Rev. Mike Winters Pastor Ben Harding Music Director Dr. Ray Jones, Jr. Pastor Emeritus WISE BAPTIST NEWS A PUBLICATION FOR MEMBERS AND FRIENDS OF WISE BAPTIST CHURCH February 19, 2019 A place for faith and fellowship with family and friends. Dear Church Family and Friends, What factors determine who survives difficult circumstances? Hampton Sides tells the story of American survivors of a POW camp in the Philippines in World War II. Some prisoners survived for two years until their heroic rescue on January 28, 1945. Sides describes some POW s who got a certain look, a kind of blank stare. Other prisoners knew what that meant. It was a sign that they had given up. Often, they died in a day. Ironically, other prisoners, who were physically weaker, survived. Charles Swindoll says that the best way to look at life is that it is 10% circumstances and 90% how we respond to those circumstances. Often, we behave as if life were 90% circumstances and 10% how we respond. Some of the POW s who gave up were in the same situation as those who survived. But they gave up. They lost hope. They stopped trying. They thought the circumstances were the 90%. Other POW s, who were in the same situation, behaved as if the circumstances were the 10% and their response was the 90%. It was a life and death difference! Where can we apply the 90% /10% concept? Paul says in Philippians 4:6-7 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. My attitude and response make a great difference!
