Glory and Greatness (Mark 10:35-45)

Seven Things I Learned from Mom 1. The dignity of hard work. 2. The power of prayer. 3. The habit of daily Bible reading. 4. Reading at a young age. 5. Marriage is worth fighting for. 6. Good parents make mistakes. 7. Finish well.

Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came over and spoke to him. Teacher, they said, we want you to do us a favor. 36 What is your request? he asked. 37 They replied, When you sit on your glorious throne, we want to sit in places of honor next to you, one on your right and the other on your left. - Mark 10:35-37 (NLT)

James and John 1. Their father is Zebedee, a successful fisherman. 2. Their mother is Solome, a leading ministry supporter. 3. Their cousin is Jesus. 4. Their nicknames are the Sons of Thunder. 5. Their error is a sense of entitlement and self-advancement. Mark 9 They were eyewitnesses of the transfiguration. Mark 10 They asked for positions of glory in the Kingdom. Matthew 20 Their mother is also instigating the request.

It s not our children s sin that is in the way of good parenting; it s our tendency to make parenting about our little kingdom of wants, needs, and desires, and our tendency to want our children to serve the purposes of our kingdom rather than submit to the purposes of God s kingdom. -Paul David Tripp Parenting: 14 Gospel Principles That Can Radically Change Your Family

But Jesus said to them, You don t know what you are asking! Are you able to drink from the bitter cup of suffering I am about to drink? Are you able to be baptized with the baptism of suffering I must be baptized with? 39 Oh yes, they replied, we are able! Then Jesus told them, You will indeed drink from my bitter cup and be baptized with my baptism of suffering. 40 But I have no right to say who will sit on my right or my left. God has prepared those places for the ones he has chosen. 41 When the ten other disciples heard what James and John had asked, they were indignant. - Mark 10:38-41 (NLT)

We must picture hell as a state where everyone is perpetually concerned about his own dignity and advancement, where everyone has a grievance, and where everyone lives with the deadly serious passions of envy, self-importance, and resentment. - C.S. Lewis

Mark 8:31 The Son of Man must suffer and be rejected he will be killed. Mark 9:31 - The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of his enemies he will be killed. Mark 10:33 In Jerusalem the Son of Man is going to be sentenced to die. Peter reprimanded Jesus. The disciples argue about who is the greatest. John and James ask to sit next to His glorious throne. The other ten are indignant.

So Jesus called them together and said, You know that the rulers in this world lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them. 43 But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of everyone else. 45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many. - Mark 10:42-45 (NLT)

True spiritual leadership springs not from a desire to rule but from a passion to serve. This exotic grace is not native to most of us, but the Master equated it with greatness. - J. Oswald Sanders

In the Kingdom of God, service is not a stepping-stone to nobility: it is nobility, the only kind of nobility that is recognized. - T.W. Manson
