REJOICE ALWAYS Some of you may have figured out over the years that one of my favorite passages of Scripture is 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18: Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. As I was thinking about those words this morning, I realized how many times in my own life and how many times in the life of the church we tend to focus more on the last 2 instructions than on the very first. God wants us to celebrate, wants us to have joy. There are difficult times that we face, to be sure. Still, when I reflect on my own life, I see that God has always found ways to bring joy, even in the midst of my darkest days. Sometimes it might be just a moment,, here and gone before I know it. Still, it was a gift nonetheless that reminds me that God was still working in my life. It is just as important as individuals and as a church to take time to rejoice along with taking time to pray and give thanks. So I thought this month I would pass on a couple of things that we as a congregation have the opportunity to rejoice about. New friends. Reggie & Patsy Vick joined our church fellowship a couple of weeks ago. They are a great couple who have already become such a blessing to our congregation. If you haven t had a chance to meet them yet, I hope you will take the time soon. Several other individuals and families have joined our church or become active participants in our worship, fellowship, and service in recent months. What a great blessing to be able to form new bonds of Christian brotherhood and sisterhood! Watching seeds sprout. The first time we met Carson Foushee, he was a freshman at Elon University who was looking for a church to worship at while he was at college. Over his four years, Carson became not only a worship attender but a singer in our choir and leader in our youth ministry. This past Sunday night, in our Elon Roundtable session, the church voted to form an ordination committee to meet with Carson and bring a recommendation before the church regarding ordaining him into Christian ministry. What an amazing opportunity! Moving towards the Promised Land. Also at our Roundtable meeting, the Stewardship Committee reported that we were getting off to a good start with our Debt Free in 13 campaign. A little more than a month into the campaign, we have raised over $32,000 that has been or will be applied directly to the principal of the loan. There are signs all over the church tracing our progress in putting aside this burden. What a great start! Feeding the hungry. During their Souper Bowl emphasis, the RA s collected over 200 items that were donated to a local food pantry. Part of our basic service in the name of Christ is to feed the hungry, and what a great opportunity to do so. Thanks to our RA s for their hard work! Spreading the Word of God. Many of you participated in the You ve Got the Time initiative last year, when we dedicated 40 days to listening to the New Testament. As part of that effort, we took up a collection to support the recording the New Testament in the heart language of unreached people groups. I got a letter today saying that 482 churches, including ours, have participated in the initiative so far, donating over $220,000 to provide recordings for millions of people all over the world to hear the gospel in their own language. God is doing good things, and He is inviting us to be a part of what He is accomplishing. That is something that we can and should rejoice over! Mark

Youth News Just a Thought Over the past few weeks, Luke has become obsessed with the Bible. Every night before bed time, he gets to choose which two or three stories he wants to read. Number 1 on his list is his children's Bible. Of course, he has his favorite stories - the darkness at Creation, God making Adam and Eve, the story of Noah, the story of Mary and Joseph and the birth of Jesus, and now even John the Baptist. It seems like he can never get enough. This obsession of Luke's has caused me to take a step back and look at my own life. If I had a free five or ten minutes to read anything, what would I choose? The newspaper? The updates on Facebook? The latest fiction novel? Or like Luke, would I choose the Bible? I can honestly say that most of the time the Bible is on the bottom of the list - one that I never get around to. The things that we can learn from a two year old. So I ask the question to you: what is your choice in reading?
