MODULE 1 Class Title: Creation of Man Aim of the lesson: To understand the Islamic & scientific views about how mankind came into being Category: Islam & Science Lesson Format: Power point presentation with discussion Greeting to students) Assalam alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh (Taooz) Aoodhubillahi min AsShaytanir Rajeem (Tasmiyah) Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem (Du a) Rabbish rahli sadri wa yassirli amri wahlul uqdatum millisani yafqahu qawli (Surah At Ta-Ha 20: Verse 25-28) Slide 1: Our topic for today is man. Have you ever wondered how you came into this earth? How did man come into this earth; how was he created? Do you ever think about these things? People have many different ideas about what and where man came from. We will discuss some of these ideas today. Slides 2 and 3: Did man just arrive on earth; did he just pop up from somewhere or just happened to be there? Did he just come out of the blue? Did a stork bring him or did some baby train drop him off? Slide 4: Or do babies come from manholes, get packed into jam jars and are delivered to their parents? Slide 5: Or did man evolve, as Darwin s Theory suggests with its concept of evolution? Slide 6: Darwin s Theory was put forward by Charles Darwin in the 19 th century; it says that man came into being through a process of evolution that took millions of years and man evolved from lower forms of animal life and that these lower forms of animal life sprung from a single cell, and gradually developed into man. 1

Slides 7 and 8: So, according to Darwin s Theory, all life on earth began from a single cell and this single cell is called Prokaryote. We will just quickly run through the basic timeline showing how this single cell gradually evolved into what is now known as mankind, according to what the Darwinists say. Slide 9: 3.8 billion years ago there were only simple cells, called Prokaryotes, on Earth, and then, 3 billion years ago, photosynthesis took place, and 2 billion years ago complex cells, called Eukaryotes, came into being. And then 1 billion years ago multi-cellular life developed on Earth Slides 10 and11: According to this timeline 600 million years ago life evolved to produce simple animals followed by the arachnids, the crustaceans and the arthropods. Slide 12: 550 million years ago more complex animals came into being, and then the proto-amphibians and the fish came into being 500 million years. Slide 13: 475 million years ago land plants developed, followed by insects and seeds 400 million years, which were followed by amphibians 360 million years ago, and then reptiles came into being 300 million year ago. Slide 14: Just 200 million years ago mammals came into being. Slide 15: 150 million years ago the birds took to the air. 130 million years ago plants started flowering and then all the dinosaurs died 65 million years ago. So there go all the movies about dinosaurs eating men or hunting cavemen for prey, because the dinosaurs died even before man had come into being, according to this theory. 2.5 million years ago man s early ancestors made an appearance; the apes come into being. 2

Slide 16 and 17: Man has been around for only the last 200 thousand years. So this is how we evolved from lower life forms. Slides 18-20: So is this what our ancestors looked like? No! A very famous Darwinist, Richard Dawkins was asked to participate in a public debate about Darwinism, but he refused because in his heart in knows he is wrong. So what is the truth? Slide 21: Allah (swt) says in the Holy Qur an, Does not man remember that we created him when he was naught? (Surah Maryam 19: Verse 68) Allah (swt) is telling us that He created man out of nothing. Nothing existed, and then Allah (swt) created man Slide 22: We find details in the Holy Qur an about how Allah (swt) informed the angels of His intention of creating man. Allah (swt) said, Verily I am going to place mankind, generations after generations on earth. (Surah Al-Baqarah 2: Verse 30) Slide 23: And then Allah (swt) also informed the angels about how He was going to create man and what they were supposed to do once Allah (swt) had created man. Allah (swt) says, Remember when your Lord said to the angels, I am going to create a man (Adam)from sounding clay of altered black smooth mud, so when I have fashioned him completely and breathed into him (Adam (as), the soul which I created for him then fall you down, prostrating yourselves unto him. (Surah Al-Hijr 15: Verse 28-30) Allah (swt) told the angels that He was going to create man from mud, clay and black mud and then they were supposed to bow to Adam (as). And the angels did bow down, except for Shaytan {Satan}. He refused to obey Allah because of his arrogance. He was proud of being a jinn. 3

