How can we learn to be more patient? July 10 - Micah 6:6-8 // Colossians 3:12-15 A Life of Kindness The mark of a true follower of Christ Jesus will be life lived in kindness. Treating others as we would want to be treated is the path we are called to follow. July 17 - Ephesians 5:6-10 /// Philippians 2:3-8 Living in Goodness Goodness is definitely a fruit of the Spirit that produces a life of virtue in the person that stays close to Jesus. Do you live a life of goodness? How can it be done and what does it look like? July 24 - Galatians 5:22-25 /// Joshua 24:14-15 Being Faithful Faithfulness is also a fruit of the Holy Spirit. It is about being faithful in our relationship to God so that nothing else becomes an idol. But it also indicates how we live in faithfulness in relation to others. July 31 - Matthew 11:28-30 /// James 3:13-18 Being Gentle HOLY COMMUNION Our prayer should be, Lord, help me to be gentle in my action toward others. (Hebrews 11:6) There is a true story, during WWI, about a soldier who asked his commanding officer if he might go out into trenches to bring back one of his comrades who was lying seriously wounded. You can go, said the officer, but it s not worth it. Your friend is probably already dead, and you will throw your life way. But the man went. Somehow he managed to get to his friend, hoist him onto his shoulder, and bring him back to the trenches. On the way back he was also hit by enemy fire but he found his way to his regiment. He fell together with his friend into the bottom of the trench. Medics came to attend to them both but pronounced that his friend was dead. The officer looked compassionately at the wounded rescuer and then he said, I told you it wouldn t be worth it. Your friend is dead and now you are mortally wounded yourself. Yes, but it was worth it, sir, the young man answered. When I got to him he was still alive, and he said to me, Jim, I knew you d come. That is the faith we are called to have in our heavenly Father. We are called to believe in a Shepherd who never leaves his sheep; a Savior who is always willing to rescue; a Friend who is there for us in all times and places. Do you have this faith? Ask God to provide a greater faith in your life. One that believes, relies on, and trusts in a God who will never let you down! May God be with you, Pastor Dennis Bailey Please say The office will be closed July 4 th. Jesse Krauel Sue Prior In loving memory Jean Anneberg.

Friday night, July 1st --- We have a fun evening planned this Friday night! Starting at 6:30 p.m. with a meal of hot dogs and pulled chicken (please bring a salad or dessert) outside on the Main Street side of our church. We will play games and then watch a movie around 8:30 or 9 p.m. What fun! Bring lawn chairs or blankets and yard games, if you have them. Come for part of it or come for all of it! Vacation Bible School is Quickly Approaching... VBS is a big event at our church and July 17th through the 21st will soon be here. We hope to reach between 75 and 100 kids with the message about the love of Jesus. Everyday the kids will sing, watch videos, play games, and learn Bible stories while they have a great time. There is a pre-school level for kids to do age-appropriate learning projects and then the older group is for those up to leaving-5th-grade. It takes approximately 60 volunteers to cover all the arenas. There are those who prepare treats, those who shepherd kids from area to area, those who lead the play outside, and those who teach the Bible stories. This is just a portion of the list. If you can, please volunteer! We decorate our church like nobody else! It makes it fun and believable for the kids. Even the parents get into the theme. If you can fill a bag with newspapers, you can help turn our church into a cave. Bring your imagination and wear old clothes. Decorating will be going on all week from July 11th through the 15th. Do join the fun! In the near future, we would like to use texting as a way to send out reminders and alerts. It would be so convenient to send a parent a text saying their child did not get off the bus for UM Kids. If we had bad weather, texting would be a fast way for us to notify you that church has been cancelled. How about a quick heads up for the members that AD Council will meet at 7:30? Those are just a few of the ways we could use this technology to keep you informed. Please share with us your cell phone numbers so we could be in touch. And it works both ways. You can text us too. Coming soon!!! We offer scholarships to those families who can not afford to send their kids. Call this mission work. Plus it takes money to put on VBS for supplies, food and decorations. Please donate to VBS by marking VBS on your envelope or check s memo line. Thanks! This year we have two other churches who have their VBS scheduled the same week as ours. Please help us reach your neighborhood kids, grandkids, or your own kids! Reaching all we can is our mission.

