereignty, and faithfulness in His covenant relationship with us. Genesis 17:7-8 El Roi This name means God who sees me. God knows all our thoughts and feelings. Jesus knew the thoughts of those around him, demonstrating that he is El Roi Genesis 16:11-14. Matthew 22:18, 26:21 Jehovah-Jireh The God who provides. Just as He provided yesterday, He will also provide today and tomorrow. Genesis 22:14 Jehovah-shalom This name means God of peace. God s peace passes understanding and sustains us even through difficult times. It is the product of fully being what we were created to be. Judges 6:16-24 Jehovah-Rapha The God who Heals. God has provided the final cure for spiritual, physical, and emotional sickness in Jesus Christ. Psalm 103:3 Jehovah Rohi The Lord is my shepherd. The Lord protects, directs, guides, leads, and cares for his people. Psalm 23:1 Jehovah-Tsidkenu The Lord our Righteousness. Jesus is the King who would come from David s line, and is the one who imparts His righteousness to us. Jeremiah 23:5,6 Daily Bible Reading: Matthew 25 The Parable of the ten virgins, Parable of the talents, The final judgment. Prayer: Lord I want to learn what is truth and what is a lie about you. Help me to dig deeper into your word to understand fully, who you are. Help me to gain a deeper understanding about each of these names to gain deeper insight of you. I ask these things in your name, Amen

Day two, Misquotes of the Bible God is in control. I am sure you have heard this said at some point in your life. Most people will say that God is in control. But think about it, is that true? Is God truly in control of this life down here? Let s take for example, you. Does God control every action and part of your life? Does he decide what decisions you make and what you choose to do? When you got dressed today, did he make you wear a certain clothing? Did he make you eat a certain food? No, we have the choice of what we wear or eat. He doesn t force anything upon us. In the Lords prayer in Matthew 6 it says: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Why would Jesus tell us to pray a prayer that has us ask the Lord for His will to be done on earth as it is in heaven? God wants us to be praying for guidance and wisdom in knowing what to do so that we can have our life here on earth as it is in heaven. Do you think there are any bad things in heaven? Do you think there is chaos and hurting going on in heaven? No heaven is perfect and do you know why? It is because God is in control in heaven. Not on this earth. God has given the earth to the children of man. In Psalm 115:16 it says: The heavens are the Lord s heavens, but the earth he has given to the children of man. We have the decision and the choice to do whatever we want on this earth. Anything with a mind of its own can do the what it wants. You do not have to do God s will. God gave us that freedom. Isaiah 65:12, 66:3-4 Read these two passages about how we have the control in our life. In Genesis 6:5, the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth and that their intentions were evil. If all these evil people on the earth were part of God s plan, then why would God grieve? That is the next part of this verse. He grieves because he hopes that people will listen to him and turn from their evil ways. It grieves God when we do not obey or follow after him. But God is definitely not in control down here on earth. He isn t the one making bad things happen, that is the result of human choices in life. We are the cause of our destruction, not God. Daily Bible reading Matthew 26, The plot to kill Jesus, Judas betrays Jesus, The Passover, Lord s supper, Peter s denial, Praying in Gethsemane, Betrayal and arrest of Jesus, Jesus before Caiaphas, Peter denies Jesus Prayer: Lord open my eyes to the truths of your word. Help me to grow deeper and stronger in faith through you. I don t want my will to be done on earth, I want your will to be done in my life. I ask this in your name, Amen

Day three, Misquotes of the Bible If God wants me to do this, he will make it happen. This statement goes with what you learned yesterday. I know myself, I have been guilty of praying for things like Lord, if you want me to do this, then open the door and if you don t then shut it. Those were wrong things to pray. In James 1: 5 it says: If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord, he is a double minded man, unstable in all his ways. You need wisdom to know what to do in certain situations of life. Right? When you don t know, you want to be wise with your reactions or decisions. The bible says that if you lack knowing or wisdom, to ask and he will give it to you. The Lord doesn t hold back. It also says to ask in faith, that means to trust that you got it. Not to doubt it, because when you doubt it, you will be like the waves of the sea being tossed by the wind. You will waiver with your decision. Have you ever done something and then thought, Now I knew I shouldn t have done that! That is the wrong mode to be in. If you want direction, you ask the Lord for it and then trust to hear that inner voice the Holy Spirit to direct you to the right path. When you question you are a double minded man unstable in all your ways. But when you make the choice that God gives you, if things start to feel like it was the wrong choice, you can still say confidently, No, I am standing strong in this storm that this is the path that the Lord has me on. No matter what happens. Isaiah 48:17, I am the Lord your God, who teaches you to profit, who leads you in the way you should go. Oh that you had paid attention to my commandments! Then your peace would have been like a river, and your righteousness like the waves of the sea.. Do you see how when you look to the Lord for your answers and He gives them to you, you will have peace like a river? Think back to the beginning of the old testament when the children of Israel were about the enter the promise land. God had a wide open path for them to go in but they did not enter. They sent spies up ahead to tell them what it was like and they listened to them instead of listening to what God told them. They were right on the outside door to an awesome opportunity, but they missed it by not listening to him and listening to others advice. People are great to talk to if you are dealing with things, but to look to the only person who can give you the correct advice or wisdom is the best answer ever. He is the one who will guide you to right choices and right opportunities. Daily bible reading: Matthew 27, Jesus delivered to Pilate, Judas hangs himself, Jesus before PilateThe crowd choose Barrabbas, Pilate delivers Jesus to be Crucified, Jesus is mocked, The Crucifixion, The death of Jesus, Burial and the Tomb.

