C orpus Christi Catholic Community part of the Catholic Church of Northeast Kansas Stewardship 2019 A Disciple s Response Parish Mission Statement As a growing community of disciples we are to bear witness to the love and compassion of Jesus Christ by our work, worship and hospitality. As a community of faith we are first and foremost nurtured by the Eucharist, so as to become the Body of Christ Corpus Christi. 6001 Bob Billings Parkway Lawrence, Kansas 66049-5200 785-843-6286 www.cccparish.org

C orpus Christi Catholic Community part of the Catholic Church of Northeast Kansas To the Members of the Corpus Christi Community, It is time again for our annual stewardship drive. Stewardship 2019: A Disciple s Response begins each fall in our community and we will once again be asked to look at the gifts that God gives to us and our response to those gifts in the areas of Prayer, Time & Talent, and Sharing (Treasure). While stewardship is commonly used as a camouflaged appeal for funds for church and religious purposes, the term denotes a more comprehensive view of the Christian life affecting time, work, leisure, talents, money, the state of one s soul and care for the environment. The Greek word for steward (oikonomos, from which we get our word economy) means one who manages a household. Years ago persons called stewards, rather than huge financial institutions, were employed to manage the financial affairs and households of wealthy people. Their management included not only money but everything that makes a household thrive, not unlike the vocation of homemaking but on a large scale. Stewardship is a term theologically related to service or ministry (diakonia). If service denotes the motivation for ministry, undertaking God s interests for the pleasure of God, stewardship suggests the purpose of ministry: to manage God s world in harmony with the owner s mind. These two words, service and stewardship, taken together constitute the ministry of the laity and are roughly equivalent to the much popularized term servant leadership. Stewardship integrates most facets of everyday life. This is taken from a retreat that I gave several years ago on Stewardship. I repeat it here as a way for us to begin to better realize that stewardship is a spirituality, a way of life that we must embrace as followers of Christ. While we once a year look closely at our response and pledge our first fruits of prayer, time/talent and sharing to God, responding as a disciple to Christ s call to stewardship means embracing the constant change of the Holy Spirit to see how we share what we have with God s family. In this brochure you will see the many opportunities that you have to share your prayer, time/talent and your treasure here in the Corpus Christi Community. Please take some prayerful time to consider what God is calling you to in the many prayer offerings and ministries offered here in your community. Also look carefully at what you are currently giving to the church and consider your sacrificial gift of 5% of your gross income to Corpus Christi, 1% to the Archdiocese through the Archbishop s Call to Share and 4% to other deserving charities of your choice. This 4% is where gifts to capital campaigns come from, as well as annual giving campaigns from your favorite alma mater or institution. Please know that your prayerful attention is being called for by Stewardship 2019. May God continue to bless you and yours during this year of grace. Sincerely in Christ, Rev. Michael H. Mulvany Fr. Mick Pastor 2

Introduction A s a community, Corpus Christi Parish is answering the call of a stewardship parish. As individuals we listen and sometimes accept the invitation to share our time, talent and treasure. Corpus Christi invites and encourages each member of our community to actively join us as we continue the call to be a Stewardship Parish. What is stewardship, and what does that mean to us in our daily lives? True stewardship is not just putting extra money in an envelope, or serving on a parish committee or in a parish ministry. It is much deeper than that. A good steward understands humbly that all they are and all they possess is a gift. Good stewards realize that they cannot equal God s generosity. The more they give the more God gives in return. True stewardship comes from within and as such is a way of life which includes caring for ourselves physically, emotionally and spiritually. As God s children and as an outpouring of this respect for ourselves, stewardship calls us to care for each other: our families, friends and those in our community. Stewardship is a challenge and challenge generally requires change or conversion. We know that change can be difficult but it is important to realize that conversion is a process, not an event. Individuals embark on their own lifelong stewardship journey learning about their gifts and sharing their gifts with others. Becoming a true steward of our Lord requires prayer, meditation, trust and time. It calls us to reassess our priorities and to make adjustments in the importance we place on things. It affects every aspect of our family life, work life and spiritual life. The benefits of a stewardship lifestyle are many. Perhaps the greatest benefit is knowing we have added value to another s life through our own actions. Small gestures take on great meaning and give great reward when applied with love in the spirit of Jesus Christ. Stewardship is more than just managing a portfolio of gifts. Being a disciple is not just something else to do, alongside many other things suitable for Christians; it is a total way of life and requires continual conversion. A good steward receives God s gifts gratefully, cultivates them responsibly, shares them lovingly with justice with others, and returns them with increase to the Lord. Join us on the journey.. As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God s varied grace. 1:Peter 4:10 3

