LITTLETON BAPTIST NEWS A Cooperative Baptist Fellowship Congregation Our mission is to make Christ known, by providing spiritual nourishment, ministering to physical needs, and sharing the Gospel. Rev. Tom Bodkin, Pastor in the Interim Website: www.littletonbaptistchurch.org email: littletonbaptistchurch@embarqmail.com October 2018 (252) 586-5330 Vol. 42 No. 10 THOUGHTS ALONG THE WAY TRAGEDY STRIKES CLOSE TO HOME This column is being written on September 19. Florence visited our shores just one week ago. Yes, it is true that hurricanes are no stranger to North Carolina. It seems that geography has put us in a vulnerable position for hurricanes to strike our shores. This most recent visit from Florence has been described by many as the worst I have ever seen. Certainly, its magnitude would rank it at the very top of the list. As may be true with some of you, some of the hardest hit locations have a special place very close to my heart. Lumberton is the location of the last home of my grandparents, and the city where my grandfather assisted in establishing a church. New Bern was the last home of my mother before she had to be taken to a nursing home following a stroke. Betty was born in Fayetteville and grew up in Kinston. Both have been hard hit. Miraculously, Raleigh has been spared any major damage. WRAL S, David Crabtree, describes Raleigh, saying that it is as though we were living under a protective bubble. It does seem that way, but that does not prevent us from having deep compassion for the thousands who live in the impacted areas. Amazing response is coming from countless people across this great country. They have come up with unique ways to help. It was reported on tonight s news that a group of private plane owners had been organized to fly food and supplies to people stranded by flooded roads. There are so many of these in Eastern North Carolina. In our own church, we are receiving an offering for NC Baptist Men/Baptists on Mission. There are those volunteers in our church who have been trained in Disaster Relief and have gone, and will go to help. One thing we can all do is pray for the recovery efforts and the people involved. We know from past experience that recovery is a long, painful and expensive process. At this writing, our Search Committee is to present Rev. David Little to our congregation. When you receive this, you will have heard him preach and voted on his coming as pastor. Whatever the result, Littleton Baptist Church and Rev. Little are in our prayers. Our eternal gratitude to the diligent Search Committee. Your friend and Pastor in the Interim, Tom

Our Christian sympathy is extended to: Mike & Ann Currin and family in the death of his mother, Josephine Currin My daddy loved for me to play the piano. He would love to sing while I played and would sometime get out his guitar and play along. He loved hearing Joanne Castle play the piano on the Lawrence Welk show. Sometime he would ask me to play a song he had heard on the show. I would, but believe you me, I didn't sound like Joanne Castle! I would remind him that I wasn't born with that ability...i had to have 10 years of piano lessons! October 25th is the 4 year anniversary of Daddy's passing. I am going to attempt to play something a little different from what I usually play for a piano special on October 14th. Please ignore all the wrong notes you will hear! This is in memory of Daddy. I hope this puts a smile on his face... and yours! Laura Our church will once again be sending Christmas Cards to our military personnel who will be away from home during the Christmas Holidays. These cards from our church family will cheer them in their distant service. We are also asking you to provide names, addresses, rank, relationship to you (i.e family, friend, neighbor etc.). (Note: If you have family or friends serving in missions somewhere, we will also extend this request for names to include them as well.) Please give the information to Sid Shearin or the church office. The cards will be in the vestibule for you to sign on November 25, December 2 & 9. Sid wants to remind everyone you are not allowed to sign for your spouse or children. Everyone needs to sign individually. The Mission Committee will meet on Thursday, October 18, at 7:00 P.M. in the church annex. Members of the committee are: Melinda Harris, Clyde Johnston, Brenda Hudson, Mike Crawley, Lee Myrick, Ann Currin and Mike Currin. Our Deacons will meet at 7:00 P.M. on Sunday, October 7, in the Annex Conference Room. Special thanks to Mike Crawley and Sid Shearin who completed their terms of service in September. Our next Quarterly Business Meeting is Wednesday, October 10, at 7:30 P.M. These quarterly meetings are vital to the church and her ministry as we report, discuss, plan and consider the ongoing needs that will strengthen us as the people of God. You are encouraged to be present and to always be prayerful about our church s ministries!

MAINTENANCE COMMITTEE With the changing of the season from Summer to Fall, we also welcome the beginning of a new Church year with regards to committees and responsibilities. Thanks to your prayers, gifts and support, Baptists on Mission/NC Baptist Men are serving Hurricane Florence victims all across eastern North Carolina. They have been working hard helping clear debris, removing fallen trees & so much more. Continue praying for the storm victims and relief volunteers. The impact of Hurricane Florence will be felt for a long time. If you would like to give a special offering to assist NC Baptist Men/Baptists on Mission with Hurricane Florence flood relief there are special envelopes in the vestibule & fellowship hall for use. You can also mail a donation to: NCBM, PO Box 1107, Cary, NC 27512. Designate on your check Hurricane Florence or Disaster Relief. Your support will go 100% to these efforts so carefully consider your sacrificial gift to this special need. Visit the website to view more pictures or extra information: www.baptistsonmission.org. Thank you to all that worked so hard to make our Annual Church Picnic a huge success! A wonderful time was had by all! The food was great, desserts were extra good and the Christian fellowship was awesome! You can view more pictures on our website or Facebook page.
