Zion Lutheran Church & School
Thirteenth Sunday After Pentecost September 3, 2017 8:00 a.m. Zion Lutheran Church exists to proclaim the love of God in Jesus Christ, to touch others in need with his love, and to express that love in our lives together. Mission Statement of Zion Lutheran Church AS WE GATHER Jesus let nothing deter Him from going to the cross; no one could change His divinely mandated destiny. His sacrifice is the power that enables us to follow where He leads, no matter how difficult our own crosses may seem. Even when Jeremiah doubted the Lord's intentions, God promised to deliver and redeem him. In response to our Savior's redemption, we are able to lose ourselves in living the Christian life St. Paul outlines in the Epistle reading. WELCOME TO ZION! We are glad to have you worship with us! May the Holy Spirit speak to your heart and mind as the Gospel is proclaimed. We welcome you to our family if you are new here and look forward to seeing you again. Please help us to get to know you by completing a Visitor Card found in the hymnal rack and placing it in the offering plate. Blessings on your worship. PRELUDE - Aria "Bist Du Bei Mir" BWV 508 J. S. Bach (1685-1750) + HYMN OF INVOCATION (The congregation stands to sing) Lord of Glory, You Have Bought Us LSB 851 sts. 1 to 2
INVOCATION In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. -/ CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION (sit or kneel) Gracious God, We have tended to our physical, emotional, and social well-being as if our salvation depended on our own efforts. In the process we have failed to love You with our whole heart, soul, and mind; we have failed to love our neighbors as ourselves. We ask for Your forgiveness, knowing, believing, and confessing that for Christ's sake You offer it freely. By Your Holy Spirit, help us to lose ourselves daily as we follow our Savior the source of eternal life. (Silence for reflections of the heart.) Almighty God in His mercy, has given His Son to die for you, and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As your called and ordained servant of the Word, I therefore forgive you all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. + HYMN OF INVOCATION (continues) Lord of Glory, You Have Bought Us LSB 851 sts. 3 to 4 SHARING THE PEACE The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you. (Share the Peace of the Lord with those around you) FIRST READING Jeremiah 15:15-21 (Although Jeremiah thinks he is faultless, God promises to defend him if he repents.) 15 O LORD, you know; remember me and visit me, and take vengeance for me on my persecutors. In your forbearance take me not away; know that for your sake I bear reproach. 16 Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart, for I am called by your name, O LORD, God of hosts. 17 I did not sit in the company of revelers, nor did I rejoice; I sat alone, because your hand was upon me, for you had filled me with indignation.
18 Why is my pain unceasing, my wound incurable, refusing to be healed? Will you be to me like a deceitful brook, like waters that fail? 19 Therefore thus says the LORD: If you return, I will restore you, and you shall stand before me. If you utter what is precious, and not what is worthless, you shall be as my mouth. They shall turn to you, but you shall not turn to them. 20 And I will make you to this people a fortified wall of bronze; they will fight against you, but they shall not prevail over you, for I am with you to save you and deliver you, declares the LORD. 21 I will deliver you out of the hand of the wicked, and redeem you from the grasp of the ruthless. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. SECOND READING Romans 12:9-21 (Paul outlines how the person of faith ought to live.) 9 Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. 10 Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. 11 Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. 12 Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. 13 Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality. 14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. 17 Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. 18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. 19 Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord. 20 To the contrary, if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head. 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. - HYMN OF THE DAY (The congregation stands to sing) Come, Follow Me, the Savior Spake LSB 688 sts. 1 to 3 HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 16:21-28 (Jesus promises that losing one's life for Him means truly finding it.) 21 From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. 22 And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, Far be it from you, Lord! This shall
never happen to you. 23 But he turned and said to Peter, Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man. 24 Then Jesus told his disciples, If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul? 27 For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done. 28 Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, O Christ. - HYMN OF THE DAY (continues) Come, Follow Me, the Savior Spake LSB 688 sts. 4 to 5 - SERMON Pastor Lenny PROCLAMATION OF FAITH NICENE CREED I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us PEOPLE and for our salvation came down from heaven; and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. -/ PRAYER OF THE CHURCH (sit or kneel) (Each petition ends with let us pray to the Lord, the congregation responds Lord, have mercy. )

Agnus Dei -HOLY COMMUNION By participating in Holy Communion, you are acknowledging that you are baptized, that you acknowledge your sinfulness and believe that, through this Sacrament, our Lord offers himself for the forgiveness of sins and spiritual nourishment and refreshment. Your participation is a statement that you accept what the Scriptures teach: that the real presence of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ are received in faith together with the bread and wine of Holy Communion. If this is your faith, we welcome you to the Lord s Table. If you will not be communing, we invite you forward to receive a blessing. Please fold your arms across your chest as a sign that you desire to receive a spoken blessing rather than the bread and wine. Please note: Communion grape juice is purple in color and communion wine is clear in color.
