The Ninth Sunday after Pentecost August 06, 2017 9:00 a.m. Gathering (Please stand.) INVOCATION In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. OPENING SENTENCES Through Christ we are heirs of the gifts given long ago to the Israelites. For the gift of our adoption into the household of God, we thank You, O Lord! For the gift of God s glorious presence with us in Jesus, we adore You, O Lord! For the covenants God made with us, especially the covenant of forgiveness in Christ, we praise You, O Lord! For the Law of God, which guides us and points us to Christ, we worship You, O Lord! For freedom to praise and adore our giving God in worship, we praise You, O Lord! For the gracious promises of God, fulfilled in Jesus, we adore You, O Lord! For the patriarchs, whose struggles with faith teach us the way of following God, we thank You, O Lord! pg. 1

CONFESSION If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (Silence for reflection on God s Word and for self-examination). Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word and deed. By what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and enteral punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. FORGIVENESS Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. HYMN Cleanse Me (Search Me, O God) from TOSB Verse 1 Search me O God and know my heart today Try me O Savior know my thoughts I pray See if there be some wicked way in me Cleanse me from every sin and set me free Verse 2 I praise You Lord for cleansing me from sin Fulfill Thy Word and make me pure within Fill me with fire where once I burned with shame Grant my desire to magnify Your Name pg. 2

You have adopted us as Your children. You are gloriously present with us in all of life. You established covenants You kept through Jesus. You give us Your Word of abiding truth. You provide opportunity to worship You. You lavish upon us promises full of hope and joy. You established patriarchs to live by faith as examples to us. You give us Your Son, by whose death and resurrection our lives are made new. Help us to receive these gifts with joy, that we may love You deeply and serve our neighbors with love, through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. THE SHARING OF THE PEACE (Please be seated.) pg. 3

The Service of the Word THE CHILDREN S MESSAGE THE OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Isaiah 55:1-5 (Come, eat, and drink without cost.) Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. 2 Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food. 3 Incline your ear, and come to me; hear, that your soul may live; and I will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love for David. 4 Behold, I made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander for the peoples. 5 Behold, you shall call a nation that you do not know, and a nation that did not know you shall run to you, because of the LORD your God, and of the Holy One of Israel, for he has glorified you. Lector: This is the Word of our Lord. Thanks be to God. PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm 136:1-9, 23-26 Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good, for His steadfast love endures forever. Give thanks to the God of gods, for His steadfast love endures forever. Give thanks to the Lord of lords, to Him who alone does great wonders, pg. 4

to Him who by understanding made the heavens, to Him who spread out the earth above the waters, to Him who made the great lights, the sun to rule over the day, the moon and stars to rule over the night, for His steadfast love endures forever. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. EPISTLE Romans 9:1-5 (Paul anguishes over the people of Israel.) I am speaking the truth in Christ I am not lying; my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit 2 that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. 3 For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my kinsmen according to the flesh. 4 They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises. 5 To them belong the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ, who is God over all, blessed forever. Amen.. Lector: This is the Word of our Lord. Thanks be to God. pg. 5

HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 14:13-21 (The Bread of Life feeds five thousand.) 13 Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a desolate place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. 14 When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick. 15 Now when it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, This is a desolate place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves. 16 But Jesus said, They need not go away; you give them something to eat. 17 They said to him, We have only five loaves here and two fish. 18 And he said, Bring them here to me. 19 Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. 20 And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. 21 And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children. This is the Gospel of our Lord. Thanks be to God. (Please be seated.) HYMN At the Lamb s High Feast We Sing LSB 633 (selected verses) Verse 1 At the Lamb s high feast we sing Praise to our victorious King, Who has washed us in the tide Flowing from His pierced side. Alleluia! Verse 2 Praise we Him whose love divine Gives His sacred blood for wine, Gives His body for the feast - Christ the Victim, Christ the Priest. Alleluia! Verse 5 Mighty Victim from the sky, Hell s fierce pow rs beneath You lie; You have conquered in the fight, You have brought us life and light. Alleluia! pg. 6

THE APOSTLES CREED (Please be seated.) OFFERING (Please stand.) PRAYER OF THE CHURCH I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He 0descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. pg. 7

The Service of the Table THE GREAT THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. 2 Timothy 4:22 And also with you. Lift up your hearts. [Colossians 3:1] We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. [Psalm 136] It is right to give Him thanks and praise. It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who by His death on the cross and His resurrection from the grave feeds both our bodies and souls with all we need to live abundant life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing: SANCTUS (LSB 178) Holy, holy, holy Lord Lord God of pow r and might; Heaven and earth are full of Your glory. This do in remembrance of Me. pg. 8

In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. PROCLAMATION OF CHRIST As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord s death until He comes. 1 Corinthians 11:26 Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. INVITATION TO COMMUNION Come, let us eat, for now the feast is spread. Our Lord s body let us take together.