Slide 24: So, according to the Qur an, man was created by Allah (swt) Himself. Man is an original species and, unlike the evolutionists, we do not believe that man has evolved from apes. Slide 25: The Prophet (pbuh) informed us, Allah (swt) created Adam (as) making him 60 cubits, that is about 30 meters tall any person who will enter Paradise will resemble Adam (as) in appearance and figure. People have been decreasing in stature since Adam (as) s creation. [Bukhari] How high is this room? Maybe around 10-11 feet which is roughly about three meters, so Adam (as) was about the height of a nine or ten storey building and we ve been getting shorter and shorter since then. Slides 26-28: Now once Adam s (as) body was made, Allah (swt) let it dry. The Prophet (pbuh) said, Allah Ta ala has created Adam (as) from a handful of soil which He had gathered from all over the earth and that is how children of Adam came according to the colour and nature of the earth. There are white amongst them and red and black and cross colours and there are those amongst them who are of bad nature and good nature, soft as well as harsh and in between. [Abu Dawud] So you see, there are so many various different skin colours; some people are black, some are white, some are yellow skinned, some are red skinned and some have brown skins, and we all know that skin colour varies according to the region we live in. And you must have also heard that people from certain countries are very friendly while those from certain other countries are very snobbish, and people from some countries have got very flexible bodies. This is all because of the different textures and colors of the soil that been collected from all over the earth to make Adam (as); Allah (swt) asked the angels to collect all the various kinds of soils. Have you seen the different colours of soil? Have you noticed how the soil colours keep changing from yellows to reds, to grays, to blacks, to browns? According to some research, it has been found that a single couple is capable of producing sixteen different kinds of combinations of offspring with varying features like skin colour, the size of the eyes and the nose; there are sixteen different possibilities of the appearance of the offspring from a single set of parents. Slide 29: The Qur an tells us, It is He who has created you from a single person Adam and He has 4

created from him his wife {Hawwa} in order that he might enjoy the pleasure of living with her (Surah Al-A raf 7: Verse 189) Then many things happened in between; we are not going into the details about how Adam (as) and Hawwa were living in Jannah and then Shaytan made them eat the forbidden fruit from the forbidden tree and then Allah (swt) sent them all down to the earth, but, according to the ayat I quoted a few minutes ago, Allah (swt) created mankind to be sent to Earth; man was created for the purpose of being sent to earth. So it was not Bibi Hawwa s fault; it was for this purpose that man was created, and Allah (swt) had already informed the angels. The only reason Allah (swt) kept them in Jannah {heaven} was to introduce them to their enemy, Shaytan. That is exactly what happened: Shaytan made them eat the forbidden fruit so they knew that Shaytan was their enemy. Slide 30: And then they came on Earth and they started living here. We know that Adam (as) and Hawwa had their first set of twins, Cain (Qabeel) and his sister and then they another set of twins, Able (Habeel) and his sister. In those days, getting married to a sibling who was not one s twin was allowed because the earth had to be populated, so Qabeel was married to Habeel s sister and Habeel was married to Qabeel s sister. And then they had kids and Bibi Hawwa had more kids and that s how population stated spreading on the Earth and eventually that s how we came into being. Slide 31: Let s watch this video clip and we ll know exactly how we were born. So basically life begins in the womb as a single cell, and all of us were a tiny little cell once upon a time, even smaller than a grain of salt. And then, after this cell got fertilized, it started dividing; it divided into two cells which divided into four which divided into eight which divided into sixteen cells and then so on. And gradually these cells became a lump of flesh and this lump of flesh took the shape of something like a baby, a leech shape and then arms started growing and legs started growing and eyes started growing and it grew bigger and bigger, much bigger than what it was initially. And then Allah (swt) performed a string of miracles and eventually the human being came into being from a single drop of water. Allah (swt) says in the Holy Qur an, Does a man think he will be left uncontrolled without any purpose, was he not once a drop of ejected semen, then he became a clot, so He created and fashioned him and made him into two sexes, male and female. Is He who does this not able to bring the dead to life? (Surah Al- Qiyamah 75: Verses 36-40). 5

