ST. BERNARD PARISH PAGE 2 Ah, the Second Week of Lent! Last week I offered some Lenten pointers: Trust that God is behind whatever you are tackling for Lent that is of substance. Jesus was driven by the Spirit into the Desert! Jesus I Trust in you! can be our daily recommitment. Be Bold! and go into the desert areas of your life that are avoided or that you are afraid of. Be Patient with yourself and with God remembering that Jesus was in the Desert for 40 Days. Don t Not Be Naïve about temptations, remember that Jesus himself was tempted by Satan while praying and fasting. Be Honest and name the beasts that surround you and threaten your Lent. Be Weak and call on God s help often, Jesus himself was ministered to by angels while in the desert. When I am weak, then I am strong! writes Saint Paul. And remember that even if every day ends in failure in your eyes, it was a success in God s because you tried to spend the day with him. Onward! Making Lent a different and holy time takes some creativity and juggling of life. Here are 10 things you could do that make space for God s voice. Maybe choose one or two a week. Fr. Mark Vander Steeg 10 Things to do in and after Lent that Make a Space for God s Voice Mass Intentions The saving graces of the Mass are for: Monday, February 26 8:45 am Word/Communion Service Tuesday, February 27 8:45 am Word/Communion Service 2:30 pm Bornemann Nursing Home Mass Wednesday, February 28 8:45 am the soul of Bonnie Tesch Thursday, March 1 8:45am Mari Holzer Friday, March 2 8:45 pm the soul of Richard Jilot 12:10 pm Stations of the Cross 7:00 pm Stations of the Cross Saturday, March 3 2:30 pm Confessions 4:00 pm the people of St. Bernard Parish Sunday, March 4 8:00 am the soul of Timothy Hughes 10:00 am the soul of Michael Borley 5:30 pm Confessions 6:30 pm the soul of Joe Froelich 1. Visit a cemetery or family cemetery plot. While there, pray for the person or family member that has passed on to God. Ponder your own mortality and that one day you will leave this life to be with God. What healings and love do you hope for? Ponder your resurrection. What in life could change now because of this truth? 2. Say a Hail Mary before your drive each day/ or go out for the day. Asking Mary and the Saints to pray for you and to help you avoid road rage or frustration. Ask for pardon from God when you do fall into these sins or weaknesses. 3. Make the Sign of the Cross when you pass a Catholic Church acknowledging the presence of God in the Tabernacle within that Church. Ask for pardon for the times when you were careless or indifferent to his presence. Ask him to renew the gift of piety and fear of the Lord within your heart. 4. Pray an Our Father when you pass a cemetery. Pray for the departed whose bodies lie there. Ask these souls on the way to the Promised Land to pray for you. Ask for God s help to keep your own focus just beyond the Horizon of this earthly Life. 5. Make a Holy Hour or Holy Half-Hour in any Catholic church, chapel or shrine where the Tabernacle is present. Acknowledge him as there and take some extended time silently with him or praying. 6. Pray a decade of the Rosary specifically for those you have hurt in the past. (1 Our Father, 10 Hail Mary s, 1 Glory Be). Ask God to bless, heal and help them. This could be done every Friday or once a week. 7. Honestly go to Confession, here or elsewhere. Take a guide from our Narthex or go online to find one. Prepare, be honest, be brief, be open. Let God near in this way this Lent. 8. Make a visit to the Shrine of Lady of Good Help in Champion, Wisconsin. It is 20 minutes from the Parish. Read the story. Pray in the main upstairs church with Jesus. Visit the Crypt below where the apparition took place and entrust your prayers to Mary s prayers too. Maybe visit the seer Adele s grave outside and view the site of the miracle of the Great Fire. 9. Do an act of Justice. Donate to (or help out at) our food pantry. Donate to St. John s Homeless Shelter. Participate in the 40 Days for Life Campaign on Oneida Street for 30 minutes outside Planned Parenthood, witnessing to the dignity of Human Life. Be Bold. Choose. 10. Visit the Cathedral. It is open a ton. See the renovation of the paintings. Visit the museum if it is open. While there, pray for the local church, the bishop, and an increase in happy vocations to priesthood, consecrated life and marriage. Pray for faithful, generous, single persons to be powerful witnesses and disciples of Christ. Pray for a new Pentecost of the Holy Spirit to be poured out on all the faithful here in our Diocese.

FEBRUARY 24 & 25, 2018 PAGE 3 2nd Sunday in Lent Here I am! he answered. -GENESIS 22:11 It is easy to say, Here I am Lord, when we are kneeling in church. But how easy is it to say Here I am, Lord, when a neighbor needs our help, when we are invited to join a parish ministry, or when we are asked to provide financial support? Often times we are called when it s not convenient for us. Discipleship is not always easy, most of the time it will make us uncomfortable and vulnerable.