Day four, Misquotes of the Bible You just never know..there must be a reason. We are going through and learning some sayings that people associate with God and the Bible. When bad things happen, sometimes one of the first things people say is, Well there must be a reason for this to happen. God must be teaching you something. They often times forget that the devil is the one out to kill, steal, and destroy things in your life. In John 10:10 it states, The thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. Have you ever had anything stolen from you? How about anything destroyed or killed? The Bible says that those things happen because of Satan. He is looking to take those things from your life, not God. If you look up a few verses before in that same chapter 10:3 it states, The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought them out, he goes before them and they follow for they know his voice. When you know your Fathers voice, you listen to him and follow after him. That is the MOST important key to remember in our life. It is the only way to stay with the Shepherd so that he can protect you and keep you safe from the wolves looking to destroy you. James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above. What God gives you is perfect and good, don t settle for less. Good things come from God and bad things come from Satan. Be a simple minded person. There is only once choice for things, don t wrestle with it. Be happy in life. People get confused considering options they should not even be talking about. Why are people unstable? Because they are undecided. A perfect picture is between Adam and Eve at the tree. Eve s mind was taken from simplicity in God to something complex in Satan. God told her not to eat of the fruit from this tree. Satan makes her question it, Did he really mean not to eat from this tree? Then she started thinking about it and making it complicated. Don t make life complicated. Keep it simple: By his stripes you are healed. If you are dealing with sickness or disease. My God shall supply all my needs according to His glory in Christ Jesus, when you are dealing with not having something. Look up verses to pertain what you are going through in life. Repeat them until they are solid in your mind. When people start commenting and saying likes like, Well, you just never know what the Lord is going to do. Right away you can refute that and say the truth that you have learned in his word. The only way you are going to learn the truth is by reading it every day. Daily Bible reading: Matthew 28, The resurrection, The great commission. Great job, finishing the book of Matthew.

Day 5, Misquotes of the Bible God has a purpose in everything.. It s not up to us, it s up to Him This saying means that we have no responsibility to anything in life and we can be lazy. We can blame God for anything, it is a very convenient response. The Bible says don t be unwise, but be understanding what the will of the Lord is. That is why he gave us his book so we would get wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. He expects us to read it and learn from it. If we just say, Well it s all up to Him and do nothing, then we are being ignorant from the truth. God gives you opportunities and days of life. He says here come get it. Like the gift of Salvation, it isn t forced on us, he tells us how to get it and we decide whether we want it or not. He doesn t make it happen automatically, we have to choose it. The story of the talents that you just read recently in Matthew 25:14. It says he gave according to their ability. God knows those he can trust with more and those that he needs to teach with less. The first one went out and traded and made five more. The second servant, with two he went and traded it to make more. But the one who received one---the one whom the master knew was unsure in his faith, he dug a hole and buried it because he was afraid. When the master arrive, he said to the first two, Well done, you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much. The third one, he condemned saying, You wicked and slothful servant. Seems kind of harsh right for someone just trying to be cautious? He then took the money and gave it to the one who made ten and said, For everyone who has will be more given and he will have an abundance. But for the one who has not, or has done nothing with, his will be taken away. God expects us to do something with our days, our money, and all the things that we have. He wants us to increase it and grow it. He expects that of us. God has given you things, gifts, and abilities, don t waste them by hiding them and being cautious. Be wise with what you do, ask and seek wisdom from God on your direction in life. Daily bible reading: Mark 1,2,3 Let s pick up our reading a little and devote more time to His word. We want to grow stronger and deeper in the things He says. Some of this will be repeat because the gospels are some of the same events just from different person s perspective. It is good to read, not to skim over, because there will be some truths that the Lord will speak to you with.