Allah (swt) is asking us why we don t believe that He is going to bring us back to life on the Last day; He created us from nothing, then why would it be impossible for Him to bring us back to life from our remains? So, it s not impossible, it s quite simple for Allah (swt). Slides 32 and 33: So what happens is that the fertilized cell passes through the fallopian tube and reaches the womb. Once in the womb, it starts dividing; the divided cells start forming groups and connect with the part which they are supposed to grow into. For example, the cells that are supposed to form the legs connect to the part where they are supposed to grow and form the leg. The same thing happens to the cells that are supposed to form the skull and the cells that form the fingers and the cells that form the eyes; they go to their specific designated area and attach themselves and start growing. And who gives them these orders, how do they know where they have to go? Science cannot answer these questions; it s Allah (swt) who tells them what to do. This is the skull of a four week old embryo and these are the sockets where the eyes will eventually grow, and gradually, once the sockets are formed, the cells that are supposed to grow into eyes start growing inside the socket and that is how the eye ball starts developing. Once it has reached its full size it stops growing. It does not keep growing and growing and growing. So who s telling the cells when to start growing and when to stop growing? Allah (swt). The cells that are supposed to be the ears attach themselves to the skull where they have to grow and they grow up to a certain size and then they stop growing. They don t keep on growing and growing. They stop once they have reached their particular size; isn t that miraculous? Now Allah (swt) says in the Qur an, and God has brought you out from the wombs of your mothers while you know nothing and He gave you learning, sights and hearts that you may give thanks (to Allah (swt)). (Surah An-Nahl 16: Verse 78) So keeping in mind what we have been created from and how we have been created, how can we be arrogant? Once it was thought that the bones and the flesh grow together but latest research has found out that first the skeleton grows and then the flesh comes on it. Allah (swt) has already informed us, We then formed the drop into a clot and the clot into a lump, from the lump into bones and clothed the bones with flesh and then brought him into being as another creature. (Surah Al-Mu minun 23: Verse 14) 6

This was already in the Holy Qur an more than 1400 years ago and science has only recently, in the past hundred years discovered all this. How was it possible for the Prophet (pbuh) to know all this when there was no ultrasound, no x-ray, and no device to see what was happening inside the stomach? So, all those claims that the Qur an is, na oodubillah, a creation of fiction and a figment of the imagination of the Prophet (pbuh) are clearly wrong. There are many scientists who accepted Islam once they found out about this ayat {verse} in the Qur an, after this fact was discovered. So you see this is how the baby develops and it starts growing, getting bigger and bigger and then the time comes for the baby s arrival on this earth and then this cute little baby is born. This is how we all came into this world. Slide 34: In the Holy Qur an Allah (swt) says, We made from water everything. (Surah Al-Anbiya 21: Verse31) And then in another place in the Holy Qur an Allah (swt) says, He who has made perfects everything, He has created and He started the creation of man from clay. (Surah As-Sajdah 32: Verse 8) Again Allah (swt) says, When he made his progeny from the extract of an insignificant fluid. (Surah As-Sajdah 32: Verse 9), So there are different things mentioned in the Holy Qur an in different places about what man has been created from: water, clay, insignificant fluid etc. Slide 35: Let s analyze an example: in order to make a cup of tea, what do you need? We need hot water, milk, a tea bag and sugar. Slide 36: In the same way that all these ingredients make man, the original man had been created from dust, water and clay and his progeny from the insignificant fluid that has been mentioned in the Holy Qur an. Slides 37 and 38: So we Muslims do not believe that humans evolved randomly from apes, the life of human beings began with the creation of two people, a male and a female named Adam (a.s) and 7

