D e e r f i e l d U n i t e d M e t h o d i s t C h u r c h January 2014 Newsletter A Note From the Pastor You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by others. You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before all people, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:13-16) Salt and light: that s what we are for each other. Light adds a critical way for us to see where to go, (so we are not overcome by the darkness) and we shine our inner light to share the love of God. Salt adds just the right amount of spice to enhance our lives (and our food), while making us a unique flavor in this world. on to tell me that every pastor in every church needed those people who would support them and understand what they, as pastors were going through. You have been that kind of church for your pastor! At mid-year when I am released from weekly pastoral duties, I want to be among you and will make DUMC my permanent church home. I will be the same person you know, and I ll be able to serve in the places of my gifts and passion. The timing of all the above will depend on your new pastor. I will be supportive of his/her decision regarding when I return or if a transition time period needs to happen. Regardless, I will support DUMC any way I can. At the beginning of this new year, I simply want to thank you for being beautiful light and flavorful salt for me! Your words, gifts, many kindnesses have been wonderful. I am truly blessed to continue our journey together this year, and to help transition DUMC into the next phase of ministry together. About 20 years ago, when I was in seminary a pastor friend said to me: Jackie have you ever considered that you can serve God and the church equally well by being the good church leader that you already are? He went Salt and light: let s light the way and flavor the earth with God s love together! Pastor Jackie

PAGE 3 Risk-Taking Mission News Buckeye Bonanza Thanks to everyone for making the 2013 buckeye sale a huge success! The sale, which also included Shem's pecans, brought in just under $1000 which will be a big help in buying supplies for the Community Dinners and other mission projects. There were several dozen bags left after the sale ended but they made some clients of the Kings Food Pantry very happy! Our annual dessert auction is coming up on Sunday, February 23, after the United Methodist Men s spaghetti dinner, so be thinking about what scrumptious dessert(s) you could make and get ready to start baking it to be auctioned. This year s dessert auction will benefit the Theiss family (of Mason) and their twin boys Daniel and Forrest. The boys (age 18) suffer from a rare gene mutation that causes their blood vessels to weaken, enlarge and tear. Both have undergone several operations to save their lives. Trustees News MARK YOUR CALENDARS for Saturday, February 1 at 10 a.m. and come to the Chair Reupholstery Party! Come, serve and have some fun together as we make our old Fellowship Hall chairs new. Contact Randy Cesco (3987577) if you d like to volunteer! If your birthday or anniversary was not listed, please either call the church office or send an email to deerfield@deerfieldumc.org. On February 4, 1968, exactly two months before Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, he delivered his last sermon at Atlanta s Ebenezer Baptist Church. In it, he described his preferences for his own funeral. He didn t want people to mention his Nobel Peace Prize, his other awards or where he went to school; none of that was important, he said. Instead, he wanted his eulogist to say that King tried to give his life serving others and tried to love somebody. In that sermon, King also said everybody can serve, regardless of background or educational level. The only requirements, he said, were a heart full of grace and a soul generated by love. Sometimes we re in a quandary about God s plan for our lives. For example, one young man felt led to enter the forestry service because God needs people to protect and care for his creation. The man worked in a forest for six months and was fascinated by nature s beauty. But he was dreadfully lonely. Only as he worshiped with others on Sundays did he feel at ease. When the man enrolled in a seminary, he immediately found his comfort zone. Today he s a minister and loves serving God through the church. God s will is evident when we feel fulfilled and joyous in our vocation. That s what God desires for each of us as we serve him.
