BHAKTI NEWSLETTER (VII EDITION) (NOVEMBER 2014) FROM CMD S DESK. Love thy job as thy love themselves Today, if a man looks confident, we can be rest assured that his confidence is primarily derived from his job. If a man feels like a king, that feeling is derived from his job. It is a fact that we are over dependent on one s job, work, position, power etc. Let us assume a hypothetical situation wherein our job is taken away one fine day and we are unable to get another job immediately. What would be the condition of that person? Barring very few persons, the rest of us would find it so difficult to handle this phase. If there is no job, many would lose their peace, happiness, family ties, friendship. Being without a job is a huge ego shattering experience and a person finds it very difficult to handle that phase. And everything goes for a toss in this period. There are two aspects which we need to understand in this situation. First, let us be aware that our confidence is derived from our jobs or from our position. Let us also be conscious that without the jobs or positions, we ll never have this level of confidence. So, let us be grateful to our job and work. It is a fact that without a job, we would struggle. Certainly, work has to become worship. Let us stop criticizing the organization, which is paying the salary. Even if there are limitations in the organization, we need to be clear that the salary provided by them is the source of our happiness, success, peace, wealth etc. We must promise to our self that not a single day must pass without feeling grateful for the work we have. Secondly, is it worth to be over reliant on jobs? When there is so much in life, why we have to solely make our job as the source of our happiness and confidence? This is because one of the important aspects is money. How to manage money without a job? I have seen a person who used to save half of his income and saved the remaining half. He used to believe that his salary is only Rs. 15000 when actually his salary was Rs. 30000. He lived 20 years with this principle. He then resigned his job to pursue his dream of becoming an entrepreneur. He is receiving Rs. 75000 per month as return on investment from all the savings he did in the past 20 years. Since he was financially self reliant, he was able to focus on other ventures without any desperation.
Dear friends, when money is so important for life, it is a sheer prudence to save sufficient money when the going is good so that we can live the rest of the life without overdependence on salary. Steve Job had said I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today? And whenever the answer has been No for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. As Confucius has said, Choose a job which you will love and you will never have to work in your life. Perception of Time Time begins when we get up and ends when we go to sleep, only to begin again the next morning. But, it ends too fast to our liking. In spite of all the time management techniques, this feeling of lack of time does not go away. Are we delegating less or have we taken on too many things to do. The day s leftovers are then carried over to the day after. Life is one long never ending day. Completion never seems to arrive. Time and identity are closely related. Those who have only one identity and if that identity is their work, then, for the rest of their lives, they will be inseparable from work. They will also keep complaining that they have too much work. But without work, they will not be able to sustain their identity.
If a busy person is having a hobby like playing sitar and gives public concerts where is appreciated by all. Somehow, life will find a way to distribute time to both identities. He will find time to practice his sitar and give concerts. He will also find time for his work. So, our second identity can be anything we want it to be. It is up to us to create it. Those who are spiritually minded will find time to pursue their spiritual interests. Those who are interested in doing something for society will find time for helping others. We will not be able to overcome the sense of incompleteness because there will always be unfinished tasks on hand. To do lists are never empty. If they are, we will find something to fill it with. We will just have to acknowledge the existence of incompleteness and make peace with it and allow it to be there. Stop verbalizing that you don t have time. It will only focus attention on the shortage and make it worse. Constantly looking at the watch and reminding ourselves of time is a sure way to feel its scarcity. Keep busy but drop the need to have the busy bee identity to validate the self. Also spend some time not being busy. Cultivate identities and interests so that time is distributed. We can experience a sense of completeness only by looking back in time at all the things that we have accomplished and completed. We can only be complete with the past, not with the present. So, don t sacrifice your present for the future because when the future becomes the present, it will meet with the same fate. Time must not hang over our heads like the sword of Damocles.