A good steward receives God s gifts gratefully, cultivates them responsibly, shares them lovingly in justice with others, and returns them with increase to the Lord. Sharing our Treasure Oftentimes we feel that it is okay for us to be challenged about the time that we should be spending offering ourselves in the service of others. However, the same is not always true when someone asks us to look at our giving. Being a responsible steward means taking the time at least once a year to look at what first fruits we are offering back to God in our prayer, our time and talent and in sharing our treasure. We are challenged to give a sacrificial gift of 5% of our gross income to our worshipping community, 1% to the Archbishop s Call to Share and 4% for other charitable and worthwhile causes. This brings our sacrificial giving to the 10% tithing that comes to us from scripture. The guides that follow can help in identifying where your current giving is in relation to your income level. Find yourself on the guide and do your best to just take ONE STEP this year. Challenge yourself to offer 1/2% more than last year. By moving just 1/2% each year it encourages movement to the 5% sacrificial giving level to which we are called. Following the giving guides you will find the latest financial summary of the parish, including the figures reported to the Archdiocese for the last fiscal year (2017-2018) and the current budget for this fiscal year (2018-2019). In addition we are also reporting the gifts that this community has offered in its mission work here and around the world. Corpus Christi Financial Summary The summary above represents the financial report that was sent to the Archdiocese at the end of fiscal year 2017-2018, as well as the budget that began on July 1, 2018 for the current fiscal year. This financial information is made available to you as a sign of the parish's stewardship of your gifts of TREASURE, however, a spirituality of stewardship is one that does not make a pledge of treasure because of a particular financial need, rather, the pledge is made in response to God's gift for all that we have, and all that we are. Thank you for your response to His call.

Religious Education Corpus Christi Catholic School Apostolates (...the organized work of the laity that is performed under the direction or mandate of a bishop in the fields of dogma, morals, liturgy, education, and charity.) The work of the Church is always in response to the call to discipleship and the mandate left to us by Christ to go out and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit. It is because of this mandate that we reach out to missions around the world, take care of the poor and the homeless, watch over the elderly and the young children. This mandate calls us to heal and teach, listen and lead, forgive and hope. This call leads us in our mission as a Church and guides us to the apostolates that we take on as a community. Because not all of us can do all things, we also support the work of the archdiocesan church through the Archbishop s Call to Share. The goal assigned to us this year is $112,550. This represents Corpus Christi s portion of the archdiocesan s apostolate. Of the many works that we do here in our own community, the Religious Education program and the parish Catholic School represent some of our most important work in handing on the faith to our young people. The following is a breakdown of how we support this apostolate of education. The 2018-2019 per pupil cost to educate a student in the parish school. $6,000.00 Of this total, 60% of the per pupil cost is covered through the stewardship share of our school parents (including enrollment & book fees). $3,600.00 30% of this cost is covered by a subsidy from the parish as an apostolate. $1,800.00 3rd source funding, and development work must raise 10% of these funds through outside sources. $600.00 The 2018-2019 per pupil cost for education in the Religious Education Program. $420.00 Each family is also asked to pledge their stewardship share each year. The subsidy from the parish as an apostolate. $126.00 The fees that are assessed to each family for Each student. $125.00 Parish Stewardship 2017-2018 (parish stewardship of share for missions and apostolates) Pastoral Center $5,673.47 World Mission Sunday $202.00 Youth Formation within the Archdiocese $26,658.65 Campaign for Human Dev. $764.00 Catholic Charities Christmas Collection $8,510.21 Church in Latin America $509.00 Lawrence Community Shelter $750.00 Church in Central/Eastern $828.00 Pledged to Call to Share $101,225.00 Black/Native American Missions $932.00 Assistance to the Needy (Gift From The Heart) $42,802.13 Catholic Communications $1,318.00 Habitat for Humanity of Lawrence $3,307.31 Holy Father Collection $1.101.00 LINK $250.00 Mission Work of the Church $916.00 Catholic University $998.06 Catholic Home Missions $520.00 Catholic Relief Services-Disaster Relief $21,659.25 Catholic Relief Services-Rice Bowl $929.30 Offering for Priesthood Past/Present/Future $31,922.74 Retirement Fund for Religious $1,379.00 Cathedratic (for the work of the Archdiocese) $66,646.63 Total $319,801.75 9

Stewardship Treasure Worksheet Use the forms below to begin the process of sharing your treasure through Stewardship 2019. You will be receiving a letter in the mail telling you what your weekly gift to your parish community is at this time. Use that number to see where your percentage of your gross income currently stands as your stewardship gift. Then pray as a family about increasing your stewardship gift by at least 1/2% this stewardship year. Also, please seriously consider automatic stewardship. Through EFT or a credit card, each month the parish will receive your stewardship gift, even if you are away for vacation, family activities or work. This will allow the parish to plan on a steady income to meet our fiscal responsibilities. Thank you for answering your call to discipleship through Stewardship 2019.