Bibi Hawwa. Man was created from an origin of his own species and it is not correct that he evolved from a species of apes or monkeys as was claimed by Darwin. Slide 39: Allah (swt) says in the Holy Qur an, Oh human kind we created you from a single pair of a male and female and made you into nations and tribes so that you may know each other. Verily the most honoured amongst you in the sight of Allah is the one who is the most righteous of you. And Allah has full knowledge, is well acquainted. (Surah Al-Hujurat 49: Verse 13) What Allah (swt) is saying is that there are so many different kinds of skin colours, different skin textures and different varieties in the kinds of people all over the world for the purpose of identification and recognition. Just so you have a sense of belonging to a certain area and the recognition that you belong to that area. And it s not your beautiful face that counts; it is not our fair colour that counts, it is not how pretty we look and the beautiful dress that we wear that Allah (swt) is going to see; what is Allah (swt) going to see? Why have we been created? Allah (swt) is going to see what we do. The best and the most honoured is the one who is the most righteous; what matters is how we treat others, how we talk to others, how we treat those who are less fortunate than us. It s really easy to talk about but not as easy to apply in practical life; just think of the way we treat our servants, how do we talk to them? How do we treat our drivers, our maids; what do we expect from them? We need to remember that all of us have been created from the same thing: that same single cell, that same single drop of water; we are all the same in front of Allah (swt). This is what we learn in the congregational prayers when everybody is standing in the same row regardless of whether they re a prince, a king or a beggar; they all stand in the same row, shoulder to shoulder, feet to feet and are all equal in front of Allah (swt). We will all be judged equally on the last day and it is what each person does, how he behaves, that is going to count. So you see, it s not how we look but what we do that Allah (swt) is going to see. And our responsibility is to be thankful to Allah (swt), be grateful to Him for giving us all that we have and making us amongst the ones who share it with those who are less fortunate. And those who are ignorant of the reality about their own creation, their origins, are the ones who are ignorant about their purpose of life as well. This is exactly why Darwin s theory gained so much popularity, because once you forget what your origins are, once you forget the meager tiny itsy bitsy cell you were, arrogance comes in. And once you start believing that you originated from a species of animals and apes then people start behaving like animals, they don t have to take responsibility for anything. Animals are not responsible for 8

their old parents, animals are not responsible for their young ones; they stop taking care about them at a very early stage, and animals don t have to take responsibility for doing anything. They don t have to go out and help other poor animals who are hungry and do not have a house to live in. So once Darwin s theory is accepted and the idea that you originated from animals is accepted, responsibility goes away. Remember that Allah (swt) told the angels that He is sending His khalifa {vicegerent}; khalifa means one who is responsible, the care taker; we are responsible for this earth, which is exactly why we are here. Slide 40: Allah (swt) says, That I have created the jinns and human kind only for my worship. (Surah Adh-Dhariyat 51: Verse 56) This does not mean that you sit on the prayer mat the whole day and you keep praying without doing anything else. Worship is not just sitting on the prayer mat and praying the whole day; every act that the Muslim does is worship; worship is everything that you do; eating, sleeping, going out to a party, visiting relatives and friends, studying, everything becomes worship. Everything becomes worship if you do it within the boundaries set by Allah (swt) and if you adopt the way of the Prophet (pbuh). Everything! Worship can be fun as well; going shopping can become worship when you recite the du a for entering a market place and if your intentions are clear i.e. you re not buying things to show off but you re buying them because of your needs and requirements. So everything that a Muslim does becomes worship, it s not just about reciting the Qur an and praying whole day. Worship is anything that you do when you adopt the way of the sunnah and you do it within limits set by Allah (swt). Slide 41: Okay, so we ll all remember what we are made of and we are going to be more polite and humble and help others and will not be arrogant because we were all once like that tiny grain of salt. (Du a for end of a gathering) Subhana Rabbika Rabbul Izzati amma yasifun wa salamun alal mursaleen, walhamdulillahi Rabbil alameen (Parting salutation to students) Assalam alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu 9
