Was dem Pastor am Herzen liegt / From the Pastor s Heart Liebe Gemeinde, liebe Freunde!

Dear Congregation and Friends! From the Pastor s Heart We (my family and I) had a wonderful holiday big thanks to those who held the fort here while we were gone. We sang for a whole week in Hermansburg, Natal under the very able guidance of Kirchenmusikdirektor Christian Stötzner, who led this year s Schützwoche. We sang wonderful music, ancient and modern in fact, one of the pieces was sung for the very first time, very recently composed by Ekkehard Knechtel. If you like singing good church music and enjoy good company, I can highly recommend this Choir week organised by the South African Heinrich Schütz Association. When we had completed the week of singing with a concert on the Saturday night and a Divine Service on Sunday, we took off on a trip to the North. We visited Pastor Anja Spiske in Piet Retief, some of you will remember her. She sends her warmest greetings to you all. And from there we went to a little holiday village in Mozambique to spend a few days of rest on the beach there. All in all a really good holiday. You may be wondering, why I mention all this detail. Because I believe it is important for us to rest to find places of peace and rejuvenation our world is so hectic, so driven, so frightfully filled with noise and jarring messages, that we need a Sabbathtime, in which to be reminded again of the fact that we receive life, we are given life gracefully by God it is not something one can earn or hoard it has to be received every day anew. Now you may not have had much of a holiday, or perhaps you did but I urge you to remember even during the ordinary humdrum of life, the hasty breakfasts and the gulped down fast-foods for lunch, the heated meetings of the board and the daily grind of your job, that life is a gift to be shared with humility and grace. It is my prayer and hope that you will become aware of this gift again during the coming days especially when you join us for divine services on Sundays one of the reasons why we celebrate services on Sunday is precisely this: To be reminded of the gift of Life, which comes from God in Christ Jesus. May the Lord bless you all. Felix Meylahn Aug/Sept 2013 LUTHERAN PORT ELIZABETH 5
