Baby Shower for Dave & Liz Ronan Saturday, October 14 2 pm at Green Gables 41225 Road 112 Dinuba, CA 93618 Talk to Pat Oxford or Maggie Hanson if you need more details. Even if you are not doing your own personal shoebox for Operation Christmas Child, you can do this! Just write a letter, add a photo or drawing if you wish, and we ll add it to one of the boxes we pack here at church. We had many of our VBS kids fill out some form letters to go in some of the shoeboxes. This is a sweet personal touch that will cost you only a bit of time. We can do this!! People hate guilt trips. If you want to get someone to volunteer, guilt trips can work... once. But using guilt as your only form of motivation is not a good plan. Especially today. Today, if you imply that someone is doing something unscriptural or sinful, you are considered a hateful, hurtful, judgmental person. If you imply that a Christian should go to church regularly with their children and participate fully to show a faithful and beneficial example you are intellectually dismissed as a legalistic hypocrite. Yes, people hate guilt trips. But why? Two basic reasons. One, the guilt you are feeling is worldly guilt, guilt used to manipulate you, to attempt to control you, to get you to change your ways, because unless you do, you are a bad person. Two, the guilt you feel is godly guilt, guilt used to manipulate you, to attempt to control you, to get you to change your ways, because unless you do, you are not godly. Guilt from God is guilt that should be addressed. John 9: 39-41 Jesus said, For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind. Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, What? Are we blind too? Jesus said, If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains. Guilt that is God given, is a wonderful gift. It can be suppressed, or even ignored. But the reality? For something to be ignored, it had to first be encountered. But no one can honestly say they have never encountered God. God makes His voice heard, His wonders seen, His presence known, and His desires conveyed. All can be ignored, we have Free Will. Proverbs 14:9 Fools make fun of guilt, but the godly acknowledge it and seek reconciliation. All sin and fall short of the glory of God. Therefore, all are also given the free gift of godly guilt. The hope is that patience, kindness, knowledge of sin, and knowledge of love, forgiveness, mercy, and grace will bring all to repentance. Sadly, Free Will is a two-edged sword. We are able to choose to accept the love of God, to love God in return, and repent. However, we are also able to follow our heart and choose to reject God and continue on as a prodigal. God doesn t desire for anyone to perish, He wants everyone to come to repentance. God loves all, Jesus died for all, and the Good News, The Gospel, Eternal Salvation is offered to all. Physical Death is not where the story ends as far as God is concerned. Jesus died for you because He didn t want life in heaven without you. Death is not the plan, life is! 2 Corinthians 7: 10 Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. Worldly sorrow brings death. I know people, Christian people, who are
S E P T E M B E R 2 0 1 7 spiritually paralyzed by their past sins. But the guilt they feel is worldly sorrow, not godly guilt. Romans 8:1-2 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. Our confessed sin is forgiven sin, our forgiven sin is erased, taken away, cast into the see of forgetfulness and remembered no more... by God. We, however, dredge it up time and time again. We allow friends to cripple us with its soul killing power. We listen to the devil when he tempts us to see ourselves as unloved and unwanted. We aren t condemned by our past sins, but we can be condemned by giving them more power than God, and allowing them to keep us from being in Christ Jesus. If we are in Christ Jesus there is no condemnation. But if we are still wallowing in our past sins, we are not in Christ Jesus we are in our past sins! Don t let guilt keep you captive, let it call you to repentance so you can be truly free! Being set free means you are FREE! The spiritually guilty are sentenced to death. But Jesus, our advocate, if accepted, takes the penalty for our sin, and sets us free. John 8: 31-36 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. They answered him, We are Abraham s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free? Jesus replied, Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. God does not want us to remain guilt ridden, only for us to have guilt that brings. us to our knees for repentance. Freedom from sin is the final goal of God s love. Guilt that lasts beyond forgiveness is not of God, it actually speaks to a lack in faith, a failure to believe God truly forgives as He says He does. Let godly guilt get the best of you. Let it bring you to repentance and freedom from sin! See ya Sunday!