Communion in July --- Communion will be Saturday evening and Sunday morning July 30 th & 31 st. Blood Drive --- Next LifeServe blood drive will be July 18 th from 12:30-5:15. It will be in a bus in our parking lot so that our Fellowship Hall can host our VBS. Food Pantry Summer needs --- Sometimes it is nice to hear that the donations we make really do touch the lives of people. This is a handwritten note from Lynette Johnson at the Society of St. Andrews... June 3, 2016 Dear sisters and brothers in Christ, Your caring hearts make all the difference! For the hungry families who will receive some of the 27,708 servings of fresh, healthy fruits and vegetables you are sharing through your $665.00 Advance gift to the Society of St. Andrew, your gift means they will go to school or work well fed. It means their chronic illness will be better managed through healthier eating, It means the light bill can be paid this month, because you've put nourishing food in their refrigerator All this, because you cared enough to give. You make this ministry possible. Thank You, Carroll First UMC!! With you in Christ s service, Lynette Johnson, Director of Church Relations. THEN...we heard from: Bread for the World. AND THEN this note of thanks from: Feed My Starving Children. Dear Friends, You are essential. Because of your selfless giving, the survival of children all around the world is ensured. Your gift of $400.00 made on 6/14 to FMSC will provide 1,818 meals for those who need it most. This is an incredible and precious blessing. This is what your Missions money does! The food pantry always thanks us for our donations. This month they are in need of: Canned Sloppy Joes, canned fruit, jelly or jam to go with the peanut butter, pancake mix and non-creamed kids-type soups. The grocery cart is by the front desk. When you shop, think of those who might go hungry Meetings Coming up --- ->Friends Breakfast, July 7 th, 9:30 a.m. at the Family Table. Community Events --- Free Meal at St. John s Lutheran Church July 13th, 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. Our sympathy is extended to Lance Nissen on the death of his grandfather. Call 712.792.3512 Ext. 7025 (leave a message, please). Trevor Caltrider wrote: First United Methodist Church, Thank you so much for being a foundation of my youth and for your gift of the Jesus is Calling book, palm cross, and scholarship. It will all be put to good use. God bless Mary Brown wants to thank those who prayed for her sister. She is out of the hospital now... Watch the kids eyes get wide as you make the Bible stories come to life! Please join the fun!!! Adults to youth who have completed 6 th grade can sign up as guides to get kids from place to place. Nina attended a workshop in Ames on June 22 nd at the Collegiate United Methodist Church just off the ISU campus. There Tim Gossett presented a day of instruction about available church software and how the copyright laws apply to the modern church. The day was packed with information for me to use to make my job easier and more professional. Many churches such as ours, are working to be better organized, more creative and keep their congregation better informed. Don t be surprised to see texting the tool of choice to keep groups or even the whole congregation informed. Wouldn t it be nice to get a text saying that church is canceled because of weather conditions...or get a brief text the day of a meeting to nudge your memory. So please share with your church office your cell phone numbers, address, and e-mail address. We hope you will help us reach for the future Thanks for sending me! Watch For Our New Handicap Accessible Doors! Thanks to the planning and coordinating of our Trustees and your donations to our balance sheet, our entrance doors on both sides of the church will soon have buttons to open the door remotely. What a welcome improvement! We would love to have parents help! Please contact Suzi for a volunteer form or sign up on the website and she will contact you!!

The Heavenly Bound Book Club is inviting you to come join the discussion and the fun we have every month. The July dates are Tuesday the 19 th, at 11:00 AM at Queen Beans or come Thursday, the 21 st at noon at Queen Beans. The Queen Beans Coffee Bar provides a private room (sometimes) and great food. It is Dutch treat. Our July book is A Broken Kind of Beautiful by Katie Ganshert Fashion is a fickle industry, a frightening fact for twenty-four year old model Ivy Clark. Ten years in and she s learned a sacred truth appearance is everything If only her tenuous future didn t rest in the hands of Davis Knight, her new photographer He treats her differently that any man ever has He, along with a cast of other characters, challenges everything Ivy as come to believe about beauty and worth. Is it possible that God sees here a woman stained and broken by the world yet wants her still? With a setting that becomes its own character, a tender romance and soul-stirring symbolism, A Broken Kind of Beautiful is a shining example of how God s grace can restore the brokenness in our lives. Lisa Jordan, award-winning author of Lakeside Reunion and Lakeside Family Books are on the front desk counter. Join us! Questions for Discussion Do you think A Broken Kind of Beautiful is a good title for this book? Given a chance to rename it, what would you call it? Ivy is not your typical Christian novel heroine. Did you like her? Why or why not? What are some of her redeemable traits? Do you think it is possible to overcome our past? Why or why not? Sara came to see the blessing in her condition. Has God ever used tragedy in your life to bring about blessings?
