Abba s Catholic Bookstore Vespers during the Easter Season For the remaining Sundays of the Easter season, the Cathedral will hold Solemn Evening Prayer. Evening Prayer, also called Vespers, is part of the Liturgy of the Hours, also known as the Divine Office. In the Liturgy of the Hours, the Church fulfills Jesus' command to "pray always" (Luke 18:1; see also 1 Thessalonians 5:17). This liturgy begins with the singing of a hymn, follows with the chanting of Psalms, and culminates in the sung proclamation of the Canticle of Mary (the Magnificat). Through this prayer, the people of God sanctify the day by continual praise of God and prayers of intercession for the needs of the world. Solemn Evening Prayer will begin on Sundays at 4:45 pm, will feature members of the Cathedral music program, and it promises to be 20 minutes of time well spent! Knights of Columbus 2nd Sunday Breakfast On Sunday, April 12 th, breakfast will be served after all morning Masses. Enjoy pancakes, scrambled eggs, biscuits & gravy, sausage, coffee & juice! All Parishioners are invited to join the choir for this festive occasion as we cheer on the runners. First Friday This coming Friday, May 1 st, is First Friday and a day to honor the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In an appearance to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, Our Lord promised that whoever receives Holy Communion on nine consecutive First Fridays will receive specific blessings. Among these blessings are the gift of final perseverance and the promise to receive the last Sacraments before death. Plan on joining your fellow parishioners this Good Friday at Noon. Vocation Prayers Needed The Fourth Sunday of Easter, April 26 th, is World Day of Prayer for Vocations. Please join Pope Francis and your Catholic brothers and sisters around the globe in praying that many will respond to the Lord's call to serve the Church as priests, deacons, and men and women religious, especially the young people of our own parish and diocese. In particular, please pray for the success of our diocese's two summer vocation awareness events, Quo Vadis Days for young men and Vocare for young women. For more information about either event or vocations in general in our diocese, please visit our new website: www.vocationsspokane.org
Scriptural Reflection April 26, 2015 Fourth Sunday of Easter Acts 4: 8-12; Ps 118: 1, 8-9, 21-23, 26, 28-29; 1 Jn 3: 1-2; Jn 10: 11-18 Traditionally, the Fourth Sunday of Easter (today) is also called Good Shepherd Sunday. Christ tells us in today s Gospel from John, I am the good shepherd, and I know mine and mine know me. The image of Christ as the shepherd is one of the oldest in the Church. Even in the Catacombs there is an ancient drawing of Christ carrying a sheep on his shoulders. Sometimes it is difficult for us to view ourselves as sheep. There is something passive and reliant in that image which may bother our sense of independence. However, if we are honest with ourselves, we know that we need the Lord s help and guidance. An essential part of living a stewardship way of life is placing our lives in the hands of our Good Shepherd nonetheless. Throughout this Easter Season we celebrate that one mystery that Christ gave His life for us on the Cross. If we accept the fact that He is our Savior and that He is our Shepherd, we are better able to serve as shepherds to one another. Stewardship is a life of giving self, a life of self-giving. We must constantly work to live up to the Lord s expectations of us, but we also must always know that He is our shepherd, our Good Shepherd, and He is always there for us. Guatemala Mission Celebration All are invited to the Third Annual Guatemala Mission Celebration on Monday, May 18 th from 5:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Featured guest speakers will be Fr. David Baronti and Sr. Janet Druffel. Guatemala Commission members will provide updates of mission information with pictures. Hors d oeuvres and beverages (water, coffee) are free with wine available for purchase. All are welcome and invited! There is no charge for this event held at Barrister Winery, 1213 W. Railroad Ave. 6 Bloomsday Blessing At the 4:00 p.m. Saturday Vigil Mass on May 2nd Father Connall will sprinkle Holy Water on the feet of all those participating in Bloomsday. Feel free to wear your running shoes and gear for this special blessing.
