REFLECTIONS It is a wonderfully liberating experience when the desire to please God overtakes the desire to please ourselves, and when love for others displaces self-love. True freedom is not freedom from responsibility to God and others in order to live for ourselves, but freedom from ourselves in order to live for God and others. John Stott God has a story for you. As you listen to the Word of God, and allow the Holy Spirit to plant it in your heart, you will hear the story. It is in the hearing that we learn of the love that casts out our fears. And when we obey that voice of love, we allow God's grace to live and act through us. God's life in us this is true freedom. Rose Marie Miller Consequently, liberation in the Bible is always seen as a change of regime, or jurisdiction, from the false dominion to the true, from serving Pharaoh to serving Yahweh, from serving sin and death to serving God. From the point of view of the Enlightenment, the biblical idea of freedom is paradoxical a freedom of the one who serves the true master. Lesslie Newbigin

J ef f Pa te, Pa stor The Sixth Sunday of Easter Leaders In Worship: Assisting Elder Lowell Urban Nancy Allen, piano WELCOME & PRELUDE Program all communication devices to be in silent mode. Thank you. Please use this time for prayer and meditation as we prepare to go before the living God in worship. P R A I S E CALL TO WORSHIP: from Hebrews 1; Luke 4; 2 Corinthians 3:17,18 Pastor: Long ago God spoke by the prophets but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, who God anointed to proclaim good news to the poor. All: He was sent to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor. Pastor: Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. All: And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. Pastor: Come and hear the Word that liberates and transforms. Come and enjoy the Spirit s presence and behold the Lord s glory. Come, let us worship. HYMN OF PRAISE: 2 O Worship the King PRAYER OF PRAISE AND THE LORD'S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever, Amen. 2

C O N F E S S I O N SCRIPTURE READING: Proverbs 3:19-26 19 20 The Lord by wisdom founded the earth; by understanding he established the heavens; by 21 his knowledge the deeps broke open, and the clouds drop down the dew. My son, do not 22 lose sight of these keep sound wisdom and discretion, and they will be life for your soul 23 and adornment for your neck. Then you will walk on your way securely, and your foot will 24 not stumble. If you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be 25 26 sweet. Do not be afraid of sudden terror or of the ruin of the wicked, when it comes, for the Lord will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being caught. Leader: All: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! CORPORATE CONFESSION OF SIN: All: Almighty God, we confess how hard it is to be your people. You have called us to be the church, to continue the mission of Jesus Christ to our lonely and confused world. Yet we acknowledge we are more apathetic than active, isolated than involved, callous than compassionate, obstinate than obedient, legalistic than loving. Gracious Lord, have mercy upon us and forgive our sins. Remove the obstacles preventing us from being your representatives to a broken world. Awaken our hearts to the promised gift of your indwelling Spirit. This we pray in Jesus' powerful name. Amen. SILENT REFLECTION AND CONFESSION WORDS OF ASSURANCE & PEACE OF GOD: based on Romans 6 Pastor: Lift your heads and your hearts to hear the Good News! Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. All: For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. Pastor: For one who has died has been set free from sin. All: Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. Pastor: For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. The peace of Christ be with you all. People: And also with you. HYMN: 461 Not What My Hands Have Done 3

C O M M I T M E N T OFFERTORY PRAYER OFFERTORY Presentation of tithes & offerings DOXOLOGY (Hymnal, page 731) AFFIRMATION OF FAITH: Nicene Creed Leader: Christian, what do you believe? People: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds; God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God; begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made. Who, for us and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; He suffered and was buried; and the third day He rose again, according to the Scriptures; and ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of the Father; and He shall come again, with glory, to judge the quick and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and Giver of Life; who proceeds from the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified; who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins; and I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. P R E A C H I N G O F T H E W O R D SCRIPTURE: Acts 16:22-34 22 The crowd joined in attacking them, and the magistrates tore the garments off them and gave 23 orders to beat them with rods. And when they had inflicted many blows upon them, they threw 24 them into prison, ordering the jailer to keep them safely. Having received this order, he put them 25 into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks. About midnight Paul and Silas were 26 praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them, and suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken. And immediately all the 27 doors were opened, and everyone's bonds were unfastened. When the jailer woke and saw that the prison doors were open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, supposing that the 28 prisoners had escaped. But Paul cried with a loud voice, Do not harm yourself, for we are all 29 here. And the jailer called for lights and rushed in, and trembling with fear he fell down before 30 31 Paul and Silas. Then he brought them out and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they 32 said, Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household. And they spoke 33 the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. And he took them the same hour of 34 the night and washed their wounds; and he was baptized at once, he and all his family. Then he brought them up into his house and set food before them. And he rejoiced along with his entire household that he had believed in God. SERMON: Freed! Rev. Let the skies declare your glory; let the land and seas rejoice. (Chorus) Chorus: You re the author of creation, You re the Lord of ev ry man, and Your cry of love rings out across the lands. 2. Yet You left the gaze of angels, came to seek and save the lost, And exchanged the joy of Heaven for the anguish of a cross. With a prayer You fed the hungry, with a word You calmed the sea; Yet how silently You suffered, that the guilty may go free. (Chorus) 3. With a shout You rose victorious, wresting vict ry from the grave, And ascended into Heaven, leading captives in Your way.
