St Mary of the Cross MacKillop Last week, I accompanied students, Mrs Byrne and Mrs Zivic to the annual Diocesan Mission Mass at St Patricks Cathedral, Parramatta. Fr Chris DeSouza led the congregation. He reminded us that, to be a missionary, one does not need to travel to faraway places. We, as Baptised Catholic, have the obligation to evangelise and be missionary where ever we are. At OLA School, I witness this all the time - among the staff members; their generosity of self and time to give to the students and each other - the parents; so many times, without hesitation or question, you come to the aid of others in need. - the students; in the little (and big) things they do for each other. Invariably, children learn from what is modelled to them from around. Remember to bring this missionary practice into our own homes and families. True love, the Jesus kind, asks for nothing in return. Kinder Orientation This coming Thursday, we welcome the students of 2018 Kindergarten and their parents. Many of you will remember how daunting and hectic this can be. As in the past, I thank you ahead of time for dropping your children early and exiting the car park as soon as possible please. Also, if you see someone looking bewildered, please offer to help them. A comment I consistently receive from a range of visitors to OLA is how warm and welcoming the place feels. This is thanks to all members in our community. I thank the P&F who will be providing morning tea. If you can help, that would be most appreciated. Opening and Blessing Next Friday is the official Opening and Blessing of the last of our school buildings. There will be limited parking throughout the day as reserved parking will be allocated for special guests. For those not attending and would like to view the proceedings, we hope to live stream on OLA You Tube station. The details will be provided on Friday morning. Gospel Reflection 22nd October, 2017 (Mt 22:15-21) A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew Give to Caesar the things that belong to Caesar and to God the things that are God s. The Pharisees went away to work out between them how to trap Jesus in what he said. And they sent their disciples to him, together with the Herodians, to say, Master, we know that you are an honest man and teach the way of God in an honest way, and that you are not afraid of anyone, because a man s rank means nothing to you. Tell us your opinion, then. Is it permissible to pay taxes to Caesar or not? But Jesus was aware of their malice and replied, You hypocrites! Why do you set this trap for me? Let me see the money you pay the tax with. They handed him a denarius, and he said, Whose head is this? Whose name? Caesar s they replied. He then said to them, Very well, give back to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God. Gospel Reflection The Pharisees and the Herodians try to trip Jesus up, but he won t fall for their setup. They ask him to choose between the worldly and the holy, between the political and the religious. Jesus simply says that we need to give to each what is due to each. Do you ever experience a conflict between what your faith says and what your country says? If something is legal, is it always moral? And if something is moral, is it always legal? What is an example of such a conflict? Do you ever experience a conflict between what your civil community says and what your faith community says? If something is an acceptable practice in your school or in your circle of friends, does that mean it s always right to do? And is the right thing always acceptable in your social situation? What is an example of such a conflict? Some people try to live entirely in one arena, and they are totally against the other. Do you know anyone who completely rejects all religion and talk of God and only clings to the physical, modern world? What is that attitude like? Do you know anyone who completely rejects all earthly things and clings only to the religious and spiritual? What is that attitude like? Do you know anyone who lives a good balance of both the spiritual and the earthly? What is that attitude like? (Liturgyhelp.com, 16-10-2017. Mission Mass On the 13/10/17 few students including myself went to Parramatta to show other schools in the Parramatta diocese what we have done for our mission unit. All the schools and ministers gathered in the St Patrick's church and celebrated mission with a Mass. There were many different programs and projects supporting mission but the people who make it happen are the reason why our world is changing. I am very thankful that I got to experience all of the great things that our schools do for mission. Based on mission we saw many different things that schools did. Supporting the people on the street, children not being able to go to school and much more. What I loved about it was the way I saw how compassionate everyone was to talk about it and the way they looked at the things we have done, I can see the world that we live in change before my eyes. I am so grateful that I got to experience this, changing lives. Trinity Johnston and Sophia Tapley Mindfulness at OLA Mindfulness helps us to cultivate RESPECT for others. The diagram below demonstrates the three sides of the mindfulness triangle. OLA students have been progressively exploring, through mindfulness activities and exercises, focusing attention and calming the body and mind. We are beginning to explore how being mindful develops a proactive attitude and how our focus of attention can be directed towards kindness to others in the classroom and on the playground. The three sides of the mindfulness triangle overlap and support each other.
