Lenten Regulations Fasting Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Fasting means to eat only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one s needs, but they should not equal another full meal. Abstinence Catholics over the age of 14 are to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all the Fridays of Lent. Abstinence forbids the use of meat, but not of eggs, milk products or condiments made of animal fat. SACRED HEART CHOIR: We will have choir at Sacred Heart on Saturday, March 4. Practice in the church basement at 3:00 and Mass time is 4:00. Anyone can come join us! Please put it on your calendar! Next week, we will take up the 134 th annual National Black and Indian Mission Collection. Our support of this collection helps build the Church in African American, Native American, and Alaska Native communities from coast to coast. Ladies Luncheon Retreat An Attitude of Gratitude Sister Mary Weidner, OSB, Spiritual Center Director of St. Benedict s Monastery in St. Joseph, MN will conduct the retreat on Saturday, March 4 th at St. Mary s in Willmar. Our church is handicap accessible. We hope to see you there! Minnesota Food Share March Campaign End Hunger The March Food Drive Campaign is just around the corner. Often people assume that families want to continually use the food shelf. Contrary to the perception, a vast majority of the usage comes from families that have a person in the household working. A total of 1,247 individuals used the food shelf this past year with some of those individuals using it monthly. The food shelf distributed 90,635 pounds of food in 2016. Every person that we serve lives in Swift County. Items needed: canned vegetables, fruit and chicken, peanut butter, spaghetti sauce, mashed potatoes, pancake mix, chili, soup, syrup, cereal, beans, oatmeal, mustard, ketchup, tuna, juice, pasta, jelly, mac & cheese, toilet paper, deodorant, toothpaste, paper towels, shampoo/conditioner, toothbrushes. Cash donations are accepted and can be sent to PO Box 321, Benson, MN 56215. Various opportunities will be available for almsgiving during Lent through contributions to the second collections on the six weekends of this preparation time. The proceeds from each weekend s second collection in each St. Isidore the Farmer AFC church will be designated for the following causes: March 4/5 Sisters of Mary Morningstar March 11/12 Mercy Fund (respond to individual smaller, one-time, financial needs not covered by public programs; administered by AFC pastor and office staff) March 18/19 Swift County Food Shelf March 25/26 Teen Talk Retreat (defray costs of Teen Talk weekend retreat at the Broom Tree Retreat Center) April 1/2 Mercy Fund April 8/9 Seminarians (help cover some of their education expenses)

Everyone is invited for food, fun and fellowship! Bishop Lucker Lecture Thursday, March 23, 2017, 7 pm at the Church of St. Catherine in Redwood Falls. Featured speaker will be Helen Alvare, Professor of Law at George Mason University of Law and former director of the USCCB s Pro-Life Activities, and current consultant to the USCCB. The theme will be Rise of Sexual Expressionism in the Law and the Decline of the Vulnerable. In the past 50 years especially, the federal government in all its branches has valorized adult sexual expression divorced from children and indifferent to marriage. While this undermines the wellbeing of all Americans, it strikes women, children, and the poor most dramatically because of their different opportunities, preferences, and constraints. How did this happen and what can we do about it? Following the Bishop Lucker Lecture will be the presentation of the Diocesan Distinguished Service Awards for 2017. A social will conclude the evening. This event is free and open to the public. Internationally acclaimed choral group, The Rose Ensemble, is pleased to present Musique et Masqueray on Friday, March 24 at 7:30 pm in the beautiful Saint Francis Catholic Church, Benson. Honoring of the life and legacy of Emmanuel Masqueray (1861-1917), the famed French architect who designed Saint Francis church as well as the Cathedral of Saint Paul and Basilica of Saint Mary in Minneapolis, this concert of 17 th - and 18 th -century Lenten choral music from France features twelve singers and three guest musicians performing on Baroque instruments such as the theorbo and viola da gamba. In addition to the concert performance, there will be a pre-concert talk on the history and architecture of the church at 6:25 pm by Professor Alan Lathrop of the University of Minnesota. APPLETON NEW CHURCH TABLES... DONATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED to help pay for twenty (20) new tables for our church basement. The new tables will be a high quality, light weight, 60 inch round table that will seat eight (8) people. The new tables will replace the old heavy tables. Please write check to St. John s Church. Put the DONATION IN AN ENVELOPE MARKED TABLES and drop the envelope in the collection or bring to the church office. The old tables can be purchased at a later date. Last week, Ann Cofell, the director for Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid in Willmar (and serving immigrants in Catholic Charities outreach offices in Marshall and Montevideo) presented information to clergy, diocesan and parish staff and people from the community immediately affected by directives of the President, Homeland Security and related regional and local law enforcement agencies. She also shared very timely information related to the January 26 Executive order on what to do or what to expect if a legal summons, a home visit, or other legal concerns are immediately at hand. Mid Minnesota Legal Aid has provided immigration legal services in partnership with Catholic Charities of the Diocese of New Ulm since 2012.
